Amazing how new car prices have risen, as opposed to Abbott's promise they would fall when he closed the least subsidised car manufacturer in the world.

Yesterday’s conversation, Dealers says “I just need your drivers license and $2000 deposit and your names on the Patrol for March/April. If your situation changes between now and then, our boss is a man of his word, he won’t screw you over, we’ll give you your deposit back”. I said, “Words don’t cut it, sorry. Put it in writing”. Guess what, no deal was written up. I walked away. P.S Great review once again.

I got my car novated lease but hunted around for the best price myself but the lease company said not to put a deposit down. I did it anyway to lock it in but the pushback from the dealer just to sign a form that I wrote that said when the lease company seals the deal you give me my money back. Trust us was the word of the day, sign a bit of paper was my response. Finally got it.

That alone shows that they knew for a fact that you would not get your car in April. If there was a small chance they would have taken the risk and made sure you were at least ahead of the poor schmucks who had signed up without that provision.

We did one really smart thing: when the dealer told us it'd be three weeks to delivery, we put a Special condition on the contract stating that the deposit could be returned if the car wasn't delivered within two months.

I purchased a new vehicle in 2021. I ordered it on 4 January and I drove away from the dealer on 29 September. There were no new ones in the ‘pipeline’ when I made my initial enquiry so ordered what I wanted (colour, extras, manual gearbox) and was told simply to wait until at least November. I was given an ‘order number’ and a web site so I could follow it from start of build, to its sea journey through to landing in Australia and then call from the dealer to ‘come and get it’. So I did get it a little early - but not by much. Yep. I wasn’t desperate to get it in my hot little hands but I had a 3 year old car that was still driveable until I got my new one - I was not in a hurry. Like you have said, I had done my research before hand and my new car is currently tucked up in my garage. Thanks for the video. But manuals are becoming as scares as rocking horse poo on the Australian market so my next one will be without a clutch. Great work John.

New car buyers seem to be as anxious as horny teenagers to get instant satisfaction. Consumer is such a definitive description of such behaviour. Apartheid South Africa was bancrupted when the most significant segment of society boycotted big business. If car buyers look at their mobility needs and look for alternatives to owning depreciating liabilities for the next 12 months, the car dealers will be begging them to buy cars, new and used at the best prices ever. Don't create demand, let supply build!

I got really lucky, I ordered a new car from Toyota in August and was told a six month waiting list. A month later the dealer called and said someone else had ordered the same spec as me (plain white Prado Kakadu with flat tailgate) and the finance had fallen through. Because it was an unusual spec with low demand I was next in line.

Got our new Toyota delivered Sept 30th, deposit placed with our local dealer August 30th, not the exact colour we wanted and a "top spec" example, but I wasn't firm on those things anyway. Enquiries elsewhere had promised a 6 months plus waiting time for any that model. We were just lucky that the car we got was ordered for stock and was just being loaded on the ship for Australia late August. No special deal but I got the vehicle I wanted, just with a couple of small compromises, top spec instead of mid spec, silver colour instead of white, win,win...

It's not just a shortage of new cars. Looks like maintenance and repairs are also starting to be impacted too. I've got my old Landcruiser in the shop getting a busted seal between the gearbox and transfer case fixed. Turns out I actually needed a full overhaul and rebuild. Fair enough I suppose, since it just ticked over 530,000km from factory. Can't get any transmission shop in Perth to look at the GB until Feb 2022. And there's only 2 brand new genuine GBs in the country. Both in VIC. In the time it took for my mechanic to source and order the new GB, the other one sold.

just used John's Auto Expert service to buy a brand new Hyundai I30 Elite. They also got the best deal possible on my old car. Will you save thousands? Maybe. But in today's new/used car climate, having someone else do all the leg work & negotiating is a huge bonus. Daniel from A E, "what colour are you after?", me, "would love either of the two greys but definitely not black.", Daniel, "are you happy to wait a couple of months to get your preferred colour?", me, "sure..", Daniel, "do you want floor mats?", me, "if possible but not fussed..", etc, etc,. Thanks Daniel & JC.

