Yes! I was a Matchbox and Hot Wheels kid, and still am. Don't think I'll ever "grow out" of it. And proud to say my son always wants to grab a car or two every time we go to the store. When Doug started talking about hot wheels, the first thing I thought about was how much I disliked the "concept" and crazy dragon cars. Then he said exactly what I was thinking. I don't like the concept cars either either, at least I didn't when I got older, but they make them because little kids (my younger self included), don't understand the difference, and go for whatever looks the "coolest" or most outlandish. By the time they're old enough to understand real cars, most kids have moved on from them, unless they make collecting them a hobby.

My first Matchbox Premiere car was a metallic teal ‘95 Mustang Cobra convertible that I bought at a swap meet. It was a big purchase for me at the time because I was a stingy kid who didn’t get an allowance. I would go to swap meets with my dad every few months and usually only bought one Hot Wheels or Matchbox car at each, with a budget of about $1 per car. I liked the Mustang Cobra enough to spend $5 on it. That and a couple of 1990s era Johnny Lightning muscle cars (‘68 GT500 and ‘71 GTO Judge) were my first taste of premium collecting in small scale. This video brought back a lot of memories of my early days of diecast collecting, back when I actually knew how many I had. Regarding real cars, it should be noted that two of my favorite Matchbox castings to play with were the Mercury Sable wagon and Volvo 760 GLE. I still have both well-worn originals in my collection.
@COCarDude6 жыл бұрын
This one especially hits home. I was the same way, hated how fake the play mats were, and made my own. Loved customizing matchbox and hotwheels (especially with black, red, and metallic sharpies), and collecting the realistic ones. For me, I was obsessed with sn95 Mustangs (I still am, just the big ones) and collected the 95 Mustang Cobra Convertibles. I did have the purple matchbox prowler, and loved that one as well. Now, it seems Hotwheels makes more realistic cars, and Matchbox is struggling to exist.

I used to have a huge collection of match box cars when I was like 7 or 8. I mustve had like hundreds saved up because I would always get a new one whenever I found them and had been doing so since I was 5. I was able to get them so often because they were all I ever asked for so my mom was happy to get them for me since they were fairly cheap and it's all she needed to do to keep me happy. Then when I went to move to another town we had moved them all into a big box with a lid and had them piled up with all the stuff we were moving out with and at some point they were stolen. We believed it was someone who lived in the same building as us but we could never prove it and it was devastating. It kinda stunted my car interest for a few years but now I am back to living cars and have even found a friend who I can talk to and discuss cars with.

I remember trading Hotwheels when I was about 6 with friends at school, eventually ended up with at least 2000 1/64's mainly Hotwheels or Matchbox. Stopped buying 1/64's when I was around 10-11, stopped buying any diecast in fact apart from the odd one. Then when I was 16 I opened a bank account and started collecting 1.18's. Started with 4 now I have nearly 300 (i'm 19) mainly higher end ones like Autoart, I doubt i'll ever grow out of collecting model cars because even now I've have 2 real cars which I love yet still find myself on eBay every so often buying more models.

My next door neighbor in the 90’s and early 2000’s have a daughter and son in law that both work for Chrysler R&D. They traveled to Alabama to visit their mom often, and would always be in a vehicle with manufacturer plates. They were always very generous in allowing me to drive vehicles, as they were instructed to do so in order to gain consumer feedback. Doug is right, folks were all about those PT Cruisers! I was allowed to drive a blue touring edition PT back in 98, early prototype car. The looks I got while in that car! If only they could have felt how boring it was. They came down one time in a blue Viper GTS around the same time, but unlike other times I wasn’t allowed to drive because the employees had to sign a form stating that they would be terminated if anyone but themselves were involved in a crash.

I felt the same way back in the day. Couldn't care less about the weird rocket shaped hot wheels with crazy paint jobs but I'd take the real looking cars all day. I always loved pulling one out of the package to find it had working suspension. Usually it was only trucks that had that, I don't remember finding any hotwheels like that, usually it was matchbox. I still have a red late 90s regular cab Dakota with suspension somewhere with quite a few miles on it. I've also taken a hammer to a few cars trying to get that wrecked looked. I mastered the fresh out of the crusher look, never could get one wrecked and drivable. Even buried a few in the garden trying to recreate an unrestored car but that didn't work either. I also remember taking sand paper to one and leaving it in a cup of salt water for a few days. Glad I wasn't the only little kid obsessed with scale realism on vehicles.
