One thing that you missed, surprisingly about the line is the most obvious thing. It's a payoff to the earlier science bros scene where Tony and Bruce become friends. "What's your secret? Yoga, Pilates, a really big bad of weed?" (zaps Bruce and leans in to see the reaction) "OWW" Cap: "Hey, what's your problem?" "Wow, you've really got a lid on it don't you?" Forty Five or so minutes later, " *That's* my secret Cap....I'm always angry." I love when characters continue a relevant conversation much later on.

I've been using this line as a joke/running gag since the movie came out in 2012. No other line from all MCU movies stuck with me and resonateted as strongly as this one. Hell yeah, it's iconic.
@camipco5 жыл бұрын
That line simultaneously connects and distances the character, and the MCU in general, from the comics and previous films. "You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry" is among the most famous superhero catchphrases, and so many iterations of Hulk over the years has used it. "I'm always angry" is a reference to that line, of course, operating as a touch of fan service. But it also distinguishes Ruffalo's Hulk from all the others, by reversing the logic of the line and creating something new. The MCU actually pulls a similar trick with Cap in The First Avenger where in the movie theater the bully yells "who cares" setting up Cap for "I care" which is the money line in the 1990 Captain America film, but then instead cuts to "I can do this all day".

I still get choked up a bit with this line every time. It hit home in a very personal way. That struggle: "I'm always angry, I just try to control it as much as I can." I'm not a massive fan of the Hulk, but that line made me a huge fan of Bruce Banner.
@ericmiller56035 жыл бұрын
The way Banner casually yet purposefully turns towards the fight, making that remark, seconds away from willing his transformation, is masterful!
@joeavreg22545 жыл бұрын
The thing about that scene is how many people have a deep and bizarre misread of the concept of anger and people who have issues with their anger. I have read some stupid crap said by people, "What does this line even mean? That anger is the means to control the Hulk? That he has found a way to make his anger placate it?" The fact that people don't get his issue is he is always on the verge of changing and just the little extra push is what ends in the rampage Hulk that will smash and kill without restraint.
@carlsmith45683 жыл бұрын
this is probably the best "one marvelous scene" video on YT. Very nice.
@rattyeely5 жыл бұрын
This scene is good because we spend the whole movie getting to know Bruce Banner's character, and this is the final moment that helps us completely understand him. It also establishes that this isn't a version of the charcter who's going to be worried about getting angry all the time, but a more proactive charcter who will spend more time being the Hulk

Then there's the scene where Cap gives the Hulk the least complicated plan of attack "And Hulk, smash." Simple, direct and to the point. We are treated to one of the few grins from the Hulk. That's part of being a leader knowing and using the strengths of the team. Also another favorite the scene where Loki demands respect from the Hulk, as he is clearly superior. Of course you've probably seen how this is followed with the Hulk grabbing Loki by the boot and flinging him around like a ragdoll. Finally ending with Loki being continually being slammed into the floor of Stark tower. The Hulk walks off with the remark of "puny god".
@khdur5 жыл бұрын
Brilliant choice. My guess is that it's a lot of fans' favorite scene, and likely for reasons that most of us don't want to admit. The MCU has handled the Hulk's arc well IMO...and quite importantly, it has offered us a look into how anger can manifest in and around us even when we deny it a place in our emotional body. The inclusion of anger is very often the missing wrung in our growth and in that scene Banner allows himself the vulnerability of letting his potential teammates (and himself) know that he is more than a monster driven by anger. He is human, and upon this admission he begins a journey to rediscover himself as he rides the circumstances that will then come his way. The costs are seemingly high but he perseveres and navigates the wave of the Hulk's anger marvelously (yeah...sorry) through the films, and his own emotional development. It's handled in a way that can remind us that emotions are moments we can visit, embrace, accept...and then move on from toward the next appropriate feeling on the scale. It's these small steps that allow us each to grow into the best versions of ourselves, and make for wonderfully layered character development.

There's also the entire subplot of how Tony Stark, having on some level faced his duality of Iron Man and himself, knows that Banner can pull this off. Tony thought he'd never be there to care for others and to use his abilities to possibly kill, but only protect, yet in the cave he realizes that he and his friend are stuck and he needs a way out. He realized that the arc reactor in his chest symbolized his weakness, yet simultaneously his ability to adapt and to use his intellect, which had been previously used to make weapons for shady causes, for good. Where Cap seems sceptical of Banner ever coming back to the fight, Stark predicts his arrival and isn't even surprised by it. On some level Banner is the one guy that nobody trusts, yet Stark instantly figures out that if he accepts his duality and realizes that the Hulk is not some separate monster, but rather a part of Banner's own personality and psyche, he will be free and capable of good. In a Jungian sense the situation is an exaggeration of what happens when one's shadow is not integrated (when one is not willing to become a monster, to protect himself or others, or for some other good cause). When Banner realizes that there is something good in Hulk, that his "evil", darker side, his shadow, can be used for good, he accepts that he is angry. He has been angry for a long amount of time and bottling it up. Now he gets the opportunity. He deserved, by all rights, to be angry like everyone else. He just couldn't, because it would lead to disaster. Now he gets a chance to finally agree with Hulk, to work together, to unite his mind. In his mind, the mind of Hulk and Banner, he is always angry.