You thanked them with the part of the deal they took. So John and co might have told you that you could save for example $3k (which is easy to obtain, I’d back myself for that and more off the RRP) but they managed to actually get $7k and pocketed the $4k difference. But as you say, it saved you the hassle which is fair enough.

Before the chip shortage became common knowledge a Jimny GLX was $28990 plus on roads today I’m seeing dealers with stock at between $38990 up to $44990 plus on roads and you obviously don’t get colour, transmission or any other choices. John, Thanks for the A grade content you continue to put out. I appreciate it greatly. Just signed the papers for our first ever new car two days ago. Didn’t compromise on the model, spec and colour we wanted. We’re in no hurry for it and managed to get it considerably (multiple thousands) cheaper than a demonstrator we could have that day. Had a cancellation clause in the contract that if it goes 2 weeks past the delivery date on the document we can cancel the contract with no penalty. No probs for the dealer, he said something along the lines of “When it does come in I’ll just sell it to the next mug for full price who needs it that day”. I still find it hard to fathom however that the price can go up between now and delivery. I think it’s important for people to understand what the dealer can control and what is out of their hands as you mentioned in the vid.

Good point about flexibility. I live in a contrived EU market where fuel is F@#£k Off expensive and inundated with 2L 4 pot oil burners that soon won't be allowed to be driven in city centres to avoid pollution. As elsewhere in the world, due to the chip shortage the 2nd hand market has taken yet another rise. Cars generally are very expensive here. Now, I was in the market with a tight budget for a 5 door Pajero to suit my life style (work in town with multiple journeys per day hauling small tools etc during the week, 2.5 seater Kayak, dog, beach, hunting, fishing at the weekend). Wife was not so keen for a town hyppo so went to Toyo and Lexus to look at "sensible" alternative such as a RAV 4 hybrid. Turns out we were just in for a Dealer guarantee, low mileage Lexus NX in base + business spec fwd. 😀. They just got a return/ trade that week and had in the forecourt. They made an appreciable effort and threw in some goodies, we ( meaning I, this is quite far away from a Mitsu Paj) remained opened minded to live with a car that does 85% of what I need it for. Got added bonuses such as low pollution label to drive in town centre in the future, low fuel consumption, vastly increased comfort, no maintenance hassle, re-sale value. Cool 👍

they do exist if one is willing to pay silly money or has a previous account elsewhere with say a non four big banks to get leasing or loans for it.Had this problem last year.A Fiat 500 in Automatic was 2 weeks away when I turned up in an accident hire car to have a look at what was on offer(I got a call back about the car the next day)only one problem I needed a new car when the news about my 2017 Holden Spark having been written off and a total loss by the insurance company at once.St George rejected my application for Finance on a 2019 Kia Rio GT Line as did the dealer,I was all set to start over with Macquarie for a 2021 new Mazda 2 Pure Hatch with Automatic and Alarm as my other alternatives(The wait for the Fiat meant it was out of the running). Then I thought to myself what exists for way less than all of those toys for about 30% of the price and a lot safer and a better drive than all the cars mentioned on the used car markets.I started thinking W203 C180 Kompressor Elegance Mercedes(There was one within budget)albeit a 2003 model then a BMW 318I e46 Executive Sport 2004 model came into the equation and I even started thinking second hand Mazda's(There were a 2,3 and 6 at a car warehouse years being a 2005 and 2008 respectively)I went with a 2008 Mazda 3 Maxx Sport in the end.3 star safety and yes it's a teenager in car years but compared to some of these light cars I am much safer.

Unfortunately, it was accidentally sold off the display floor. Many apologies and a further 3 months later, the one we wanted arrived but turned up without the factory tow bar fitted. Another 2 weeks later, they delivered the car with a tow bar fitted and an apologetic free window tint which bubbled within 3 years.

