I was shocked when I first heard Carl's accent. Carl is from Iowa. He is an American, and he is sleeping rough on the streets of London.
How does an American end up homeless in London? Carl was visiting some friends when all kinds of madness happened. He ended spending all the money he had, including funds to pay for travel home. Carl says the U.S. Embassy offered no help. The U.S, Embassy has programs for people who have lost their passport and such, yet there is no assistance for people who are broke and just want to return home.
I find this story very interesting. As we learned in Edwards story [bit.ly/Rm2Der] people from Romania cannot get benefits in the UK. Well, neither can someone from the U.S.. Before you get all upset, we do the same thing. When a person is not a U.S. citizen it's extremely hard to find them support services. Both Carl and Edward cannot get a housing benefit (shelter) nor can they get any welfare assistance. That means they are left to beg to survive. Carl told me that his biggest challenge isn't the cold, it's that most public facilities in the U.K. are pay toilets.
Carl was able to find a refuge charity to help him get a ticket home, but that's going to take a few days, and until then - - he's out sleeping rough in the freezing cold. I am still trying to wrap my mind on an American being classified as a refuge. I mean, it makes perfect sense from an international perspective, but still very surreal.

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as KZbin, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

That's not how it works. He is white and from America therefore not a priority to deport. He also didn't enter the country illegally. There are also a range of options in which you can stay in the UK. From what he was saying he planned on living here, so he could have years left on his visa or even Right to Remain status which mean he is still not a citizen, but is entitled to be here. If that is the case then the UK government won't pay the expense to send him home. The US embassy should be sorting something out for him. That is one of their purposes, so they are obviously incompetent or also don't want the expense of laying for his flights. The charity and voluntary sector in the UK is what primarily keeps the homeless fed and supoorted. The government do very little indeed.

Exactly. Spot on. What kind of an embassy allows its citizens to remain on the street in the cold in a foreign country?? When it can easily....VERY EASILY .....just send him home as you said and have him pay it off. And here the U.S is still boasting how its the greatest country in the world with all its 'freedom and democracy' bullshit. This video and many like it.....is a reminder that 'freedom and democracy' doesnt mean anything. So you can talk and express your opinion in that country.....wow.....big deal. Is that really so important when when it comes to 'saving your life'......that country is probably the last to do it. It took a 'charity' organisation to help him buy a ticket home. This could’ve been me I almost moved to England for a guy a while back with the promise that we would get married and I would get citizen ship there and be able to work . It’s likely that he moved there with someone giving him the promise of helping him get settled wether it was a friend or someone. When I broke up with the guy I Almost still went because I had the ticket still and some family members were saying I should just give it a try. But I listened to my cousins advice who was very well off there and is from there and she told me straight up without citizenship in the UK you can do nothing , you can’t even get an apartment. And if you do It’ll be like an illegal apartment and that’s how people try to take advantage of you because they know you have nothing else . In the US you can live for years with money and a good life without citizenship . Job , apartment, everything . It’s just not the same in the UK .

As an American living abroad, I think it’s hilarious/infuriating how Americans living abroad have to pay income tax to the USA, which the USA justifies because of “services” they ostensibly provide, but then when Americans abroad actually need assistance, the USA absolves itself of any responsibility, and all of the helping-citizens-in-distress services are actually provided by volunteers (!) called “wards”. It’s shameful.

It's only paid if someone makes over 107K per year, and then, it's only a small percentage for maintaining one of the most valuable citizenships on the planet.
@tookitogo
@tookitogo Жыл бұрын
@@jaekn It’s way more complex than that. For example, unemployment benefits are not exempt. And even if you don’t _owe_ you still have to _file_ - and that often means finding a tax consultant who knows both local AND US tax law, and that doesn’t come cheap. Trust me, the whole thing is a big PITA and a big “f you” to citizens abroad. And none of the similarly valuable citizenships punish their diaspora in that way. Now that the Philippines has stopped citizenship-based taxation, the only other country in the entire world that taxes its citizens is Eritrea. So “we provide value” is no argument, when countries with more valuable passports don’t do that to their citizens.

