could i keep 3 honey gouramis with 1 pearl gourami?
@johnnygee42062 жыл бұрын
Definitely one of my favorite fish in the hobby. Unfortunately, I had the misfortune of buying the world's crankiest Pearl Gourami. I've calmed him down quite a bit, but before I did, he'd give chase to everything in, on, or around his tank. I can't be sure, but I think I've even caught him flipping me the "middle fin" before. I did end up naming him, but it's rated R for language, so I'll keep it to myself.

@@drewzero1I'm not an expert on fish behavior, but I think it was adding more plants to the tank that did the trick. He proclaimed a clump of jungle val as "his", and mellowed out after that. He still acts up a bit at feeding time, but I have a trio of zebra loaches that have had it with him, and give him a quick chase whenever he starts his nincompoopery.

@Paul-li9hq2 жыл бұрын
Pearl Gouramis rock. Adult fish are amazing: colourful and graceful!. The juveniles on sale in shops might look a little disappointing, especially if they are really small - but get them and let them grow on! If your lucky enough to see fish that are a little older, and the male colours and fin extensions are starting... all the better (no need to buy a larger group, to try to get a good male/female ratio). Mature males are very special fish: the colours are impressive... but it's the size of the fin extensions that amaze me. A big tank is best to get the very best out of them. I have kept large groups with multiple males and females. The dominant male is going to be a Jewel! There can be some sparring between rival males: keep at least 3 males so that the alpha doesn't spend his whole time harassing one single male (they're not usually so inclined - the sparring i saw was never really aggressive - more display than affray; but why take the chance) They will always be in my top 10 fish for larger tanks. My dream is a bonkers-huge tank full of them gracefully cruising the upper water layers..., with suitable slowish moving tankmates for the mid and lower water layers (somefhing like zebra danios dashing like maniacs all about the tank just look out of place)

I've kept them in a pair with Neons and a breeding pair of Bristlenose and they actually are absolutely gorgeous - And also, I confirm, very peaceful and mellow-tempered too. Now my trustee shopkeepers is keeping them with Congo Tetras in a planted tank and the result has nothing to envy to the reef tank just in front of them. Unfortunately I have very strong filtration in my tank, thus any kind of Gourami is ruled out, but I'd warmly recommend them to anyone.

@@drewzero1 To be fair, they are just a google search away :P Already the first link when you search them says: "The pearl gourami is not only one of the most attractive gouramis, but also one of the hardiest and easiest to keep", plus you see pictures :D No, I think the issue with them is the fact that when they are being sold as juveniles, when they have no colour and they are dismiss by the buyers. Only when you encounter an experience fish keeper, that tell you...no, no, just wait till they grow...they are given a chance. There are also those that go...I've tried to keep them, they died after two weeks...and they show their thanks, with lots of fish that bully them and strong curent. And after you teach them the proper conditions for Pearl Gourami, as in maybe, a fish that originate from swamps, is not a good idea to be put it on a "treadmill" (strong curent), and no bullies...they go, wow they are amazing and almost in their second year :D

I have a single male called Fangs, in my community tank. He gets along great with everyone, minds his own business unless bloodworms are involved 😆 He has become a very fussy eater though! Anything that involves chewing is out. So no pellets or flakes, but if I crush it into a powder he is quite happy to sit at the top siphoning the food in like a lazy vacuum cleaner. He doesn’t like the other fish swarming around him during feeding if they touch his danglies (feelers) and he’ll quickly dart at them to break the group apart. He is quite a skittish fish and doesn’t like sudden movement and is shy of strangers. I do love him though!

Do you think they can handle 23°C/73,4°F? Some sites say they can handle 22°C/72°F others say they can't go below 25°C/77°F. This video say 75-76°F... I want to get it but I also don't want to change the water temperature for only one fish, so I'm unsure if I should buy it or not
@PrimeTimeAquatics Жыл бұрын
I probably wouldn’t keep them that low. They usually don’t live as long.

Pearl gourami are one of the few fish remaining on the bucket list. Do you think their mouths get big enough to eat CPDs? I bet large groups of pearl gouramis and CPDs in a larger tank (
@PrimeTimeAquatics2 жыл бұрын
If the CPDs are full grown maybe not? Tough to say for sure though.

I’ve got 3 honeys and 2 chocolate gourami in a 75 for about a year. Could I get away adding 1-2 pearls? Heavily planted

Can you keep one in a 20 gallon with Tetras and a Cory ? ?
@PrimeTimeAquatics9 ай бұрын
I like to keep mine in at least a 29 gallon because of their adult size.

Will they work on a 60x40x40 tank ?

If it’s inches - yes. If it’s centimeters that might be too small.

I've actually seen them in Petco from time to time, but a good local fish shop should have them as well.

Most of the LFS around us have them. If they don't I would ask your LFS to bring them in!
