I mean, the "look at top 3 with sylvan then dredge" to me says otherwise, since that's a very illegal play. Look at top 3 is a shortcut for sylvan for drawing your card for turn, and then 2 for sylvan, and then putting back 2. you don't get another draw after that.

I expected this to be a blow out for lands, but that was incredibly close through that last game. Despite the Choke and the Glacial Chasm, there were several times when just the right card would have turned the tide. A Force of Will or Surgical Extraction could have completely changed the outcome. Very exciting, right down to the last draws. Great match, guys.

Just resolving the Price of Progress before Glacial Chasm was on the board would have led to a completely different outcome. The window of opportunity was there, but Mengu chose not to use it (I think he gambled for the blowout win). If Mengu had played Price, Carl would have been at 1 life for the rest of the game and it would have been extremely hard to deploy the Glacial Chasm lock from that point, because he could never pay for it.

@@cemperabledelver has no removal for marit lage (besides the occasional brazen borrower in the sideboard), lands is good at controlling small creatures. Another great match, with expert plays by both sides! It was amazing how much hinged on a few key decisions. I wouldn't have understood half so well, or felt half as invested, if not for the work you do to show us both players' hands, and the cutaway commentary explaining the plays. It has to be enormously laborious compared to what other channels are doing, but it's the reason why they can't hold a candle to you for real gameplay. I hope that Cardmarket's management understand that they have the best magic channel on youtube. Congratulations, Carl, and commiserations, Andrea! Perhaps, after the best deck ever series are over, showdowns between current top decks in the various formats? Or past contemporaries, such as the top two decks from a given year.

Yep, looking at the lists, there's almost nothing lands can do game 1. Their best shot seems to be T1 exploration into crop rotation/glacial chasm to try and survive long enough to get a lock or marit lage. Post sideboard they get a stalling option of mox diamond/sphere of resistance, but LotV shuts down their loops and Flash Hulk runs enough basics and fetches that wasteland and ghost quarter can't keep them off mana long enough anyway. And all this is assuming that lands is on the play or flash hulk doesn't have the combo T1.

Our plan is to either do 8 formats, or repeat the last 4 again and then do a best of the beat deck ever series with the winners of each tournament :)

I'm always amazed at Carl's skill with those weird decks, when he plays seriously with a good list, he is a threath. Cloudpost during the Modern Tournament had such weird lines, now its twice in a row lands pulls some creative lines out of trouble. Gg carl, gg

Technically, you may dredge the last card you would draw from Silvan Library, since Dredge allows to choose if drawing or milling.

I have to admit, I'm a big fan of Pauper, and I have a lot of Pauper decks, mainly thanks to inspiration from Cardmarket, and of course, Andrea is a big inspiration too. But this was a great Legacy match.

Yesterday I overslept, but I had nice video to watch with my breakfasat. The final game really had me at the edge. Freedredge Library is such a fun concept. I think I saw a video or 2 on the workshop also maybe I should see some more. Also I love this concept, have you considered taking dead formats such as extended (I loved it) which are pretty much discontinoued (for modern) and do a series on that? Though I doubt it would be popular.
@CardmarketMagic
@CardmarketMagic Ай бұрын
We are trying to come up with 8 formats so that our 9th Best Deck Ever is a competition of all the winners. We have thought of extended but we did a poll and it turns out almost no one knows what it is anymore 😅 the next formats we are doing will likely be vintage, commander pioneer and standard again (but not world championship decks)
@MunetsuguTakeno
@MunetsuguTakeno Ай бұрын
@@CardmarketMagic Yup, that checks out. Honesty I would be surprised if people still knew it, its the second least known format after prismatic imo. Btw someone actually plays pioneer commander or that was supposed to be 2 formats? If its separate I m not too sure if including commander is wise cause the decks werent builded to fight 40 lifes decks and commanders not made to 1v1 on 20 lifes.
@CardmarketMagic
@CardmarketMagic Ай бұрын
@@MunetsuguTakeno it's two separate. And we are trying commander as a test because it's by far the most asked for format for this series, even though we are not thrilled with the idea 😅

@@CardmarketMagic It certainly seems like a challenge. I dont doubt its possible to make 8-16 or CEDH decks. But I think it would be challenging to let EDH face non EDH decks. :) Good luck!

Fun interaction of Sylvan Library and Life from the Loam (or any dredge cards), if you dredge you didn't draw that card so if you dredged 2 of the draws you only have 1 drawn card to pay for or put back and if you dredged for all 3 of the draws you don't put back anything.

Carl could have also done the life from the loam/sylvan interaction differently. Mengu gave him a less than great workaround. Carl can draw for turn, then library will trigger and he may choose to draw 2 additional cards. Instead of drawing the first of the two cards, he can instead dredge 3 cards, return life from the loam from his hand, and then draw his "second" additional card. As Carl is not drawing a card via library's effect when dredging life from the loam, he can choose to return the "second drawn card" to his library. This way he gets his draw for turn AND can return life from the loam to his hand, and not lose 4 life. Additionally, he can choose to apply the dredge in any order such that he can sneakily keep the 1st draw for turn, and also draw the first of 2 cards granted by library, then dredge 3 cards and return life from the loam in lieu of the second additional card, and put back either of the two cards drawn that turn in case he wanted to draw that 1st card next turn during his normal draw for turn. This way he can float a card on the top of the library indefinitely while still dredging to loam.

Heya, love the content Carl. just a small tidbit, when casting mox diamond, you only discard the land as a replacement effect of it entering the battlefield, it's not an additional cost to cast the spell ;) otherwise, beautifully played!
