The best angle is always 45°. The maximum length travelled is reached when sin(2x)=1, where x is the angle. So 2x=90° and x=45°. And yes, I am fun at parties.

Also the mass of the object does not matter once it is in the air with a given velocity. If the velocity is the same for both objects that is a heavy tank and sporty mustang then they should travel the same distance jumping from the same ramp at the same angle before touching the ground if we ignore the resistance of the air because both with decelerate with the same rate in case of Earth 9.807m/s^2.
@Chewyfood4 жыл бұрын
Mathematically you are correct, however I think the problem is the design of the ramp here. If the ramp was made to be long and gradual, then definitely 45° would be the best angle. In this video, though, the ramp is sudden, steep and short. It would appear there are diminishing returns above 20° as seen. As Marco_1504 has implied, because the ramp is so sudden and steep, a 45° ramp of this nature would absorb a lot of the car's force and it would not travel that far. Our high school physics problems regarding this were a bit more optimized for the calculations...heh.
@ExperimentalDude4 жыл бұрын
That only works in ideal physics problems. You need to take into consideration, for this case, the force absorbed by the initial impact which depends on each car's design and, ideally, the best ramp would be a smooth curve with a slow increase in the angle which, again, the angle difference varies per car. And no, I am definitely not fun at parties

A large portion of the speed is lost when the car hits the ramp, especially if it isn't curved at the start. You could have used a longer ramp so the the angle change won't put stress on the suspension. You could design a ramp which is about 50 or 100 meters long and see how much these records improve. Also, you can curve the lip of the ramp so it will increase the chance of the car to fly on a straight line rather than flip.

The optimal angle is 45°, provided the collision with the ramp doesn't slow the car. The only factors are the angle and the speed at which the car leaves the ramp; that's a known physics fact. You'd need a much smoother ramp transition to ensure that the car maintains its speed, though.

Why did the Mustang perform so badly, in terms of performance numbers, it should at least be on par with the Audi, did it bleed off that much speed/energy on the ramp, already?

Gotta factor in the aero drag when airborne. If the angle is too high, the car's nose will either pop up or down thus increasing the aero drag and cutting the distance. Given the same speed for the same vehicle,a lesser angle CAN result in farther jump because it allows the car to remain somewhat horizontal and aerodynamic vs vertical and a parachute.

*@Car Pal* 3:20 -ish. If possible, remove the air resistance, because at these speeds you get the effect of lifting body ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lifting_body ), basically the whole car acts as an airplane wing, so the angle of the car affects the distance it can fly, but if you can remove the air resistance, then you get a more "ballistic" trajectory. Alternatively, if you can figure out a way to make all the cars have the same angle / lifting effect when flying, it would be more "fair"? I guess. Also, the cars spoiler & down-force will affect their trajectory, eg: if you launch a F1-car, it would probably fly further if it was turned upside-down front-forward while in the air.

The optimum ramp would actually be 45 degrees, but you would have to add a radius to it because a lot of the energy would be absorbed by the cars suspension and you would probably smash the front end of each car that had an approach angle of less than 45 degrees if you didn't.

At 0 all horizontal momentum will be preserved but nothing is turned into vertical so there will be no jump, at 90 nothing will go forwards, and at 45 it will redirect just as much up as forward; but it would be a very brutal redirection wasting a lot of energy deforming. so probably somewhere between 22.5 and 30 would be ideal. At lower speeds with suspensions with a lot of travel (which will store and release energy when slamming into the ramp) a higher angle is probably good, but at higher speed it will start to deform no matter what, which will probably make lower angles better.

Scientifically, the optimal ramp angle should be 45 degrees. The cars who perform well are the ones that hit the ramp so hard they basically bounce off of it. Bouncing off a 20 degree ramp gives them a 40-degree exit angle. The cars that transition more smoothly onto the ramp end up acquiring the ramp's angle as their exit angle, 20 degrees, and don't go as far.

In a physics point of view, The aerodynamics would be fully incorporated within the result only when the car is held in a streamlined configeration. As we can see in this video though, most of the cars flip due to drag and weight imbalance between the front and back. If you could somehow balance the weight, you can get way better results with the F1 and even other cars.

Hi guys, some say that 45 degrees is the best angle and that is correct technically, but there a small problem ,a s the angles of the car get higher more of the bottom surface is reveiled causing more air drag, so in a vacuum environment 45 degrees will be the best but with air resistance its all about what object your using and the aerodynamics of it, along with speed, also with such a ramp with higher angles alot of momentum is lost while suddenly changing the elevation of the road, oh and if your wondering, I am a fun (not very fun) person.

having jumped cars in real life with a mixture of successful landing and suspension/chassis failures, the best way to leave the ground/ramp with as little suspension bounce or car roll/yaw/ unsettled as possible. and definitely dont want anything super stiff in the front or rear. also the faster you can get the wheels off the ground in relationto eachother, , the less likely you will rotate too much nose in or nose up. think of plane taking off and landing. you need a little nose up. but not too much that the front slaps the ground once the rear touches.
