Why I can't just blame James Gunn for killing boomer is that even in such short amount of time James and the actor Jay Courtney treated boomer better than ever with maximum love towards the character. Such as the fact he's the one who seems to be caring about Blackguard moving forward, even preparing for some backup. And yes, he's the only one who had and actual kill count of two. He's dead, but much more charms he had than the Ayer version (which I also love, but you know)

The first Suicide Squad didn't even use his boomerangs much at all. The only time he gets any significant kills with them is in the 15 seconds before he dies in the sequel.

His unicorn obesession never had pay off. Nothing did. He has thrown one useful Boomerang in movie one. A Camerang. He left the team (Best character moment in the movie) and it was never explained why he would come back. No suprise, nor corny line like "Boomerang always comes back", no reason like getting attacked by those Enchantress goons while trying to escape the city. And in the second movie, he died for shock value. They did Jay Courtney dirty because this was actually a role he gave a performance. And it was fun.
