This video is all about how I created a small, Lofoten-Inspired environment in Unreal Engine 5. This video isn't a step-by-step tutorial like most of my other videos, but rather a workflow and process video. You'll learn how I created everything you see in the intro, from the ocean, the mountains, and how I scanned an old arctic cabin, with the help of RealityCapture.

My grandfather was born on the Skrova Island, Lofoten in 1926 I believe. He used to tell stories, life was as hard as you could imagine for a society like this one back in the day but he was also blessed to have been able to grow up in such a special place in that specific time. He later became a pastor and the best of men. Their childhood home is still standing and my parents visit sometimes. Hopefully I'll be able to go and check it out one day myself but I can assure you that there's no doubt that anyone who makes the journey won't regret it.

As a local lofoten resident, this first came to my (weird) mind: No one would build a cabin of this type here. Perhaps if it stood on pillars and been properly anchored. This cabin would probably have been washed away by big waves or wind in the first autumn/winter storm, it is located without shelter from the wind (trees, outcrops etc) on a small very exposed islet. And the cabin is too far down to the sea, indicated by the seaweed. Normal high tide is too close to the cabin. If there is a large high tide, the cabin would probably be under water. (Sorry to say that..). But.. it LOOKS extremely good!! Very believable and beautiful! Impressive how meticulous you are with the details, fantastic job! Thank you so much for this gem of a video!! :)

agreed, and the camera shake makes it look artificial too, anyone shooting with a gimbal or slider and a 50mm and 85mm lens is going to use native camera stabilization to get rid of exactly what he put back in the shot. The camera shake on his render doesn't make it look real, it makes it look like a video game.

@@thecalloftheroad it’s not that people that use those lenses would get rid of the shake irl, I think it looks “fake” because well 1, the shake itself isn’t very human like, probably better to actually capture human camera shake and import that to the unreal camera instead. Then also the camera shake is not really motivated, especially the medium shot with the title card. because of the drone shot it kinda made it look like the medium shot was being shot from the middle of the air / water but somehow we’re supposed to believe a person is holding it.

Coming from TV, I knew nothing about how those renderings were done. I am blown away not only by the end result, but by the artistic process involved. In the end, the only thing that really gives this away as a synthetic creation is how the water looks at the very edge, where it interacts with the rocks. I suppose that's a limitation of the technology used. But if that's all that is missing to create truly photo-realistic renderings, I think we can all agree the technology has matured extremely well! Thanks for introducing me to your universe and sharing your artistic process. This is inspiring for a lot of us creators, be it in the real world or the digital realm. :)

I didn't believe it was CG. Photogrammetry explains the realism. Awesome

I have tinkered a lot with UE5, but what you are showcasing here with adding Reality Capture to the mix is just TOO COOL. Thanks a ton for the inspiration.

Hi William, this was recommended to me by KZbin (probably because of my love of Lofoten and tech). Intended on watching a minute or two and stayed for the whole thing. Fascinating! And you may not think this but you’re very skilled and clearly great at your craft. Subscribed!

It's really nice to see someone else with a lisp. I am so self conscious about my lisp and always feel I sound less intelligent, but it's awesome seeing someone else with a similar way of talking.

If it hadn't been for the video title, I might've thought it was real in the first shot. That scene was as close to realism as I can imagine for a render. What gives it away is the interaction of the water with the shore line, because there is none. Apart from that, it's an AMAZING render!
