I love Love LOVE my Honey Gouramis. I have a yellow and a reddish orange in two different tanks. They are both with angelfish and so far so good in their heavily planted tanks. Some day I may get more. You are one of my favorite aquatic channels, you do not preach and preach like some. I have purchased from Flip two times, but it was just plants and I did receive excellent service. I actually bought from them because of your recommendation.

Just added 4 Sunset Honey Gouramis to our heavily planted 90gal discus aquascape, which was our first gourami experience, and we are happy we did! I've always stayed away from these fish but they have been peaceful and their yellow color stands out against all the green. They share the tank with a big group of corys, rummynose, harlequins, rams and a few other small groups - all of whom work well together. They were shy at first and as noted in the video, some of the discus were a little nippy with them in the beginning but once that was sorted out, they have all calmed. These little guys occupy our whole tank, top to bottom, and are not picky eaters. They swim around similar to rams and are a lot of fun to watch them explore the whole tank. Very happy with these peaceful fish! Great video, thanks for the info. Water parameters: 83F, pH 7.6, GH3

Thanks for posting this. I didn't know about the colour adaptation before. I have two of the gold variety in a 29 gallon planted aquarium with a light background. My two are considerably lighter than yours. They are also much smaller; about the size of the harlequin rasboras that are also in my aquarium. Interestingly, I have two dwarf gouramis that were there first; these guys are much larger than my honeys. The larger of the two dwarfs occasionally chases the smaller one, but totally ignores the honey gouramis. One other interesting aspect of their colour - when I first got them they were yellow without much other colour. Eventually, the one that grew faster developed a prominent black horizontal stripe, so I now know she's a female.

I'm pulling out the spare tank as the new quarantine and am in the search for a new centre-piece with my harlequin rasboras and cherry barbs. Something really important to note, it looks like the fish you have aren't actually Honey Gourami. Those are Sunset Thick Lipped Gourami. You can tell by the tail. Honey Gourami always have color in their tails, while Thick Lipped Gourami have much clearer tails than their body. From watching the video, I think all of your Gourami have clearer tails. They generally have very similar care requirements, but Thick Lipped Gourami get larger, around 3-4 inches verses the 2 inches that Honey Gourami get, and thus need a bit larger of a tank than Honey Gourami. They can also be a touch more aggressive than Honey Gourami, though they're generally still very peaceful.

Decent amount of planting, driftwood etc, but a lot of open space in the tank too. What do you think, Jason, or others who have kept groups - Do they actually LIKE to be together, or just tolerate it? And if they do like it, would it still make sense to add more when this one has been alone for several years? I could potentially switch to a bigger tank, so don't worry about the stocking levels, I'm asking more about the social / enrichment issues.

Just a word of caution based on my experience with a Honey Gourami. I have a 15 gallon planted tank with neon tetras, kjuli loaches, 3 cherry shrimp and 1 mystery snail. I decided to add 1 male Honey Gourami as a centerpiece based on all the recommendations as a peaceful and "sweet" fish. This is the first time in 30 years of experience with aquariums that I decided to take a fish back to the store. This juvenile honey gourami was super bully with the poor mystery snail, harassing the snail all day (except for when I was feeding the tank that the gourami got distracted eating) and then from one day to the next the honey gourami also hunted down all my cherry shrimp. Only one survived with half of the legs missing and hiding all day below a catappa leaf. I immediately returned the gourami back to the store without even asking for a refund. What a bad experience! And was a nightmare to capture the gourami with all the driftwood and plants I have in my tank. Totally regret getting this fish. Maybe you have better luck!

How would these guys do in a 75gal tank with Australian Rainbow fish/kuhli loach/corydoras?
@pjp93833 жыл бұрын
I've never kept rainbowfish, but my HG is with two schools of corys in a 20g. They keep mostly to the bottom, and she or he keeps mostly to the top, so it works very well!

Hi. Great video about the Honey Gourami. I just added one to my 10 gallon which also has Ember tetras and they get along really well. Any suggestions for which Gourami I could add to my 20 gallon that has 7 Cherry Barbs that are great fish but VERY assertive at feeding time (they always try to steal food from my pleco)? I think a Honey Gourami may end up hiding and not getting enough food. I guess I’m looking for a semi-aggressive Gourami that won’t let the barbs activity (not just at feeding. They’re always active) cause the Gourami to hide. The Pearl Gourami is out since I prefer a larger tank for that sized-Gourami. Thank you.

Honey gourami would be the only one I would add.

How much do you know about Paradise Fish? I have one that I think is female. So far, she's shyer and less active than I expected. I originally planned to keep her with my Giant Danios, but she's clearly afraid of them. Meanwhile, she seems to gets along well with Corydoras (Bronze and Peppered) and Bristlenose Plecos. Any suggestions for tankmates?

They are nice fish. So we’ll in a cool water environment. They tend to behave a lot like bettas in regard to their temperament.

I have 2 honey’s in my 10 gallon community tank. A Male and a female along with 4 neons, 3 cardinals, 2 rumy nose, 4 otocinclus, 2 halfbeaks and 3 shrimp. Never had an issue, the tank is heavily planted and has rock and wood and a floating betta log.

I had 3 thick lipped Gourami which I bought it by mistake (supposed to get T.Chuna), the LFS sold the T. Labiosa as Honey Gourami.. Their bullying is really intense, the bully killed 1 and subsequently struggling from swim bladder (talking about karma) . Water parameters are good, 0 nitrite and ammonia, 1 is flourishing and another struggles. I'm thinking that the LFS had a bad batch and just unlucky enough, I got both of them.
@jaredmiller59283 жыл бұрын
ok but there's the honey gourami (the small yellow one) and the larger sunset thick lip (sold as red honey gourami) with the latter being about 2x larger than the former. A lot of the images in this vid were the latter as well. Both very similar temperament but different fish

I have a question. If I just get 1 Oscar, what size tank? I have read 55 g, but I think that's for more than 1. This one I have seen at Petsmart and looks like hes had a bite taken out of his back. Even that looks fine. They have supposedly put him in the back. But I still have him on my mind...