Yep, got a notification from MB about that. Cancelled the order. Dealer tried to pull the "bound under contract" line to exert pressure to just accept the spec changes. Got my neighbour (who is a senior partner at one of the Tier 1 legal firms in town) to write to the Dealer. Contract cancelled, deposit refunded in full with an apology for being unable to deliver.

I bought a new car couple years back. I rang the dealer, I want this colour this model and no trade in, how much? Oh by the way I’m ringing 37 other dealers. Ended up getting a ripper deal. Tried it now but some dealers said we are all 32,200 can’t budge an inch, it’s just how it is now. Some of them were months away as well. I still tried and got 31,900 with slimline plates chucked in for free at 185 bucks. So that’s 500 odd bucks. I’m happy given the situation and December delivery.

Try a car warehouse for something newer than what you have now.plenty of 2015-2018's of anything if not fussy about brands or what you drive and avoid new car depreciation.sometimes what you get second hand is better than the new equivalent. If one is thinking new MG3 OR Kia Picanto I would suggest A third generation Mazda 3 or a previous generation Corolla(2014-2017) or one of those if you can find one reborn 2012-2017 Nissan Pulsars which similarly specified are the better and safer choices.most might dismiss those on grounds of warranty and paying a monthly fee for roadside assistance but.Think of it in terms of safety to your loved ones better performance and something that holds it's value.that 3 to 6 year old small car you buy now could be in future some young drivers first car when it's about 10 to 13 years of age.

I understand the supply chain issues and raw materials shortages but the lead time for car deliveries is gone beyond efd up!!! In particular, the leading car brand manufacturers lead time like Lexus, Toyota, Mitsubishi… ffs, wth is going on. I have been looking to buy a new car through my employer on a lease plan, for over 3 months now. I’ve narrowed the selection down to 4 cars: Lexus NX450h, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Exceed, BMW 330e PHEV and Sorento PHEV. Shortest waiting time is for BMW… between 6-12 months. Mitsubishi 18-24 months Lexus 3 years Hyundai- unable to disclose the leading time. To order a car, dealers are asking for 10% deposit and offering no guarantee that the car price will be the same at the time of delivery. Brisbane dealerships can’t even get a demo model to replace the existing test cars. Lease company I’ve been dealing with wasn’t able to help either and the last 3 months I’ve been doing all the legwork. And now… back to the drawing board again trying to figure out what to do. Disappointing and frustrating.

This also explains why the Chinese makers are doing so well at the moment. SAIC and GWM don't seem to have the supply constraints that non-Chinese makers are stuck with at the moment. It'd also explain why Volvo sales are very strong this year (being owned by Geely and all). If there was more choice in the market with shorter lead times, I wonder if the Chinese would be kicking as many goals on the VFACTS chart as they are at the moment.

How then do you do the research on wait time or real delivery time? Asking a dealer is a waste of time, although I got some real advice from a sales manager who told me that not only was the car I ordered not arriving at the end of the five month state wait, the parent company did not have a date set at that time for any right hand drive vehicle. I cancelled the order but appreciated the honesty. I have since ordered another car, another brand and have a contract signed for a delivery at the end of this month. I believe the contract is worthless with regards to ETA of the vehicle though. Just sit back and wait.

It is good that some salespeople are still being honest. If your contract has a vehicles VIN number on it then you may be in luck and have your vehicle delivered soon. If not then I feel you have been misled big time.

Love the channel although some of the reference's in video's go over my head a little as being in the UK the exact geographical location of "shitsville" escapes me and you constantly remind me that our antipodean cousins have always been to idle to call a pick up anything but a "ute" :-) That said I could listen to you for hours, it is refreshing and entertaining to hear someone saying things how they are rather than being politically correct. The truth is often unpopular and overlooked Here is a thought for you, it may even be worthy of content. I took a punt on a 3 year old low mileage fully loaded Infiniti Q30 1.6 petrol, one of only 29 in the UK. its either going to be an expensive paperweight with no parts availability or a rare appreciating modern classic. Whichever it gets a lot more attention than a Focus or an Astra. Keep up the great work
