My first day as a Toyota salesman, a disheveled old man walked into the showroom. The entire sales force scattered. I welcomed him to the dealership.... He asked dozens of questions, the answers to which I offered without a commitment from him. Never ending questions. He bought 38 pick up trucks on my first sale, then a minimum of 12 each in 24 locations nationwide over the following 6 months. ............Lesson learned!

OK, True story....Back around 1978 I was a mechanic working at JANACO Porsche/Audi/BMW on Firestone and the 605 freeway, I think now it's McKenna Dealership. I was in my 20's and a line mechanic during the week and on weekends I put on a shirt and tie and was a salesman. One dark rainy Saturday afternoon this old guy wearing overalls covered in all colors of paint, shoes included was standing in the BMW showroom. No salesmen talked to him and I waited to see if any would. After a few minutes and no one around I walked up and greeted him. He was a real nice guy and wanted some info about the BMW 733 which was a very expensive 4 door mini Limo, a beautiful car. I gave him the information book and talked about the car, then he asked about the BMW 528 smaller 4 door and I gave him the book on that one too. Somehow the conversation turned to fishing and where the best lake was for trout. I told the old guy I was going to the coffee machine for a coffee and could I get him one too, He said sure, thank you. After a while he left but returned the next day, Sunday morning looking for me. He handed me two frozen trout he caught and again we were talking fishing. I noticed he was still wearing the same overalls covered in paint. He kept looking at that black 733 BMW on the show room, waved good bye and then he left. That afternoon he came back with a briefcase asking for me, still wearing the same paint covered overalls. I greeted him, offered another cup of coffee and he said no thanks, I'm here to buy cars. "I want that black 733 BMW in the showroom, the rose red 528 BMW for my Wife and a white 320 BMW for my Son". After we sat down in my office and wrote up all three cars he paid cash from his briefcase. The reason I found out why he wore overalls covered in paint was he owned a company that painted older mobile homes in mobile home parks and was making bank doing so.......Anyway, true story, sorry about the long read thought some would enjoy it.

In late 70's, I went to a car sale store. I was an old small Bronco. I walked into the store and met a sale man. I asked for the price of the vehicle. He immediately asked, "What do you do for living?" I answered, " I just full around like you", and simply walked out without further conversation.

I walked into a Chevy dealer in Riverside, Calif with every intention in buying the new at the time 1999 Corvette. I tried to get a salesman to help me and they all said “I’m busy right now” maybe it was the way I was dressed, T Shirt & Jeans with holes in them. That’s the way I dressed everyday. Anyway this new young sales girl who was as nervous as can be approached me and I told her I would like to buy the Maroon Corvette they had on the showroom floor. Her eyes got huge and she asked how much I would be putting down. I said, all of it.. all of a sudden the older salesman tried to push her out of the sale to which I said “Excuse me but you had your chance now beat it”! I also made sure she didn’t get screwed after the sale on the commission because I called the GM of the dealership and said she had better get every penny or I would contact the labor board. She sent me a letter thanking me a week later for sticking with her even though she was new and did make a lot of mistakes. But that’s a part of learning I had told her when we were doing the paperwork! She’s now a manager at another dealership in Southern California and doing great!

Same thing happened in Auckland, New Zealand. A quietly dressed older man entered the Mercedes’ truck division sales room. The senior salesman, noting the underdressed man, sent the junior salesman over to she what the old man wanted. He wanted three Mercedes tractor units!!! The senior salesman quickly interceded, whereupon Mr Gubey (owner of a chain of supermarkets) dismissed him. “I wasn’t good enough for your attention before, you are not getting it now. Be gone! The junior salesman received the entire commission. 👍

This happened to a friend of my wifes . She was a junior salesperson in a realestae office in one the most exclusive beachside suburbs in Sydney. Late on a Saturday afternoon an old bloke dressed in board shorts and t-shirt came and asked to look at a property they had advertised. The owner of the agency said, we're just about closing come back later. My wifes friend said, i have some time I'll take you there. On Monday morning a new Bentley pulls up outside the office and a well dressed man in suit and tie comes in. The owner rushes over bowing and scraping, hello sir how can i help you. The old bloke says, you cant help me you were too busy on Saturday. I will only deal with that lady over there. True story .

