I remember doing my windows 25 years ago. It was amazing how hard that revolting yellow waxy stuff had got even when the car was only 18 years old, and the pulleys were all clogged with it. Luckily the motor and reel were all good and so after getting rid of all the old stuff and applying new lubricant those windows worked just fine; no need for voltage boosters etc, just elbow grease!

Elbow grease. Yes I know all about that.

I understand the frustration of things not going as planned, but again, when you are finished you can look back and enjoy how good the car looks when you are finished and yes it was frustrating, but then you won't have any issues for a while. I hope Terry enjoys his retirement, it will be sad not seeing him in the videos with his wisdom shared. Maybe you can get him to come in part time to help you on the car, after he has relaxed for a bit. Keep up the good work Lou, don't sweat having to push out videos every week, business comes first. Congratulations on 5K subs and sorry to hear of Terry's retirement. Very hard to find good people. As for the 308 I have some info for you: 1. The button you are missing for the door card covering the window crank is super easy to make. Nothing more than a round disc of metal with a spring clip on the back covered in door leather. You should be able to bang that off super easily. 2. As for the front console I spotted that one immediately. The consoles that have the built in tray on them like the one you bought are for 1980 and later vehicles. Those cars had the gauges that are to the left of the steering wheel (on your car) moved to the center console in front of the shifter. This totally changes the shape of the center console and means the forward piece is not backwards compatible. That is the bad news. The good news is that the forward console on the earlier cars is SUPER easy to copy in sheet metal (even though the originals are fiberglass) and is nothing more that a U shape covered in black vinyl. No need for anything fancy and you can re-use the steel panel next to the accelerator on your new part. You're welcome to copy the one off of my car if you like.
@LouTrottier2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The button. Yes will likely make one. The console. Not sure what I’m going to do about that yet. Sigh.

FYI - you can replace the plastic pullieys with steel ones used for patio doors. They will last longer and are a lot more durable. Also, there have been some owners that have added springs to the pulley that is used to adjust the tension. This looks to be a lot better then the factory way.

As for the centre console and the front part being different angles, yeah, did some googling and there are some 308's who don't even have the front part. BUT to cover the angle change you can simply make a trim piece wide enough to cover the upper gap, and have it continue over the bottom part so it is a consistent line. I wouldn't suggest it if you were going pebble beach but since you've had to fudge other things along the way, it's totally salvageable without producing an eye sore. I've had to do this SO many times renovating houses where corners aren't 90 deg or plumb....hence why trimmers are in such high demand lol.

Here's what could be a dumb suggestion: how about talking to terry about coming in for a couple or three hours a week to help with the ferrari? This could have 2 benefits: 1) simply stopping working is hard on most guys....I know many who retired and after 2 weeks they were getting restless and started working again and 2) it is something out of the ordinary for him instead of doing regular mech work on boring cars he's doing different stuff.

My congratulations to Terry on his retirement. You have earned it. No doubt about that. However.... I have tried it... and it is not as advertised. You need and have earned a break. So, enjoy some time off. Blow your money generously! Travel.. see the world. Then...when you realize that all those years of building skills and knowledge are not being utilized or monetized... you will be back at the shop. Perhaps working mornings so you get up with purpose and a tight AM timetable ending at 1 PM and then off for the afternoon. Your terms. I have a friend in Calgary and as he approaches 78 he is still at the shop daily 6 days and HIS FRIENDS and many others know where to find him. It is not about the money anymore....sharing and making the maximum use of your knowledge and skills is all that it can EVER be about. Retirement sucks. Worse than a prison sentence!!
