The next step is a popping sound when the window is rolled all the way down, or such was the case with my 2009 Highlander. The door checks have about a 10-year life. Why? The plastic (behind the foam you removed) becomes brittle and cracks away. Since it serves to reinforce the metal arm, slop is induced and the arm hits the window mechanism. Relatively simple fix - open up the door and replace the door check assy - mine was $80.