I have a story almost just like this . The man I worked for drove a faded old Lincoln and looked like he slicked his hair back with motor oil . But at the time he was one of the wealthiest men in Beaumont Texas . He was disrespected at a large restaurant chain that had just opened there . Two days later he went back and had bought the franchise . He went in and asked if anyone remembered him and got the same response , he fired everyone there and closed it down till it was reopened with all new staff . I was a young man working at one of his machine shops . We became good friends and I spent many hours talking with him about many things other than machine work . He was a brilliant man with a list of patents as long as his arm he owned . I hope everyone that watched this video learned something bless everyone and respect the old people that built this country you may learn something the easy way .

My cousins husband was car salesman in Ford dealership. On day a older man wearing bib overalls, T shirt and boots. Clothing was clean and man was clean shaven Man had his daughter. A salesman approached man who said he was looking to buy a new car for daughter who is graduating from high school. Salesman helped man, showing him some cars daughter wanted to see. Finally daughter picked out car. Salesman asked old man to come in office to get paperwork done. Salesman asked how much old guy was going to put down Old guy stood up, pulled a waud of money out of pocket that would choke a horse . Told salesman give me your best out the door cash price. A price was agreed to including DMV paperwork license. Old man asked to speak to management. Manager showed up and old man said he had been to 4 other car dealers and no one offered to help him. This was only dealership that helped so he bought car. Old guy said apparently other dealers didn't think he had money.

I am 77 years old and usually dress in jeans & t-shirt. Some ten years ago, something similar happened to me. Walked into a new car dealership, seeking a late model used car. Entering the showroom, I noticed three salesmen drinking coffee, standing in a group. There were five new cars sitting on the showroom floor... I walked from car to car, taking time at each to examine the vehicle. From time to time I'd glance over at the sales' staff, still chatting away at each other. After nearly 20 minutes of exploring the showroom and having no sales' person approach me... I departed. Next day went to a different dealership (same auto brand) where I was greeted warmly. I bought a 'newer' used car that day and have bought two new cars in the following years at that same dealership

NEVER judge a book by its cover . Many years ago I worked at a high end fashion store in New York . They specialized in couture fashions and carried the best of everything . One day two two ladies strolled in wearing house dresses and flip flops . The entire staff completely ignored them except for the fur manager. With his assistance, the mother and daughter spent in access of $500,000 dollars in one day ! In follow-up visits , they spent over $1,000,000 ! If one of the staff had taken the time to assist these ladies , their commission would have been $50,000 ! Sometimes extremely wealthy people will shop in motley cloths just to fool the staff . I think the above should be a good lesson for any would be salesperson . Never ever judge a book by its cover 😅 !

Happened to me. Went to Dodge dealer dressed short and tshirt. Was looking at red Viper on floor. I was ignored. Finally I asked to talk to a salesperson. A guy came out and stood no closer than 20 feet from me by office door. He was very rude and dismissive. I was willing to buy either silver or red at the time-cash. So, I asked his name as he never offered it and left. Went home- called another dealr that had silver on the floor ( Shingle Springs Dodge) I bought next day. I drove directly to other dealership in my silver Viper. Asked to speak with manager. Showed him the car and purchase order dated that day and explained about his salesman. Cant remember his name. Lets just say, He looked beyond pissed yet very apologetic. I assume that salesman no longer worked there after that day. Very satisfying experience.

In 1985 I walked into a Buick dealership with my 4 year old son, and walked up to a beautiful new Buick. I was well dressed but three salespeople ignored me laughing and drinking coffee. I opened all the doors and hood and trunk and then slammed them shut. Still I was ignored. My son said, "daddy, when can we go home." I replied by shouting, "well as soon as one of those people can sell me a car." Still being ignored, suddenly the sales manager came out and said, sir, is everything okay?" He had heard me shout and all the banging of the doors, etc. I told him I was completely ignored by the salespeople, whereby he said, "sir is this the car you want." I replied in the affirmative, and he said, sir, if you will come into my office I will show you our invoice and you can purchase the car for $100.00 over our invoice. I did and bought the car, whereby we both walked into the showroom, and he walked up to the three salespeople, including a nice looking lady, and told them to clean out their desks, as they were fired.

