DC's latest, Black Adam, has a lot going for it! But it just has one too many problems for me to truly be into it. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson isn't actually one of them, though.

Basically, to do Black Adam justice, you really need a series, not a movie. A movie has to appeal to the widest possible audience, so it has to be super-safe. A guy declaring himself to not be a hero while only actually killing incredibly evil people is as edgy as a blockbuster can really get. Black Adam is basically Super-Dexter, but Dexter could never be a blockbuster movie character, even if you gave him powers.

They're likely keeping that plotpoint for Shazam 3. I can see Black Adam being defeated because he's able to turn Billy back into a kid, realizing Billy is just like his kid (if not a little modern), and hesitating because he sees himself as harming his son. In this moment of hesitation, Billy yells "shazam!" turning him back into Shazam and Adam into En'Sabanur, Billy/Shazam then using this opportunity to incapacitate him.

I remember regretting having gone to see Jumanji and felt sour for the first 10 minutes but the second he appeared I was entranced. His signature goofy smile is like a warm cup of hot chocolate. Funny, he doesn't carry Jumanji at all for me. The real star is Jack Black as Bethany. I do think though, that it's still one of the Rock's better roles. Although mostly because of the opposite of your reason, I think he's fun in a role where he plays a nerdy kid in a brawny body, it's fun to see him contradict his physical traits like that and it's an acting job he can manage. And since you gloss over it pretty quickly, I'd take the time to argue that the Skeleton Army is actually a much bigger problem then it appears. The reason being, that so much of the movie's running time has the Crown of Sabbac as a McGuffin, with multiple characters going on about how dangerous it is and how it absolutely needs to be kept out of the wrong hands. Heck, keeping the Crown out of the wrong hands is shown to be the one thing the feuding Black Adam, JSA, and Tomaz all agree on. So its built up as a pretty big deal. But when the bad guy gets the crown, and the demons who empower him command him to bring "Hell on Earth", what's the best he can do? A bunch of skeletons who are so utterly pathetic that random civilians (including folks who, let's be real, aren't exactly in great physical shape), are able to easily take them down with improvised weapons. In other words, the best this demon supervillain can do is call forth minions who are in every way WORSE than the minions he had as the head of Intergang. Where those guys were super technologically advanced and actually could keep Khandaq's people in line, the skeletons are utterly pathetic. Again, this may seem like a small point, but I don't think it is. I think it badly undercuts the threat posed by the villain and his McGuffin crown that (again) so many characters spent so much of the movie speaking fearfully of, if the worst that happens is we get some easily disposed of Skeletons. How is that bringing Hell on Earth? I feel like, in order to be worthy of that, and also to justify all the fear everyone had of this crown, there needed to be something way more formidable brought forwards.
@bluegecko13

Doesn’t the villain use the crown to become Sabbac? Sure, the zombie dudes were lame, but considering that Sabbac killed Dr. Fate, and was on par with Black Adam (or perhaps even stronger than him since BA needed Hawkman’s help, and Hawkman needed Fate’s helmet), it still doesn’t undermine how dangerous the crown was.
@daniellauricella5132
@daniellauricella5132 Жыл бұрын
@@sfkapacheoutlaw5348 It undermines it somewhat though. Because powerful supervillains are something that universe has seen before. The demons still commanded him to "bring Hell on Earth" and in that he failed spectacularly. So I still think it's a problem with the movie's climax.

@@daniellauricella5132 But you were making it seem like the skeleton army was a big problem for the movie because it made it seem like this crown that everybody feared this whole time was actually weak, and that there was no reason to fear it at all. I think that this movie had great potential in exploring the ideas of victims vs oppressors (in relation to the King’s reign, Black Adam’s backstory, and modern Candaq), justice vs vengeance (in relation to the JUSTICE Society of America), and good vs evil (in terms of heroes and villains) and how antiheroes blur the line between these ideas and whether they have good reason to. In terms of Black Adam comic lore, this movie leans far more heavily into early 2000's stuff and The New 52, which makes sense since those 2000's books were the most recent comics coming out around the time The Rock was cast as the character so that was probably always a loose framework for him and where the JLA stuff comes from, and then the New 52 was just obvious since Shazam! as a movie was a more polished (and better) version of those early New 52 Shazam backup stories in Justice League, so I kinda just assumed Adam would draw from that source material too (although thankfully not as much, I'm sorry I hate harping on it I just really freaking dislike Geoff Johns Shazam so much).

