@MatchuCT3 жыл бұрын
Honey gouramis are very social! After two of my three gouramis passed away, the last male was very sad and went into hiding for a couple of weeks and lost all of his dark belly colors and became very skittish. Once I got him 2 more friends he finally came back out after a couple of days and perked right up! He's making courting displays to the female already and I'm glad to see that he's happier again. They often go to one another and say hi with their little "arms". So I would say for sure get more than just one as it is very beneficial for their mental wellbeing.

Hi! I'm really interested in getting some Honeys, ideally I'd like 2 males as their colours are beautiful, but I'm cautious they're going to fight each other. Have you found this to be the case? I've read it's good to keep a male and female (s) however I'd be scared about them breeding, and the male pestering the females... My real choice is do I get 2 males or 2 females? Thanks!

even though cycled, keep an eye on your nitrates, thats alot to add at once to a new tank😉 you could even add a 1/2 dose of beneficial bacteria to support your cycle from crashing. And be prepared for lots of water changes for a week or two.
@dynestis28753 жыл бұрын
@@calikitkat8429 you don't really need to mind that at all when you're bringing over filters and water from a previous tank because the beneficial bacteria are already established. Besides that the tank is understocked, overfiltered and very heavily planted so I don't share your concerns.

I have 5 (3 male and 2 female) and they are mixed with 4 apistograma's, a ton of corydora's and Rasbora kobatai and it all works out fine. The fact i have several males actually makes them breed sooner. Not even a month in the tank and i got my first nest with over 100 fry :) Excited to help those grow.

I finally found the gold variant at a Big Al's aquarium store not far from where I live. I bought two of them for my 29 gallon community tank. I think I got a male and a female, but it's hard to tell because they are very small (about 1"/2.5 cm counting the tail). They are very peaceful, and don't seem to interact with my two dwarf gouramis or any of the other fishes. They spend most of their time in the plants, but last night they were up in the top of the aquarium. One interesting thing I saw was the two of them swimming around each other in what looked like breeding behaviour. I don't think it was because of their small size (they must be juveniles) and the fact that it happened at the lower mid-level of the aquarium. I'm really looking forward to their getting larger. Incidentally, I keep my aquarium at 21C, and from what I read on the internet, this is not too cool for Honey Gouramis unless you are breeding them.

Very shy at first but after a few days he's been coming out of his shell and he's a very nice, active centerpiece fish who gets along great with the platies and pygmy cories!

I have 1 gold honey and I had 2 wild all in a 20g tank and they got along very well, until the 2 wilds started attacking everything in sight. I don't think they were protecting nests because I'm fairly sure they were all male, but they both seemed to claim opposite corners. I took the wilds out and now even though nobody is attacking him anymore, my gold honey has definitely become very reserved. I'd love to get another gold honey to keep him company but my local Petco hasn't had them in a long time.

I love honey gouramis, I have four and they are beautiful and interesting fish, however, I do think their reputation as a peaceful fish can be a bit misleading as they are capable of being as aggressive as any other gourami. I have a male who lives alone now as he will not tolerate the presence of any other fish. When I introduced him and a female to my densely planted 90 litre tank he pinned the female honey, two (much larger) powder blue gouramis and school of tetras into one corner of the tank and would not let anyone leave it. For a week. I've since made several attempts to put him in community tanks and the aggressive behaviour immediately starts up again, no matter the other fish or order or temperature. My first female honey also tore up the fins of my other two female honeys when I first introduced them in a 50 litre tank. The three females now cohabitate just fine in my largest community tank, but I had to be careful to introduce the aggressive female last to curb her territorial behaviour. Wonderful fish, but beginners should still keep in mind that they are a gourami and capable of bullying.
@natetinsley31192 жыл бұрын
I agree, I just got a honey gourami and he seems chill but the tank mates are plecos and Cory's. My clown pleco is mean af and fights with everyone, same with my female and male betta, night and day, these fish have personality and whenever there are potentially carnivorous tendencies along with aggression it can be bad news, research carefully.

Do not put this fish in anything less than a 20 long. They are explorers, and too trap them is terrible. Watch them before you buy one. They swim a lot, then hide and rest. 10 gallons is cruel!

Careful! A true Honey Gourami is a Trichogaster Chuna…small and peaceful…the one that everyone loves. Some of the “Red” Honey Gourami and “Gold” Honey Gourami are actually Trichogaster Colisa…larger and more aggressive. And sometimes they are Chuna/Colisa hybrids. The buyer may not see the size difference or aggression until they mature. Why hybrids? This is done to introduce more color…but this practice can also impart bigger size and not so nice personality. It’s all about money…higher color means more sales…and sometimes the seller fudges and calls it a Honey Gourami because of the popularity of that fish. If you’re looking for a true Honey Gourami, buy from a reputable dealer who can guarantee that your fish is not a Colisa and not a hybrid.

These fish seem to do better alone or in a group of at least three, better five or more with more females than males. This helps to split up agression.