Harrison Walker's story is both inspiring and thought-provoking, showing how true power lies in resilience and character. His calm response to mistreatment and subsequent actions demonstrate the strength of quiet determination. By purchasing the dealership, Harrison not only took control but also redefined its values, transforming it into a place of integrity. My experience at a car dealership here in Houston was at a dealer, Mac Haik Ford. That day I took my wife to work early one morning and stopped by Mac Haik Ford to get some literature and talk to a salesman about getting my wife a new car. This dealership’s ‘catch phrase’ was “Get that Great Mac Haik Feeling”. I walked in the show room looking around at all the vehicles. I picked up some brochures from one of the displays. I sat down and watched what I figured was salesmen talking among themselves. After 20 minutes or so I got up from my seat and said “Sir, Is anyone helping you”. He said I’m a salesman. I told him “I’m a customer and right now I don’t have “That Great Mac Haik Feeling”. “How about I go and talk to the sales manager since you are busy scratching your balls”. I got the information and left, never to return to that dealership.

All the other salespeople seemed to avoid him immediately, but I chose to warmly welcome him. The old man asked countless questions about every detail of the car line, from the engine to the warranty policy. I patiently answered, not hesitating even though he showed no sign of wanting to buy. Thinking it was just a casual conversation, I made an effort to address all his inquiries. After a long while, he suddenly asked me to prepare the paperwork and closed the deal to buy 26 SUVs on my very first sale! That wasn’t all-over the next three months, he returned to Nissan dealerships across the North, buying at least 15 more cars at each location for his business.

I've been treated like that a few times. I just don't give the offenders any business. This does remind me of an Elvis Presley story though. It happened when Elvis was just starting to make big money, but most people, save the young ones, didn't know who he was at that time. He stopped in at a Cadillac dealership. when he asked about a car, the salesman blew him off, and said something like he couldn't afford it. Elvis walked out, and came across an older gentleman who was doing maintenance on the dealership property. Elvis strul up a conversation, and asked the man if he thought the Cadillac was a good car. The man replied that he thought it was. Elvis asked him, "If you could have any car here for your own, besides that one over there, which one would you pick?" The man thought about it, and then pointed out a car to Elvis. Elvis shook his hand, and went back inside. This time he had a conversation with the owner of the dealership, and told him of his encounter with the salesman. Then he bought both the car he had his eye on, and the one the man pointed out, and told the owner he wanted the maintenance man to have the sales commission on them. Elvis then gave the man the car he had pointed out, and told him it was his, and thanked him. The maintenance man had the surprise of his life, and if I'm not mistaken, the salesman was canned on the spot.

Absolutely love this story that all customers and people should be treated with respect and kindness no matter how they are dressed or their situation. One thing I've learned...salespeople are selling themselves. The customer is in your store/business because they want what you sell. You can sell the product by YOUR personal interaction with the customer...80 y/o, been there.

As a teen in the early 1960's my family happened to be friends with a musician that had made it to the top. He was a gear head. I had gone off with him both of is in well worn jeans and T shirts.Thjis exact same happened at a high end dealership. I learned that clothes and appearance should never mean anything specially in any kind of sales . He's been gone for some time now but his family still owns the dealership.

In the early 90's when i retired I went to an Adelaide volvo dealer to purchase a new car. The salesman was anything but interested because of the way we were dressed and the company car I came in. he really turned us off so we left. Later we went to a suburban dealership and was very courteriouly reeceived and subsequently purchased the car we wanted. In speaking the dealership, we told our story and he said that this salesman was well know for his poor service and acceptance. So he lost a sale.

I was waiting for over a year for my 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 from a really nice saleswoman in town. My wife’s 2020 Ioniq Electric was bought 60 miles up North when I used to traverse. My 6 arrives and I get a call from a male that my car was arriving in a week. I called back and left messages and he took his time answering my messages. When I told him I was not comfortable dealing with someone who was ignoring me, his response was - and then I don’t want to deal with you either. I called up North who had what I wanted at a slightly higher cost and I took a 2 hour bus to pick up my new car. Oh and the car was bought at MSRP + 500 dealers extra allowed margin. Nice to be independent and be able to tell a sold customer that they don’t want to deal with you either.

24 years ago in August I bought myself a brand new convertible car and paid cash. While I was outside smoking a biker and his lady rolled up cauz he wanted to buy a new truck. I ride also but looked like a regular citizen that day. No one at that Dodge dealership would even go talk to biker. I could see that he was a NAM vet by a couple of patches on his cut/ vest and me being a vet also we had some common ground. I told the biker that he would probably have better luck at the Ford place across the street cauz they didn't care who you were or how you looked and I knew that this dealer was about to lose a sale. His bike showed the money invested. So did his lady. He fired up his Hog, yelled a loud F.U. at the sales people and went to buy a new Ford. I went back in and told the sales people that they had just lost a great sale and they told me they don't like to deal with biker trash. I said then that makes you stupid people. Bikers who own Big expensive Harley's either have the best credit or the cash stash to by what we want,so refund my down payment cauz I am a biker and a Vet also. They sputtered and tried to change my mind but I got what I wanted and left to buy that new car somewhere else.

