Yes, you read it right. I'd buy this EV. I went into this review thinking the BYD Atto 3 (also known as the BYD Yuan Plus) would be a bit of a stinker, but came out of it at the other end blown away by how much value you get from it. You'd be bonkers to spend another $30k on a base Tesla Model 3.

Just on 3 phase charging. A few people have mentioned that it doesn’t have it, but the importer has assured us it has. Not sure who to believe! So tread with caution. UPDATE 25 July 2023: BYD contacted us with the following statement regarding charging. "BYD ATTO 3, BYD Dolphin and BYD Seal in Australia and New Zealand can achieve single-phase charging power of 7 kW (AC)" "BYD Electric Vehicle models available in Europe are equipped with three-phase charging power of 11kW (AC)"
@HyenaRspec
@HyenaRspec Жыл бұрын
Even if it does have 3 phase there's not much point if the onboard charger maxes out at 7kw - that can be delivered on single phase 32A. Or if it's like the Tesla UMC it may plug into a 3 phase socket but still only draw from a single phase.

I've seen people mention that only one of the three Mennekes AC charging pins are actually connected, therefore definitely single phase - and that's not necessarily a bad thing for the bulk of people.

I'm almost certain that originally they said the Atto 3 was coming with 11kW onboard charger but that appears to be another thing the importer has quietly changed.
@mondotv4216
@mondotv4216 Жыл бұрын
So they've been advertising 3 phase charging all along (checked the wayback machine). By definition a 3 phase AC EV charger is either 11kW or 22kW. Instead they've equipped the Atto 3 with an onboard 7kW single phase charger. Another example of deceptive business practices from EVDirect. Of course a 7kW charger will work with a 3 phase EVSE but that is NOT 3 phase charging. If it was 3 phase 7kW it would be limited to 10amps a phase and would only deliver 2.4kW on a single phase charger.

There’s actually a 3rd top tether point hidden underneath the fabric in the boot if you feel for it. No idea why it effectively needs to be cut out of the fabric but it’s actually there. Only thing missing from the review was mention of the mess of the rollout as far as warranty, servicing and now delivering of cars. But the car itself seems great. Nothing else comes close at this price point for an EV. Parents are picking one up and I was genuinely surprised when I checked it out in person. Prefer my Tesla but it’s good that cheaper EV options are coming. Great review Paul.

You always test the rear camera (9:36) in your reviews, which is great. But while you're there, try reversing into the case to demonstrate rear autonomous braking. One more step, try walking behind the car to test cross-traffic alert. You'll add a lot of useful information for little additional effort.

Nice to have built-in high quality dashcam for example and not have to take the dashboard apart on your new car just to run a wire for a 3rd. party one that would have worse video most likely. You also competently reviewed the driving dynamics on a proper track. I heard other reviewers complain about the weak A/C though. I live in a hot country so that could be an issue over here. Looking forward to a video like this on the MG4 if it has hit AU yet.

Just spent three days with an Atto 3 in Auckland and environs and was mightily impressed when compared to Tesla and Polestar. Was super economical at about 15.4kW per 100km - way better than the Polestar I tried mid last year which struggled to better 23kW/100km. Bang for buck well worth it in NZ where, after clean car rebate, it is only a little over $50k. Can't wait for the BYD Seal to arrive later this year to compare to my BMW 3 series.

It is so weird that they cannot guarantee 10 years. Their battery is excellent and the service makes no sense. There is no need for servicing unless you need to. BYD needs to rethink their strategy. At first I drove it in "Ecco" mode and it was both really lacking in power and the suspension was terrible, it just bounced around all over the place. I then switched it to "Sport" mode and it was a revelation, it became quite powerful and it really firmed up the suspension. I then discovered in settings that I could adjust steering and regen to "Sport" and "High" and it made it even better, a really nice sports car. I was really sorry to give it back.

So just get your moneys worth out of the included tyres, and then replace them with whatever your heart desires when they're due.

NFC is near field communication. You get two standard key fobs, and an NFC card (tap card). If you open by tapping the NFC on the mirror you have 10 mins to push the start button inside, otherwise if you open with key fob, the key fob must be 'in range' inside the cabin for you to push the start button. When the smartphone app is released I believe you'll also be able to tap your phone on the NFC reader instead of the card (to be confirmed). 3 Phase AC? - No I don't think so. The Mennekes Type 2 (AC) plug standard is capable of 3-phase, but I believe in the Atto 3 uses only one of the 3 pins across the middle (there is one for each phase) - the others are blanks. Single phase home charging is perfectly fine for almost everyone - either with a standard 10amp 240v outlet or a 7kW wall adaptor. For long trips go the full DC rapid charging (45 mins to fully charge while you have a lunch break).

