One thing about the "reliability". Toyota said that they tested and revised the b58, sent it back to BMW saying that "its not good enough", and that is when BMW (they have said this on record) learned a lot from toyota about how far they are willing to go to get the engine to be reliable. When they sent it back to toyota, toyota ran it for an effective 1 million miles RPM wise, and it lasted. Toyota was happy. That is why the S58 and the B58 are so different and aren't interchangeable. Then when BMW put the b58 in to everything...they were making headlines for making "the best engine ever made".

@5:15 I have a 2021 3.0 Premium and agree the wind buffeting when windows down is one of the WORST flaws in this car, however, there are some aftermarket deflectors that completely fix this problem. The ones I chose were carbon fiber, attached just over the sideview mirrors. Honestly, you can't even tell they aren't an original part of the car's body and they completely eliminate the noise. You don't even see them when you are looking at the car. I'm surprised Toyota hasn't incorporated the deflector design into their side view mirror design to resolve this issue for good for future buyers.

Carlos, glad to see you back! The wind buffeting can be addressed with aftermarket stick-on parts. You can find several videos on YT. There’s no excuse for Toyota not to have addressed this. The lack of a spare in a sports car: I’ve owned & driven plenty of sports cars w/o spare tires. Servicing: The lack of the necessary parts after calling ahead for service is inexcusable. Owners will have to build into their lexicon to have service verify they have parts on hand. 😎🏁👍

I love my 2021 3.0 GR Supra and have every day for the past six months or so. I appreciate you guys posting this video. I will definitely agree that road trips with the miss turn into a game of tetris with the cargo space but we make it work. In relation to the stock issues for service, one of the service managers here at Toyota in Texas told me that BMW doesn't "release" those parts to Toyota until your Supra is on the lot and set for service. SM then told me for any service, recall, alignment, etc that I should bring it in early on the day of service and *hope* to have it back the next day. Not ideal and certainly don't like the idea of leaving my car for days just for an alignment but it seems unavoidable as an owner who has ToyotaCare.

I’m a semi truck repair tech and the amount of similar technology between this engine and the trucks I work on every day is insane. I love high pressure common rail design of the injector, incredibly efficient and should be used on all cars eventually. Air to water cooler is the same as a EGR cooler which don’t leak as often as you may think, when they do they very rarely lock up an engine or dump excess coolant in intake circuit. Very very interesting, bmw is onto something here with this engine specifically. The only downfall I have seem to come across is most normal or average people will not be able to EFFECTIVELY service or do repairs on this vehicle. But at the same time the price of the vechicle seems that most people would not do there own maintenance or repairs, especially when you compare to C8 vette which was supposed to be (back in 2020 and 2019) the biggest competitor.

Great video, Carlos. While it seems like a dynamically brilliant car, those are some serious caveats for ownership. The hybrid BMW-Toyota nature of the car causing service issues is unacceptable to me. This all should've been addressed by the manufacturer and dealers before launch. They needed to have figured out whether Toyota or BMW dealers would be doing 100% of the service for this car, and been prepared.
@scottanthony34262 жыл бұрын
That sounds like the right solution. As is, this is pathetic, especially given the price point. My guess is that since these are low volume cars, it is not a good ROI for either BMW or Toyota shops to make the extra effort to train and stock the right parts. I doubt Nissan will have that problem when the new 400Z comes out. I've read and watched plenty of reviews of the Supra, but this is the first I've seen of the service issues. For $50-$150, depending on the material Used you, you can get rid of that wind buffeting. Multiple companies make the little inserts that go next to the side of view mirror.

Nice in depth review. I think it’s beautiful and objectively an excellent sports car. But I will die on the hill that Toyota should have developed their own car with a manual transmission option. Would have been a perfect legacy icon to their age of ICE performance cars.

A great car. I don't care that it's a rebranded BMW, and I'm not sure why anyone would see that as a negative. But what I keep coming back to, is the Z. The Supra is slightly more expensive, slightly less powerful, slightly heavier, slightly less cargo space...and no manual right now. It's truly a great car, but in my opinion is just slightly _less_ great than the Z in every way that I care about.

So, besides having a set of aftermarket wheels sitting in your garage in case you get a flat tire. Is there a spare (doughnut) tire we can buy from another car that would fit the Supra wheelbase?

Lago is great. There are so many incompetent moto journalists out there, so Lago is truly a breath of fresh air. I only wish Toyota hadn't bought the running gear from BMW. While I would expect a Toyota inline 6 to last forever, I simply don't have that expectation of something made by BMW. If I were to buy one of these things (which I'm not) I'd probably lease it and give it back after 4 years.

Different car class, they compete on price but one is a 2 seater, no back seat, smaller, lighter, true sports car and the others are 2+2 muscle cars....it's not really apples to apples IMO. They get cross-shopped often though. I'd put this and the new Z in the same class though...

I found that the Pirelli Sottozero (not these v2) were some of the worst winter tires I've had, outside of budget brands in high school. I had them on a 500hp Bilstein suspension Audi A6 and a protuned 480 hp WRX STI. They're firm but grip really suffers (it's mid) and had two issues with sidewall bulges. To my surprise a ton of people on forums also had the same experience. The Michelin Alpin are much better for sporty feel, with decent grip, and the Nokyan Hakkapeliitta R2s were above all else by so far. It was an insane difference, especially in grip! They make more road noise but they're soooo grippy and softer but still give you great handling. The sidewall only gives a little bit, but just enough. I know there's an R3 out now. I literally ran winter rallycross on the Subie on those tires and got amazing times. I drove the Audi on R2s across Canada in December (5000 kms) and it was amazing! Don't waste your money on the Pirelli imo. The Super Sports are amazing. They wear out fast but they're so amazing. I haven't even tried the 4S ones yet. I get mine from dealerships where the customer changes rims on a car and the dealer can't sell the wheels and tires as new anymore. I pay like half the price on the tires like that.
@matte84412 жыл бұрын
I work as a Toyota mechanic in Canada and recently had to road test one because the customer hit a curb. It had cheap Westlake winter tires on it and it did surprisingly ok. It’s weird that the dealers there don’t proper equipment, our dealer has a stash of oil/filters (I actually use that oil for my VW Golf) and alignment tools.

Reliability is an output of routine maintenance being done as specified. Many folks don't follow maintenance schedule, then they get issues. I wouldn't expect toyota dependability out of this but at the same time, the German makes are generally good if you are good about maintenance.
