Toyota's twelth generation Corolla Hybrid gains significant upgrades in its hatch and Touring Sports estate forms. Jonathan Crouch takes a look.
The twelth generation Corolla hatch and Touring Sports estate models have gained many friends for Toyota amongst family hatch customers wanting full-Hybrid power. Now that engine's been significantly improved in both its forms, as has the interior of this 'E210'-series design. If you'd previously dismissed the Japanese brand as an also-ran in the Focus class, it might be time to think again.
Background
Toyota was aiming to enter fresh territory with this 12th generation Corolla back in 2018 at its original launch. For one thing, it needed to make Hybrids more universally acceptable in this segment - that's why there are two of them with this current model, a 1.8 and a 2.0-litre unit, both of the 'self-charging' non-plug-in variety. This Corolla also aimed to change customer perceptions of Toyota in this sector, which tend to centre around expectations of drab interior quality, forgettable looks and boring drive dynamics. This 'E210'-series model turned out to be a huge step forward from its Auris predecessor in all these areas. But that wasn't quite enough to at last make this Japanese maker competitive at the sharp end of this class amongst Focuses and Golfs.
The brand is getting closer though, particularly with the revised Corolla range we look at here, which continues to use the 'TNGA' 'Toyota New Global Architecture' platform and builds on world record sales of more than 50 million Corollas over twelve generations since 1966. There's now a Corolla SUV body style too, but our focus here is on the volume hatch and 'Touring Sports' estate body shapes, now usefully improved with a fifth generation hybrid system and a significant upgrade in interior quality and media tech. Let's take a look.

6:30 you guys should take this review down, re work it and publish again. What you are saying about the transmission is absolute nonsense and has nothing true about it. You are fooling yourself and many who has no idea about these cars . Very wrong and misleading. As mentioned, Toyota hybrids does NOT use cvt with belt transmission!!! It’s not even a cvt at all, it only has a name called eCVT but it is a electronically controlled planetary gear set , no belts, no gears, no clutches, no friction, no heat, no wear. The best possible transaxle in the world. Seriously, think about redaction of your thoughts.

That’s a pretty big mistake to make especially when you consider how bad a reputation the Daf type CVT had. Toyota hasn’t helped it’s case though calling this new transmission eCVT which is ripe for confusion. I agree though this video should be taken down immediately and reworked with the correct information so that people are better informed as to what the transmission on this updated Corolla actually is.

How true well said,i own a corolla hybrid and had an Ioniq previously with a jerky at times and somewhat dim witted DCT ' Got rid too many components to go wrong (valves solenoid's clutch packs ect) the eCVT is superior in its simplicity efficiency & power delivery, people who moan about CVT's just don't understand the Toyota system all cars rev up when you floor them just drive a hybrid normally and the eCVT is super smooth and relaxing to drive.

An excellent and comprehensive review let down by one glaring error - the Toyota Corolla CVT gearbox is NOT belt-driven as was mentioned on a couple of occasions. This is no Daf-type 'box with belts and pulleys but uses a much more sophisticated and technologically advanced planetary gear system.

@@steveallsopp4434 This is precisely why this review needs to be redacted. People think there is a hybrid Corolla with belt-driven CVTs in the UK. You guys are so wrong it just boggles the mind. It can't be a traditional belt-driven CVT because the electric part of the hybrid system is connected through the planetary gear set in the eCVT. Belt-driven CVTs can vary the gear ratio between one input - the engine and one output - the tires. eCVTs, on the other hand, use the electric motor rotation speeds and loads to vary the output rotation speeds. You can obviously have different type of electric motor assistance but that is not what Toyota are doing.

@427the point it that eCVT doesn't use any belt. It's completely different than CVT used by non-hybrid vehicles. It's more like a differential mechanism than any kind of gearbox. Then the review itself is far from being comprehensive...

After test driving both the 1.8L and 2L I can say I’d go for the 2L all day long. It feels genuinely rapid and will be far more relaxed taking on hills and on motorway journeys. 1.8L is great for around town or if you’re a taxi driver

Excellent review it seems that toyota have just refined what is already a great car I still have two years before my toyota Corolla touring sports is due to be replaced and I can't really find any issues with my current Corolla but I like what they have done to upgrade the power train and the new digital displays and not messed around with the looks which I think the estate version is the best looking estate on the market, the civic looks like bits have been clumped onto the car is a bit of an ugly duckling it doesn't have the same elegant sweeping looks of the Corolla

Just ordered the 2023 1.8 GR Sport hatchback in grey. I Test drove the 2L model too and I can honestly say the updated 1.8 will have enough get up and go for most folk. I’m not fan of leather seats so I preferred those on the GR the ones on the Excel which are only half leather. The wheels are far prettier on the GR than the ones on the Excel. In my honest opinion anyway. 🙂

How is the wind noise at higher speed? Is it quieter than in pre-update model? And is it much louder than in Skoda Octavia?
@toninocars
@toninocars 11 ай бұрын
I can’t compare these two side by side , perhaps the Corolla is the same as Octavia as NVH, however in anything else it’s a miles ahead, the hybrid system is the best in the world, the efficiency and dynamics unbeaten and safety it’s on another level. There are no better cars than Toyota hybrids in their class.
@booshallmighty
@booshallmighty 10 ай бұрын
I have driven both. The Octavia is night and day better to drive. The DSG gearbox beyond comparison to the Toyota. The Toyota feels very cheap and drives even cheaper. You can here the gearbox doing its thing , feels like like the automatics from decades ago. The boot space is taken up by the battery so no dog or camping trips. I was wanting to buy one but couldn't because of these things. Looking at buying a golf , focus or A class . I was getting 47mpg from the Toyota so not worth it. May last forever but I have a feeling you wouldn't want it forever

I wanted a Toyota really bad. I test drove this car and while it's not a fun drive I was still willing to overlook that . The boot is too small for a medium to small dog. If you have a dog then he ain't gona like being in this. The dealer reset the trip computer to show me what mpg I was getting. The last customer got 47mpg. I got the same. I obviously wanted to put it through its paces but I quickly realised it doesn't like pace. If you're not into cars and just want a Toyota for reliability and dont have a dog then this would be a good car.

The Corolla is just let down by the fact that it's so small, it's only good for two adults. Adults at the back are going to really struggle on longer journeys, that's beside the engine droning as well. The Civic is just a better and more practical car, and whoever says otherwise, is probably just biased towards Toyota or towards only considering the car as a city car or a small family. The Corolla hatchback is a niche car all because of the limited backseat room, storage space in the boot, and low power. When ch are also the reasons why the Civic is a better far for a larger number of people and use cases.