I work a Chevy dealership as an outside lot manager, 18 months, and had my uncle stop by one afternoon, to visit me and he wanted to look at/for a new truck. My uncle is a farmer and was dressed as such. He came out to say goodbye 30 minutes later and I asked him if he got the info he was after and he said NO, I couldn't get anyone to deal with me. He said I don't know how you work with people that rude and ignorant, but I guess you don't see it working out in the yard here. We said our goodbyes and he left and I went back to work. I thought about what he'd said all the rest of the day and close to quitting time I went in and said "did any of you notice that old smelly farmer earlier" and chuckled. One of the salesman said yeah can you imagine an old dirty guy like that looking at a new $55,000 truck. I said yes with a straight face my uncle was going to give you $25,000 down and finance the rest, because I bought his old truck and he had nothing for a trade so he was going to put a bunch of money down instead. They all were shocked at that and that I knew who he was. He was always a lifelong Chevy owner and went home, two towns over and bought the same truck from another dealership. He came to my dealership as a way of him showing ME support and they treated him like a clown. My uncle owns one of the three biggest dairy farms in New England, never judge on appearance.

I believe lots of us can relate to this situation, although I am not cable of owning a dealership but am much capable of buying a new vehicle, with sufficient cash and top grade credit score, even with a car loan, so often I paid off entire balance in less than a year of time, but I've experienced those treatments, being ignored by floor sales team. I don't dress shabby, drive a decent well maintained clean car when we drove in to the lot and we are still being treated as low class customers.

2X I've walked into dealerships wanting to buy a car with cash. Being an OF now can relate these. In 1968 I walked into a Ford dealer, after work in a factory, in Latham, NY as they advertised a '68 Torino GT Fastback. I actually got a salesman's eye. Asked him how much. He said it's on the sticker, kid (I was still young) then walked away. I went to the Ford dealer in Albany and bought the same car but in black for a much better price then sticker. Went back to Latham found the salesman and reminded him to not play games. #2, found a nice 2 year old BMW convert - nary a salesman could be bothered - shamed a couple with a snarkthen went to the local Ford dealer and bought the perfect T-bird. I worked as a service writer at a luxury dealership for a short time between jobs. This guy that looked like a derelict walked in the showroom. The sales staff almost genuflected. I asked who he was and was told to never judge anyone by appearance and a lesson I well remember, He was the biggest housing developer in the area and was well known as a good customer. He bought the most expensive car in stock using the biggest roll of cash I have ever seen even up to today. The fun of selling some sort of vehicle and the sales force.

On my way home from football / soccer I went into the local Range Rover garage to buy a new top of the range, Range Rover Sport. While sitting in the showroom model the Salesman came over, I asked him how much for this one and the delivery time. The salesman looked at my polo shirt with my team’s logo and looked out the window to see what I was driving. Immediately he said to me we are doing good deals on the Defender that was a totally different model and about half the price. I told him I’m not interested in the defender, two more times he said I could do you a great defender deal. I looked at him and told him that you are judging me by my football polo shirt and the car I’m driving, I told him to stick the sale and walked out. Several days later I bought a Mercedes costing more and with no judgment.

It's happened to me several times (small female, looking younger than I am) and has happened to friends, and I've read many times about someone who was ignored and/or insulted due to the way they were dressed or appeared. If you own/work in a business, you just can't afford to do this. Even such as a little girl selling scout cookies...you never know if her father could come in the next day and spend big bucks...OR -- tell all his well-off friends how badly you treated his daughter or wife. I owned a store for a few years; I pledged not to be that way!

I knew a lady that was treated this way. She went into a dealership that touted their customer service and was treated with contempt. When she saw the salesman soon afterward, he asked her about her car search. She told him, "I went to the other dealer and paid cash for a new Mustang". She said his jaw dropped.

