I used to sing these shanties when I was in the Navy for four years before joining the Army. They really do make work go better and most people love them to break up the monotony. One day the chief heard me and I said I would stop, he said, "Dont you dare sailor, thats the seafaring spirit we need, work gets done on time with you singing." I can't carry a tune in a suitcase but I love to sing. I just discovered this channel this morn. Instant like and Sub.

This has the same pace as we used to march on long humps (Marine Corps slang for marching). If we had Colm sing our cadence we could have marched across an entire continent
@BaronNate2 жыл бұрын
@@tazdianbrewhaha1402 I can see that pace for sure. I served in the Navy and then the Army, this would have been really good for a march, Colm would kill it calling cadence.

I’m retired US Navy (1999-2019) and I have a deep love for sea shanties. I absolutely love being at sea. I came across this song today at work and can’t stop listening to it. This is amazing. Makes me wanna head to some coastal town in Maine or Halifax (one of my favorite places ever) and drink at a bar on the waterfront and sing songs of the sea with Sailors. I love this. As we say in the US Navy when someone has done something exceptional, “BRAVO ZULU!”

While its exact origins are a bit murky, "Bully in the Alley" is most likely a sea shanty born of the Caribbean trade routes. The song tells the lighthearted tale of a sailor who might have imbibed a bit too much while on land, finding himself "bully" (an archaic term for drunk) in an alley. His shipmates, not yet ready to turn in, continue their revelry. The song's catchy tune and simple verses made it a popular choice for sailors during short hauls or other quick bursts of work that needed a rhythmic accompaniment. Secondary Source: Hugill, Stan. Shanties From the Seven Seas. Mystic Seaport Museum: Mystic, CT: 1994.

For those interested, "Bully" in this context means drunk. Specifically, absolutely sodding legless, jober as a sudge, munted, too much blood in one's alcohol system, etc. "Shinbone alley" was a common name for alleyways near the waterfront in seaside towns and cities, and there's even a few places where the name survives to this day, unlike other, less PC names such as Gropec*nt road. The word "spliced" In "Sally is a girl that I spliced nearly" means married, so the song is about a sailor who proposed to Sally, but all she did was 'dilly and dally', so he went off to take up some nautical profession (I've heard both piracy and whaling used, as the two had the potential to be quite lucrative) in order to improve his prospects and thus his hopes of winning Sally's hand when he returns. And in the mean time, he's getting calling for help from Bob because he's so shitfaced he probably can't even stand.
