Radiation therapists help treat patients with cancer. They have several roles and responsibilities, including:
Explaining treatments plans to patients and answering questions
Ensuring patients and themselves are adequately protected from radiation exposure
Determining the precise location of the area in need of treatment
Calibrating and operating radiation machines
Monitoring and keeping records of patient progress
What is the average salary of a radiation therapist? This data is from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The salaries do not include overtime, bonuses, benefits, signing bonuses, tips, or commissions. In 1999, the Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded $43,360 as the average base salary. By 2019, average base salaries rose to $91,620. Wages grew by $48,260 (or $4,022 yearly) from 1999-2019. The estimated 2020 average base salary would be $91,620, using $4,022 as the average yearly income. If trends were to continue, by 2029, the average base salary would rise to $131,837. Here is how the 2019 base salaries break down by Percentile.
There is a $69,350 difference between the 10th Percentile and the 90th Percentile.
10th Percentile: $59,280 (starting salary estimate)
25th Percentile: $70,170
50th Percentile (Median Salary): $85,560
75th Percentile: $105,830
90th Percentile: $128,630
In 2019, the base salaries of radiation therapists were vastly different, depending on the state. The lowest paying state, Kansas, on average, pays radiation therapists $72,140. The highest paying state, California, on average, pays radiation therapists $119,800. There is a $47,660 difference in average wages between the highest paying and the lowest paying state.
The job market for radiation therapists has grown since 1999. In 1999, there were 12,340 employed radiation therapists. By 2019, this rose to 17,860 employed radiation therapists. From 1999 - 2019, there was a growth of 5,520 employed radiation therapists (276 per year).

Very big on physics. Reduction in radiation beams. Calibration and patient position does have the need for quick math computation. Such as reading at 72.3 cm and needing a 12.6 cm shift right. Does the number move up or down? This on top of talking to patient and other radiation therapist. Its alot to handle.

you can only do radiography if you do a program for it. There is a state licensure for diagnostic radiography and a separate exam for radiation therapy . So unless you go to a school that has radiography built into the program prior completing radiation therapy then you can only work as a radiation therapist . I went through radiography first then chose radiation therapy

I would say Associates, just to save money and start working immediately. A large portion of radiation therapists just have an associates degrees. But, ultimately up to you. Good luck!

I've done the song and dance where you go to college, get the degree, then there are NO JOBS available. Are there jobs in this field, a demand for skilled workers? Or is it another shot in the dark where you get the degree and it's nothing but silence at the end of the application?

I would say there is demand. This is a small, niche occupation (only around 20k employed). With small niche occupations, you have to be open to moving across state lines to find the job opportunities. Unlike say registered nurses, who can find employment pretty much anywhere.

I’ve recently been accepted into the program and the director literally took the time to warn me that finding a job may be difficult and even completing clinicals would be difficult due to Covid and limiting spacing. I would hate to have to move to California from Georgia because the cost of living basically crushes this high salary that you speak of.