Many years ago my Father sold cars at Rancho Chevrolet in Reseda CA. One day a man in regular working clothes came on to the lot and was looking over various vehicles. At the same time a couple with their young son came in and went straight to one of the new 396 Chevelles on display. A young salesman new to the job went to greet them as this was his "up" as the term went in the trade. An older hot shot salesman steered him to the older man and took the couple with the kid. Turned out the kid was a "looky lou" and nothing else. Then the hot shot tried to horn in on the the kid's prospective customer. The man spoke up and told him to get lost. He saw what the the hot shot did and revealed that he was a close friend of the general manager of the dealership. Every few years he replaced all his fleet of cars and trucks for his construction company. Story: the young salesman made a good commission that day.

After a 40 year career in industrial sales, those "salespeople" out there who take customers for granted usually don't last long. Treat people how you'd like to be treated. The "super salesman" types are usually flashes in the pan - order takers. You can either develop a customer or take an order; one is a long term asset, the other is something that will usually flame out because they will realize how inept the salesperson was/is.

He was a WW2 VET. years latter I joined the Navy. I wrote him a letter and told him that he was my Hero. and I wanted to that him for letting me work at his dealership. Now a days the young people just don`t have time for some old fuddy doddy. Well they have to be taught a lesion like this.

I’m about to be homeless again and can’t take much more. My dream before I pass on is to some how have the money like this elderly gentleman so I could make the people around here to feel the way they treat me when they see me and totally ignore me. An old friend asked me to drive him to a Bentley dealer. I drove a black 6 year old pick up. We were both wearing collared shirts and blue jeans. We got out and he started looking at the Bentleys in the show room. We saw a few salesmen standing on the side looking at us but making no effort to approach. After about ten minutes one of salesmen spoke to an obviously junior salesman and the young man finally approached us and asked if he could help. My friend said "Yes, I want to buy this car" indicating the most expensive Bentley in stock. He added "I will pay cash." He then turned to me and thanked me for the ride, that he would drive the Bentley home, and he did.

I saw basically the same thing. I’m a retired piano tuner, I was in a dealership doing floor tuning. A older man dressed in paint spattered overalls and a sweaty sailor’s cap came into the piano store just walking around looking at brand new shiny high end grand pianos. I watched him, and no salesman approached him.. he finally stopped at a very expensive grand piano about $40,000.00 and finally caught the eye of a reluctant salesman among the group who were ignoring him. I heard the old guy say to the salesman as he was approached and said ‘I’ll take this one, it for my granddaughters birthday’!… There was a large commission lost among the judgmental salesman. It was fun to watch their expressions!!

In the UK I had always had an ambition to buy an Alfa Romeo 42, I went to the local showroom. and the sales guy said take the car for test drive and see what you think, I liked the car and drove back to the show room to talk business, but I found the sales guy was engaged in conversation with an upmarket time waster. He made no effort to communicate with me and I left the keys and left. A few weeks later I went to Portugal to visit our agent and the sales manager had one of these Alfa's and while I was impressed he told me it was a load of junk. Switch's broke, wiper blades fell off, had a replacement gear box etc, I was very relieved.

Something sort of similar happened me. My wife and myself went to a Jaguar dealer to purchase a new car. No one would come and talk to us as we had turned up in an old rusty banger. Eventually someone said that they didn't have time and we should go away and come back again. We walked across the road and purchased a brand new Chrysler. The day of delivery we drove the new car and parked in their reserved parking bay and went in saying what had happened showing our new car. A letter to Jaguar followed with a profuse apology from them and we then learned of a few staffing changes in that branch. I could have been a life long Jaguar customer if it wasn't for that appalling service, now I drive Aston Martin.

When I worked for a major SE heavy duty truck dealer, on my floor day a scruffy looking guy in bib overalls drove up in a beat up old pickup and wanted to look at tractors. The other sales guys sort of yucked it up as I spent a couple hours going through the specs on different stock trucks. So, he made a choice and filled out a credit application and to everyone's shock, was approved for $450k with no down payment. He bought three stock units, at nearly full price, with my commission at about $12k...lesson learned!

An apocryphal story goes that Elvis walked into the Nashville Cadillac dealer to buy a car with $5,000 cash. Dressed in jeans and white t-shirt, Elvis was told to bring his dad back and they would talk to him. Elvis goes out on the street and brings the first old guy he sees into the dealership. “This is my dad, I still want to buy the car.” The deal was made and Elvis buys the car and asks the salesman, who turned him down, what the commission on the sale was. The guy answered $500. Elvis takes back $500 and gives it to the old man. “He earned the commission.” By then they had figured out who young Elvis was.
