In an episode that sees Jim, Pam, Andy, Angela and Dwight try to eat a meal at Michael Scott and Jan's condo, Dinner Party is probably The Office's crowing achievement. The high point of a sitcom with many great episodes. In this episode I break down what I enjoy about the episode so much.

I think a really great episode is “The Lover” when Michael tells Pam that he’s dating her mom. It’s comically wonderful and underrated and I think it should be up there with Dinner Party and Stress Relief. Michael was his usual chaotic self but with a hint of fatherly sternness and I was laughing out loud the whole time, especially at the “I’m just going to date her harder” “what does that mean?” “I think you know what that means.”

I didn’t like the way the wrote Andy’s character at the end. I think they should have just made him the new DunderMifflin manager after Michael and drove on without bringing in Ferrell and Spader. Scotts Tots loses a lot of its power from not being believable. Dinner Party was set up sooooo well. Scotts Tots was not. Why did no one vet Michael in any way, any bank statements or financial records, paying into a fund in advance that would be taken from when they graduated, any of the actual stuff that happens with charitable donations. Throwing that logic to the wind, no one even asks where he works to see if there were any chance he'd be able to raise that much money eventually. They just think since he's white and has a suit that he has multiple millions to give away.

The later seasons are serviceable. Robert California is funny and terrifying, and I'll take whatever writing it took to arrive at Angela's confession that Dwight is the father of her baby. That moment on the side of the road is hilarious and awesome. If we need a scapegoat for S8, it's Nellie. She was funny in Search Committee, and it should have ended there. Her character is overall superfluous and boring, and horrendous in the "usurp the throne" storyline. It is only vindicated by the follow-up storyline with Andy bringing back David Wallace, which is sullied by Andy's acting story arc, which is vindicated by his autotuned viral video.

The injury is probably the first episode that really shows the compulsive nature of Michael, and is a template for later episodes like Gay Witch Hunt and Grief Counseling. Michael has a personal issue then feels the rest of the office needs to share in his issue which culminates with a lecture meeting in the conference room. Michael’s injury morphs into a disability and since Michael is not getting the attention or sympathy he wants, he conducts a disability awareness seminar in the conference room, complete with guest speaker (guy in a wheelchair), and pictures on the wall of famous people with disabilities.

Okay now this has been a constant problem I've been noticing with these commentary videos on The Office that people tend to comment on how the show unfolded in the later episodes. I honestly enjoyed the show for the most part, although i agree how they handled Andy's character was a bit poor. But it is also important to remember that as much as this is a comedy and i would have loved some running gags to never end, the show needed to wrap up with the characters fulfilling their character arcs. And that was done very well. The Office is not just another ordinary sitcom, it is far deeper than that and it's story structure just shows it.

You wished the office ended here? That just seems pretentious. The office had so many great characters introduced later on and so many great plot lines. Saying stuff like that for this video seems short sighted. Maybe the office isn't for you. (or at least all of it)

Listen, I get what he is saying. Making everyone having a happier ending isn't realistic - the ending to this episode is more realistic so all he is saying is that he wanted something a bit more relatable. I'm not saying I agree, but I get it.

So happy to see this as this has always been by far my most fav episode. And in the same vein as horror, these characters (because the dinner won't be ready for 3 hours) are captive though some try to get out of their situation. And Jim's attempts to flee (with Pam throwing even HIM under the bus) make the episode even funnier. It will always be my most favorite episode of The Office.

A beautiful and brilliant analysis. But I am surprised you seem to not like the later Michael seasons. Yes, they get more emotional, or sentimental, but I think the series earns it and goes beyond mere "cringe" and creates an overall 7 season tale that could be called The Redemption of Michael Scott. The Office is not cynical or ironic, overall. It is sincere. It is the anti-Seinfeld. And I say this as a largely cynical person who was surprised by my emotional response to the humanity of the storytelling of The Office.

I can't believe people still think it was likely for an affair between Pam and the mic guy to happen. His interest in her seemed pretty obviously one-sided, and she was oblivious to it. People blow that storyline way out of proportion in terms of where it seemed to be going and how supposedly awful it was.

I agree. Making Brian a character really took me out of those episodes. He should've have tried with a married woman, or that's how I saw it. When I rewatch the series I stop at Michael's departure now. Saw it all the way through once, never again. The series does become cartoony, Dwight & Andy work in spades, really should've given us more of the others. Kevin, Phyllis, any of them. Giving Pam a "love triangle" when Jim & her already had their moment is unnecessary and I didn't like later Jim, took me out of them because Jim was supposed to be better than Roy, he's not perfect. But this was uncomfortable for me, didn't need the Mic Guy story. Gonna rewatch some Kevin clips.

LOVED the video!! my favourite office episode is definitely when dwight betrays michael lol this video was such a uplifting man! Long time no watch any of your content i know u have no reason to know this but: your video made me so happy man i'm a chilean fan of yours, actually found your channel in a bad time, like a year ago. but now in my country things are gettin' pretty messed up. military is on the street killing people, curfew has been installed, broadcast are banned outside the country, police is being brutal to old people and children. my best friend's brother was unfairly taken by the police 3 days ago and they don't want to give any information, this behaviour it's across the whole country. anyways. In such a bad time for the country i live in, this is such a relief... really u have distracted me for almost 11 minutes about everything that sorrounds me and i can't thank u enough. Cheer best. edit: grammar

I love the whole scene in Michael and Jans bedroom. The white and egg shell white. Jan is moving the camera out of the way, embarrassed, and Michael is grinning, clearly having left that there to show everyone he had an intimate relationship. The George Forman grill in the background. The whole thing with “thanks that’s my bed.” Perfect television for the whole episode, I could go on, but that scene is just so perfect.

I genuinely loved season 9 of the Office. It’s my third favorite season behind seasons 2 and 3. Season 8 was the worst for me personally, but I really enjoyed the new characters in season 9, and the Jim/Pam conflict. It felt very mature and genuine-a family having conflict because of differing desires, miscommunication, and the difficulties of the “in the trenches” years of having multiple young kids-I thought it was all portrayed very authentically and is something a lot of people can relate too. I loved how the ultimate message is to put your spouse and your marriage as the number one priority, and in that environment of love and trust, your spouse will be more likely to encourage your dreams because they know you love them first no matter what. It’s wise advice. I also really enjoyed the payoff between Dwight and Jims friendship and Dwight and Angela. The finale still makes me cry every time. The idea of treasuring the small mundane moments that really make up 90% of your life. I really enjoyed it, so the Office has a huge dip for me in season 8, but entirely redeemed itself to me in Season 9.

And they didn’t overplay all these details waiting for an audience reaction either. For instance, on the house tour when they went into the bedroom and Jan said “Honey I asked you to pick up in here” and tried to subtly put the camcorder under the bed. And the running joke that Pam was hungry and the main course was still not done. And that we didn’t know until the garage meeting with the guys that they were there for a business opportunity, other than the workspace with the quick shot of “Serenity By Jan”. I started feeling sympathy for Michael in the Bring a Child to Work Day episode where he showed the video of his appearance on the kids show and you realize he had no friends in childhood and how the office people truly were his only “friends” in life.