I feel the same. The movie was very enjoyable but I felt it missed the landing on emotional impacts that it was aiming for. One big thing I wish they added was maybe 5-10 minutes of back story of justice society. Hawkman and Dr. fate kinda just appeared on screen and you’re supposed to buy into their team dynamic and respect their authority just because of a short conversation with waller. Their characters deserve so much more back story to make you feel invested into them. And Pierce brosnan was chefs kiss casting. Overall a pretty good movie but can’t help but feel it could have been better.

I've seen the movie four times already. The weakest parts of the movie are the script and The third act villain. Here are the things that stood out to me during the thrill ride: 1. Black Adamn's theme music is menacing and heroic at the same time. Definitely one of the better theme music in superhero films. 2. Black Adam was badass. Definitely want to see more of him. 3. I've never ever cared about Hawkman, but he was involved in some of the best action sequences throughout the movie. Plus, his costume was top notch. 3. Doctor Fate looked majestic. His magic was severely turned down, but it was great to see him on screen. 4. Again, the action sequences carried this movie. 5. Lastly, I felt all the heroes looked great on screen & shared a great dynamic. Looking forward to eventually seeing Black Adam vs Superman. Having a Shazam vs Adam show needs to happen as well, but that character also needs a lot of work.

I think part of why I enjoyed this movie as much as I did is that the filmmakers seemed to know that they didn't have a strong enough story to have characters sitting around discussing the plot for ten minutes, or a drawn out night-before-the-battle sequence or a whole bunch of comedic fish-out-of-water scenes when Black Adam first awakens, so they don't do any of that and instead keep their foot on the gas when it comes to the action.

The film should have been set in the late 1940s due to the fact that the JSA are golden age heroes and Black Adam should have just been the true villian of the entire movie not some another redeeming anti hero. I was actually really impressed by the final episodes of Dwayne Johnson's show Ballers. Spoilers ahead, but for a show that was the Coors' Light of TV shows, for Dwayne Johnson to make himself the villain of his own series took guts. You didn't have to commit to that and the show would have ended fine. But, he went for it and we finally got to see how bad he's been on everybody else and much happier every character was without him. While most of his films are pretty forgettable, I enjoyed Hobbs & Shaw, and Pain & Gain.

The way I see it, this is a movie that originally was only about Teth Adam himself, but got all of the Justice society and intergang stuff thrown in because the studio wanted to build up future properties and the writers didn't know how to write a movie just about Adam. His story was very interesting to me. The fact that he was someone who never asked for what he got and lost everything in the process is managed in a way that was very intriguing and challenging to me, especially the way they handle the twist of him not actually being the "chosen one" at all, and the way his people wanted him to be not being at all who he was. I wanted to see THAT movie, I wanted to explore THAT story deeper, but it was only like a third of the whole thing. The justice society stuff was not too bad per se, but it felt completely disconnected to Adam, and it felt like it was only relevant to Adam because the movie says so and no other reason. Like it belonged to a completely separate movie. And because of that, I simply couldn't bring myself to care about them at all. And I personally had a problem with the musical score, not because it was bad or anything, but because it just NEVER STOPPED. Almost the entire movie has music blaring at full volume in the background, and with the already visually packed scenes that it kept putting up, the entire thing ended up being an assault to the senses that diminished even the better parts of the movie. And everything about intergang was so generic and bland that I forgot what the bad guys were called 2 seconds after they stopped saying it. Overall, I was most worried about Dwane Johnson's performance prior to seeing this movie, particularly because he hasn't really shown his acting abilities the way someone like John Cena has. But it turns out he did a great job, and managed to explore all of the character's nuances and conflicts through acting alone much better than even the script could. I just wish we got more of that instead of what we actually got.

I'd say it's the exact opposite - the only JSA character that I felt really got fleshed out was Dr. Fate, though Aldis Hodge does an admirable job with what he's given as Hawkman. Sr fate has so much potential. Being someone who is not familiar with that character at all, I think the character is really cool, I like how golden his magic abilities are, I stead of just bright yellow light. I like the voice he speaks when he uses the helmet, i like how clean his entire attire is and it makes sense from the way he fights, where he dont make any physical contact unless it's the illusions. The effect they had when he speaks with the helmet really makes you feel he can be at any place at the same time. I wasnt that disappointed when the character died, buy I was disappointed and also wtf, when that helmet suddenly disappears, because I thought someone is going to pick it up and carry it on. But all in all I actually really enjoyed the movie, mainly because the action scene are really cool. Cyclones ability is just beautiful, dr fates abilities obviously and also a lot of scenes like when BA was just released, the scene where hawkman redirect the lightning with his mace. And I'm not sure what it is, even when he uses his lightning, I mean it's one of those that's been time many times in other superpower scenes in other movies but the way he uses it at the beginning, choking the guy and trying him bone dry, and that chain lightning he makes too. Besides all the great effects I think it also shows a lot of the characters a abilities in just one movie. Which compared to marvel's, their scenes are always so calculated, they limit the ways one character can use their ability, to save it for future projects, youd see 1 character with maybe 1 or 2 ways they use the ability and youd just see them using it over and over.