I was an overseas student in England from 1997-2003. As an overseas student I had absolutely no recourse to public funds (social benefits) and had to be 100% self-funding. With no family, that meant getting up at 6 AM, attending 5 hour lectures, doing assignment research and then washing dishes for 5 pounds an hour until 1 AM. By that time, the buses had stopped running and I was forced to take a taxi home. I did that for 6 years; I was 45 years old when I began my British education. There were no food banks available in those days, and nothing for non-citizens.

The question NOT asked: how did you get here? If that response of " depending on other people for support " was the answer, it was beyond vague. As a kid I once got stranded a few hundred miles from home. I was too embarrassed and ashamed to call my family to come and get me and the idea of sleeping out in the middle of strange territory either never occurred to me or was too frightening to think about. When I finally got to within 75 miles of home, it was after 1 am and I didn't think Trailways wanted a kid to sleep in their station so I finally called my folks.

He's lying through his teeth. I was a naive backpacker and ended up broke in Cambodia, because of my own doing. I went to the embassy and told them. They scolded me, which is kind of part of what they are supposed to do. They set me up with a hotel, and some money for food. They are supposed to call your relatives in the states and ask on your behalf if they can spot you the cash, if they determine that your relatives are unable to support you, they will buy you a ticket and fly you home. Which is exactly what they did for me. They made sure I had food and shelter until my flight, and I went home. I felt stupid, and a little broken, now I know the USA is far from perfect, but I am happy that I come from a country that does this for their citizens. The caveat is you have to eventually pay them back for the plane ticket.. But they were pretty adamant when they said to me, that they "never leave an American citizen destitute overseas". I asked the guy who worked with me how frequently this happens and he said "you are the fourth one today".... So yeah, this guy is full of shit. And by the way, the video was posted in 2012 which is the same year I had this issue.

trust me there was no threat to me in Cambodia. The only threat was my pride if I had not gone to the embassy and admitted that I goofed up. I've traveled and lived in many many countries since then. I am currently an expat living in Paris. I had drinks with my friend who works for the Department of State and has had assignments at many embassies around the world. He confirmed word for word what I just said. This guy would not be left homeless in London, Paris, Cambodia or elsewhere. So either my mate at the Department of State is lying, or this guy is. Wow! How can you say this without proof of what the guy who makes the videos actually does for the homeless & people he interviews? I know for sure he has made these videos in the USA and the UK, at his expense.... to open the eyes of those who are unaware of the situation of homeless people world wide, showing the viewers it is not just junkies or alcoholics, etc. He has actually taken his own time to portray this to us and I know through these videos (if you took the time to research before assuming) he has filmed a homeless lady in her 60's, a remarkable lady who's story touched many people therefore a director made a short film of her which is on you tube, eventually this lady was given housing and many people raised money on go fund me to furnish her house. So before you state he is indifferent, what have you done to help the homeless? since you are on here and quick to judge Saul you too Nada Ghani & Mary Lai, did you invite a homeless person to dinner or offer food or even a hotel for the night when you crossed the path of someone crying out to you? Yes well I gathered you didn't! Please do not JUDGE prior to doing research..You are all Ignorant and narrow minded to say the least!!!!!

@@aliwalker7667 I do agreed part of your comments that Mark did a good job that to bring the awareness of homelessness ! Because of his awesome works that most peoples understand and know better about the situation of homelessness peoples. I have no ideas about what is homelessness until I saw his video , it was a great shock to me !!! I did try my best to do the contribution by donating to some peoples and charity organisations and go for street feeding. And I wish in the future , i could do more for those unfortunate peoples within my means. I think most of the peoples here were caring peoples that they show their empathy on the homelessness , I believed they were doing the same as what I'm trying to do now.

I noticed that the cameraman asked where he was going to sleep tonight yet didn’t even consider the fact that he had a residence in the area. Anybody without the fortitude of character to pull someone out of the cold for a night doesn’t have the necessary character to cover homeless problems as a journalist.
