This info is great! We learned with our first doe, it was rough going, lost the 1st entire litter, 2nd had to pull the surviving kits to go to another doe, 3rd litter she figured it out and did amazing! Its hard to not intervene sometimes but I agree, they have to learn and we have to let them 😁

First time does are often clueless when they go into labor. I have a three strikes policy. If they lose more than 50% of the litter three breedings in a row, they go in the freezer.

I love rabbits. My uncle bought us one for Easter when I was about 10. He was huge and white with dark eyes. We named him Peter and he lived in our backyard in a hutch that my dad built. When I was in high school, a lop eared female that had kind of a wild rabbit coloring showed up in our backyard. (Which backed into a field) and Peter got out. They mated and my dad built a bigger hutch with a divider. She had 11 babies and they were all a caramel color. Some had white bellies. I was heartbroken when my mother sold them all to someone. Even the mom and dad. Anyway, 42 years later (and my kids have had pet rabbits over 30 years) we moved to a homestead in Ohio last fall and plan to start raising rabbits in the spring. I just love your videos!

Man, I love your videos. I watch them over and over as I go through the journey of my rabbitry firsts. Thank you so much for all your insight. When I get some extra money I'm gonna send you a donation because you've helped me so much. There are dozens upon dozens of channels that discuss the same info that you touch on but most of them are so very irrational in my opinion that I just can't bring myself to take their advice and apply it. I just had my first litter. Momma was 4.5 months old. All 8 kits were born healthy and are doing great. Momma is doing a great job and I wouldn't know the first thing about what to look for, to be cautious of, to be aware of without your help. I probably would've been too protective or too in the way if I didn't have your direction. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thank you Bobby for all you do ... wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year! I have 3 does that are due on Christmas day. So excited over here in southeastern coastal NC. I started watching your videos before I got my first rabbit. I watched re watched until I felt confident that I could do this. 15 months later we have a freezer full and sold Easter bunnies this year. I appreciate you so much for sharing your knowledge and I look forward to each video. We also have bees and those videos my husband watches. He is the bee keeper. Again I thank you!!!

Hi Bobby, update on our first litters, first litter was of one kit, but that one was a doe, and it was HUGE (Netherland dwarf) from your advice, we kept momma on the breeding cycle, the second litter is 5, just a few days ago. For a Netherland dwarf, five is really fantastic! Anyway, I wanted to thank you for the continued posts and advice. Once our snows go away, we'll be onto meat rabbits 🐇. & we'll be tuning in because we feel you've helped us avoid some pitfalls we wouldn't have otherwise known! Thanks again!

Thanks for all of the valuable information. When holding back kits to be breeders at what age do you start rationing their feed? (16% protien being used) I have not found where you start rationing for breeders vs feeding for growth.

Very thought out video! Do the litter mates have a special bond that you want to keep strong? If so, when is healthy to break it? I heard when a male mates the female there is a bad odor. How to you deal with that?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 2 жыл бұрын
It’s always easier to cage sibling rabbits together. Litter mates will be bonded and social status will be in order so less fighting will occur when caging siblings. I always breed outside so I haven’t noticed an odor and haven’t had to deal with that issue

This is great info at the perfect time! My senior doe just made a nest and gave us the signs she's with kits (honking, protective, stomping) it's too early to check yet but this chirstmas litter we are keen on keeping alive. Blessings for this video! Any suggestions for small time homesteaders and keeping their rabbits watered and fed over holiday vacations (1-3 days away) Besides having someone come over, would you suggest any sort of system or toys that you've found helps feed and water last longer in cages?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 2 жыл бұрын
Lukewarm water tends to last the longest I’ve heard folks try ping pong balls to keep the water moving but doesn’t really seem to work you can staple a piece of plastic in front of your water bowl if you get any sun this will create a greenhouse effect defrosting the bowl/you can always entertain purchasing heat up bottles or bowls too. The pellet shouldn’t get stale in 2-3 days so you’ll be fine there. But your best bet is asking the neighbors or some friends with kids that are eager to help. Best of luck

I just had a doe kindle on Friday, when I went out to check on it, it was clean, had a full belly, but was HUGE, and alone. She did a good job, but since it was all alone, it got too cold. We're giving her a little break, because that kit was almost 4 full ounces, and almost as big as my hand.

Bobby, thanks so much for your assistance & guidance! We’re expecting our first litter next week and we’ve adopted your kindling box design right away. My question is what do you do if there’s a kit attached to the nipple and she goes up the ramp? We didn’t think of this until now and didn’t see any way that the kindling box design allows for access in the tunnel itself so now we have no access if this were to happen. What am I missing? Thanks again hope to hear from you before the day of.😊
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter Жыл бұрын
We have a couple different nesting box designs, as well as a Kindling tote so it's beneficial to watch the video a couple times to make sure you get all the details. Our rabbits have never had a kit latch on leaving the tote. I think this is due to the 6" tile knocking the kit off the nipple before she goes through it. We keep the kits in the kindling tote for two weeks. At that point, we gather up the litter and move them to a 30 x 36" cage with mama. We use a flat nesting box design so the kits can come and go as they please. At 4 weeks old we introduce a small hide box. kzbin.info/www/bejne/np_OYnqKbryfeZI