I agree for the most part. I would have preferred they reveal Dr Fate approached Carter Hall regarding his visions of an apocalypse. The JSA predating the JLA it would have been nice if they revealed the group had been retired explaining why we didn't see anything about them in any of the movies. So Carter who is running a training academy is semi-retired himself, but Fate persuades him to enter the field using what resources he has. Two rookies he's been training end up coming along despite their reservations, but even with the attempt to travel to Kahndaq secretly is thwarted when Waller contacts them attempting to warn them off as the US Govt is involved with Intergang that are currently running Kahndaq. The Energium that can only be found there being used for jet cycles and advanced weapons being so useful perhaps throw in a Lex Corp insignia or whoever Morgan Edge's company is called. The Crown of Sabbaq is recovered and Teth-ADam is released. Yes released as he's a final fail safe in case the Crown falls into the wrong hands. Due to Waller's continued interference the Crown ends up being used ending up in a bitter fight between Teth-Adam, the JSA and Sabbaq ending when Adam forcibly removes Sabbaq's crown restoring its bearer to normal (albeit unconscious) and the Crown is then placed in hiding with "Black Adam" left as protector of Kahndaq to insure that remains the case. I would have revealed the Crown is recovered by a Lord of Chaos despite Fate and Adam's efforts so we have a reason for a sequel to this movie that doesn't involve an invasion of Kahndaq. I really wish they had simply had Clark Kent ask for an interview with Teth-Adam rather than him turning up as Superman. Yes it was nice to see, but he does have a day job and it would be nice if that was addressed in a movie as that kind of cameo instead.

I did honestly like the movie but tbh I’m so tired of super hero movies 😭 and I’m a nerd I’m just a history and sci-fi nerd and there have been so many dang super hero movies in the past 10 years alone Edit: also you are rn for me talking about the good vs evil thing and tension between the characters, for me personally for 100% of the movie I was so extremely annoyed at the supers for trying to stop black atom and saying that he’s evil and locking him away forever so they thought… like 100% was very upset by this the whole time

I only had 2 major complaints. 1) Dr Fate was so amazingly done I was pretty bummed out how he kept taking the helmet off at will during the fights, it's the same actor/actress syndrome all the time where they have to be seen instead of who they are portraying and 2) the implication at the end that Superman works for or with Waller, major pissing off they did there. However, to me it looks like they are trying to make a new Superman/Shazam The Return of Black Adam like the animated movie, which was pretty good (in general animated movies from DC are amazing) so we have a second Black Adam to look forward to

Black Adam is fun alright, but not compelling in story. Its like a character without anything to do but the movie just gives him something to do, not the character gives the movie to do. Its like playing GTA without any story. The end of the film is just Black Adam learns his catchphrase

I think the moral quandary over killing works because of the context it's in. The film doesn't ask if killing itself is okay, it asks if the Justice Society has any right to tell Black Adam and Khandaq they're wrong for killing the mercenaries ruling the country. When Hawkman and Fate get told off by the leading actress that they only got involved in peacekeeping when someone powerful emerged from Khandaq, and not when Khandaq was oppressed, the film gives an answer: foreign powers that never bothered to help don't get a say in the debate.

I think a big part of why actual action movies are out of favour with Hollywood audiences now is because of wrestlers becoming a thing. Everybody blames superhero movies for dumbing shit down but I think Fast and the Furious is more to blame. Superhero movies just killed it off. Guys like the Rock spent their entire lives relying on camera tricks to sell it to the audience. I do think this is one of Johnson's better movies. A big part of that is the other characters in the movie. I'm really happy to see Aldis Hodge and Sarah Shahi get cast in a big movie. I didn't expect much from Pierce Brosnan as Dr Fate but somehow him just standing there looking the part half the time managed to do it.

I actually liked love and thunder… because it was so wildly different. it was sad, which for most, makes it a poor escape… but if you’re not looking for a comedy, the drama’s pulled off pretty well. love and thunder was funny only for the last few minutes… while they set up the story for a possible sequel.

I like particularly how it showed the difference in how the power was used compared to Shazam. The latter you get a story about a kid getting these amazing powers and being careful not to hurt anyone too bad and enjoy the luxury that he gets to be an adult who lucked out into getting the power compared to someone having no qualms about using his powers in the most vicious ways and seeing just how terrifying the power of Shazam can be when unhinged along with someone who gets it that gets a more traditional strong willed approval to get the power.