It doesn't matter if you have single phase EVSE or 3 phase, it only supplies 240v 7kw max to the on board charger. DC is 400v 80kw controlled by the BMS
@evtorque
@evtorque Жыл бұрын
@@ianmcmullen9088 It makes a pretty big difference if you only have a single phase charging cable. So what would that give you, only one third or around 2 kw with 10 amps per phase? Yet we know we can do 7kw on 1 phase or 32 amps. So, because we don't know for sure, we would have to all buy a heavy 32 x 3 amp cable so we could charge at home on 1 phase ( at 32 amps) yet allow us to draw 3 x 10 amps from a public charger. That's a lot of expense, weight and handling that wont be necessary if it turns out it's only single phase charging. So yes, it matters.
@ianmcmullen9088
@ianmcmullen9088 Жыл бұрын
@@evtorque No, I have a single phase 32amp feed 7kw EVSE. Even if i installed a 3phase 22kw EVSE the charger (which is built-in the car) will only draw the maximum of 7kw. If you want anything faster than that, it must be DC which is controlled by the BMS. Even if you use a use a public 22kw charger (charger is the wrong term with AC supply it's actually a controller or Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment EVSE) the output is single phase and you'll require a CCS/type2 to CCS/type2 cable.

Been trying to get into an electric car for over a year, (Tesla didn't appeal), had a contract since June 22 on a Kona, but they couldn't deliver before the model ran out. Couldn't find anything available before the end of 23 (and no guarantee on date) then found BYD had some surplus stock and got one in 3 weeks, saving quite a few dollars, and have been very happy with it. A lot to learn and arrange re charging etc. but it will keep me satisfied for some time.

Thanks for a thorough review. I ordered the Atto3 the day after the NCAP5 rating in Europe was awarded. I'll be getting a space saver tyre to make up for no spare. The below shelf space will allow the space saver. Just hoping a factory towbar will be happening before manufacture. My delivery ETA is Feb March 23. So assuming ETD factory is Jan Feb 23. Anyone wondering about BYD should look at their history and the 35-40 electric buses already made as well as the huge volume of cars already on the road in other countries.

After thinking about this review, the BYD sounds almost perfect as our second car. Most journeys less than 250k can charge off our 12kw solar system with a timer, not used every day. Then I remembered we keep our cars for around 10 years and nearly every lithium battery we have, has failed around 3 years. The 10kwh battery linked to our solar, the Dyson vacuum, my Makita power tools, our phones and pads. My laptop did however last 8 years. So assuming the warranty is 6 years, and I cannot find the exact details, the second battery will be ready to drop dead around the warranty expires and we will be up for big dollars assuming BYD is still around.

The first thing I did is try the Passenger front seat and found it too high, I'm only 175cm and had to duck my head quite a bit to get in. The drivers seat is height adjustable. The other thing that is questionable is the Warranty, It's all over the shop, the battery, suspension, screen are all different. Cheers Tony

I’ve ordered the extended range model last week. Really liked it. I should be getting it end of march next year. First I was worried about the distributor, servicing and the brand itself. The more research I did the more liked the brand. However not so much about evdirect. Somethings have been improved like the servicing but my main concern is about warranty, it is kinda not making any sense at the moment. I find it very confusing. Once that gets sorted out I’ll go ahead with the order and purchase the car if not I’ll get my deposit back and move on. I have couple of months to see if evdirect improves anything. I’ve test driven it and it feels like a normal car except the humming noise you get at low speeds to warn pedestrians which I found was very loud and intrusive but apparently it’s very easy to turn it off. The test car had 4000+ kms on it and there were no rattles or any other weird noise. The car had a lot of space for its size too! I hope evdirect make their facts clearer so I can go ahead with the order. Also great review!

Personally I'm not a fan of BYD's build quality. On a different note though - wing mirrors - here in Europe we call the mirrors on the door "door mirrors". Wing mirrors to us are mounted out front on the wings. Really old cars had wing mirrors and some Japanese imports.

Charges on DC at almost 90kW as many owners have already proven. The NFC is like Tesla they give a card you can use to open the car with. Real world range is probably in the 360-380km which is over 200miles so a good amount of range for the type of car it is. That is a good efficiency especially as you had highway speeds as well.