Domesticated rabbits are built just like wild rabbits which occupy every continent except Antarctica- research shows rabbits stay comfortable into the negatives- Temps as cold is -30 and rex rabbits have a different kind of fur but still comfortable down to -10. It’s important to have a wind block like plastic or straw bales. Use straw to insulate your cages and hides and up the feed portions so your rabbits can burn a few more calories to stay warm here’s a video to help kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6C3p6R4gcmngrc

So when the kits are 3 weeks old, you move them to a nesting box in the main cage? Do you block off access to the tote? How old do they need to be to go in/out of the totes? Do you have issues with heat if the weather is really hot? I was thinking the kits would could out of the tote and into the cage when they were ready/able. Also, what is the angle of the ramp from your cage to the tote?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter Жыл бұрын
We collect the kits at two weeks before they're running around they're very hard to catch when they get a little bigger we inspect our rabbits regularly We need quick access to them that's why we move them- if you don't plan to sell your rabbits then you can let them run free and collect them once you're ready The bottom of our hutch is 40 inches high we use a 10 foot 2 x 6 connected at the bottom of the hutch - a 10 foot allows for an easier climb than 8 foot 2 x 6 Hope that helps

Appreciate the information and the guidance on rabbit husbandry. However, what is annoying is the constant reference to animals with human nomenclature? Animals exist and operate with instinct, not human emotions or reasoning. And within each species, there are unique names for age specific males or females.

My first time momma rabbit had 13 kits today!! I'm concerned she won't be able to nurse that many. I have 2 other litters currently, but one litter the kits are huge and there's too much size difference to foster, and the other litter is already full. For the doe with only 4 kits, but are easily 4x the size of these newer kits (even though they were just born Saturday), if I put the 13 kit nesting box in with the 4 kit mom once a day to try to help supplement what the real 13 kit mom can do, do you think the 4 kit doe would attack them, ignore them, or nurse them? Hoping that made sense?

She could possibly nurse all of them and keep them all alive but if your noticing some kits aren't getting fed you can swap out the big kits for the small kits. You can try putting the mama in the nest with the skinny kits and holding her there until the kits have had a few minutes to nurse. You can also lay mama down and calm her on your lap. massage her and carefully hold the kits over a nipple until the begin to nurse. I'll do a video on this in the future. Best of luck with your giant litters. Heck of a job!

@@TheRabbitryCenter She lost 3 the first night and another the second night. So down to 9. None of them have looked overly full until this morning. Six had nice fat bellies but 3 didn't and 2 even felt cool, but still moving/alive. The larger kits are literally probably 4-5 times the size of the smaller ones now. I went ahead and put the 3 that weren't doing well in with the 4 enormous kits. Hopefully they don't get crushed. I tried the keeping mom in the nest box thing yesterday and today. It seemed to help because 6 had super full bellies this morning which is a huge improvement! But today... Well, we'll see. Thanks for the reply!!

How long do you keep a doe or a buckfor breeding? Do they ever get too old to breed or do you keep them until they expire?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 2 жыл бұрын
After breeding a doe for 2-3 years a doe’s litter numbers will drop from 10 to 2-3 This is when you sell them as pets or let them free range or process them.

Did you by any chance put oats or any other type of food in the feeder? Your rabbit may be trying to get to that. If the problem persists you can always raise the feeder a couple inches

Hey I have a litter of 3 week old rabbits!! They just started jumping out of the nest box and one got out died and I assumed it froze!! So I brought the whole litter and the mom inside. I put them back out today but its supposed to be getting very cold tomorrow and the whole week!! They aren’t covering themselves up with bedding in the nest box. They do know how to get back in the nest box!! I’m just wondering if they will be okay!! I also lined their hutch with straw!!

Quick update and question. Update: we have 4 getting ready to turn 4 weeks tomorrow and they seem to be doing great! We lost 3 the 1st week. 2 it looked like she crushed a few days in. I'm assuming she just didn't realize it being 1st time mom. Another was still attached and got pulled out the night we had a cold snap. I had a piece of cardboard outside the box and some straw just incase this happened and I did find it still alive. Put it back into the cluster but died about 2 hrs later. Idk if I should have took it inside first for a few hrs or if it wouldn't matter at that point. But I've learned so much the past month and over all she has been a super sweet momma besides the Unfortunate situations in the beginning. Question: when do you stop the oats? I'm still giving them to her at both feedings. The Kits are eating on them some but are eating pellets and hay really well already as well. Shes getting her weight and fur back well, but I dont want to over do it, but dont want to stress like a 1st time Dad or something either lol
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter Жыл бұрын
I don’t feed whole oats every feeding but I do feed a punch about three times a week I will continue to do that until she regains her weight or until the kits are 4-5 weeks old. At that point mamas milk factory is about to close up shop and the kits are getting ready to be weaned Regular Pellet Consumption: She receives 2/3 of a cup a day when it’s spring,summer, fall and a 1 cup a day in the winter

So sorry that you have a sick rabbit. Rabbits have allergies too but can also catch viruses. I'd try my best to start with healthy rabbits and maintain with a clean operation but sometimes you can't avoid it. It's best to quarantine sick rabbits so they don't infect the other Rabbits. You can try to give your rabbit some relief with VETRX but if things don't improve I'd get them checked out by a Rabbit vet that way you know if there's a serious problem working it's way through your Rabbitry. I wish you the best with your Rabbits.
