I remember seeing Jim a few months before he died, when he said he'd finally given up the Ernest movies and was doing theater work. I remember being shocked at how intelligent, urbane, and polite he was. I wish the world would've gotten to know the real him a little better. That being said, he did wonderful work as Ernest.

@@doubleitp I am going off an interview I saw once twenty years ago so don't take this as gospel - if you wanna go look for it, it was after he did that snowboarding/skiing movie where he was basically Ernest but not. He was without a doubt one of the funniest men to ever live. He didn't have to be vulgar, he didn't have to cuss, he didn't have to do trashy things. He was just flat-out funny being himself. Jim and his character of Ernest P. Worrell was one of the things that made the 80's so great with his comedic talents. It is a shame he died too soon in life. 50 years old for a man like him just isn't fair, and the world hasn't been as funny without him since.

First saw Jim in commercials around 1980 ish. After my kids were born, the movies followed. My kids' intro to Jim was Ernest goes to Jail. Laughed ourselves sick over the floor buffing scene. The very best thing about Jim, to me, was how he could entertain both kids and adults without cursing. Not one thing in those films ever offended my Mom standards, even though he had a love interest in nearly all of them. Some of the humor was aimed at us adults, but it was never raunchy. That alone is a HUGE talent of itself!

I looked it up if anybody else was wondering: "On September 9, 1985, Tom made his debut on a new syndicated, nighttime version of The Price Is Right (previous versions were hosted by Dennis James and Bob Barker). Kennedy's version of the show faced increasing competition (from shows such as Jeopardy! and the nighttime version of Wheel of Fortune) and failed to earn prime access slots and often found itself in late night time slots. After 170 episodes, the show ended it's run on May 30, 1986 (reruns continued to air until September 5)."
