December 23, 2023 and this is still better than 99.5 percent of today's country music. How did we lose our way?

When I read the comments that people write about old country songs like this, I feel like I have returned home after being away too long, and received a round of hugs from all my family. So many of them are long gone now - but that's how you folks make me feel. Thank you and God bless.

What a great classic country song. This was back when country was still country. I thought of this song for some reason a few days ago. I got out my martin, tuned it up and sang this song. It really is the kind of country song that suits my guitar. It is quite easy to play, but a lot of fun. What great lyrics as well. The harmony is also great.

Great traditional C&W song. A true classic. Memories of my late in-laws and wife from Smith County, Mississippi. The Westbrook family, "good folks". My father in-law was a proud retired Army veteran who returned to his country roots upon retirement. My mother in-law had a great collection of vintage C&W music mostly from the 50's thru the 70's. As an old rock-n-roller she introduced me to and made me a fan for life of "classic country". Thanks Dotty Fay. Miss you, Ernest and Darlene.

Pete Drake played tasteful steel guitar to compliment the singer with his melodic tone and gentle phrasing. Not technically as gifted maybe as Emmons or Noel Boggs say, but his playing made hundreds of great records sound greater.

skeeter just made my cry then I searched for other versions and now I'm crying even more. It's not because of the content of the songs but it's by the fact that my father liked this kind of music and we had "Top of the World" sung by the carpenters in the Radio very often when I was young. And it's my the fact that I'll be 44 years this year and times like that will never ever come again. I wish I had a time mashine and travel back to 1976 or 1977

Don't let me cross over Love's cheating line I'm tempted, my darling To steal you away Don't let me cross over Stay out of my way You know that I love you And I'm not the stealing kind But I'm faced with heartaches At love's cheating line Don't let me cross over Love's cheating line You belong to another And can never be mine I know one step closer Would be Heaven divine Don't let me cross over Love's cheating line I've tried to forget you But what else can I do When your eyes keep saying That you love me too I know if I lose you Not a dream will I have left I don't want to cheat, dear But I can't help myself Don't let me cross over Love's cheating line You belong to another And can never be mine I know one step closer Would be Heaven divine Don't let me cross over Love's cheating line
