We all have a projection of self that wants to be in control, but it's a actually a delusion. All freedom of mind comes from this understanding. So the answer is not to fight against the state or collectivist ideologies, which only land you in the oppositional mass movement politics. But as Nietzsche and Jung would both recommend, abandon politics altogether and just IGNORE the state and mass marketing. Search for your own enlightenment, develop your own work ethic and sense of self. Fill your own purpose in your personal life and become what you are meant to be... Mass politics can not be fought with other mass politics. Just take a pass on the entire mess and instead of mourning for the modern world, live in your world which will be amazing with enough hard work, self awareness and growth.

I could go on a long excursion elaborating on the reasons for this, but in summary they were historical, political and commercial rather than substantive or philosophical. The behaviourists, rat-torturers and blank-slatists were simply seen to have more utility in the Cold War environment, by State and corporate interests alike. But it is their ideas which have been readily debunked, their experimental methods and outcomes exposed and falsified. Jung has not, however, gone away. The most inventive artists in popular media (Kubrick, Bowie, Lynch to name but three) are Jungian to the core, consciously and avowedly so, and the phenomenon of Jordan Peterson, who only hints at his Jungian substrate, demonstrates a psychic need bubbling underneath. If this century is to be saved, I am convinced it must be Jung's century.

The text at 7:30 basically sums up the problem I have felt since childhood. I'm one of those people who had always trouble on becoming "a social unit". To make matter worse, the social environment where the pressure came from was below my individual proclivities (in other words, I had to lower my standards and decrease my interests and activities, in order to "belong" more). When you're not born in powerful positions, or raised to be someone who fully exerts his potential, you're forced into the slave-mentality subculture, and forced to see your own value as only a part of "the bigger picture". It is mostly a matter of being able to psychologically project your self worth onto the "large organization" (the State, the corporation you work for, your church, etc.). I somewhat lack this ability.

Since Carl Jung's time the nation "State" has evolved into more of a corporation and the individual is an economic cog. Individual meaning, or "success", is measured in money and material possessions that signify your sacrifice and importance to the corporation as a whole. It's an ingenious way to keep your labor motivated, but eventually it will fail because of the very reasons Dr. Jung states here.

Peterson is a confused man. Jung would never tell someone how they should or shouldn't feel, but Peterson has become popular by telling people that their feelings are wrong. One of the important things he confuses (something this video also confused) is the conflation of the State with "public" government. It's a naive understanding of the State to separate it out from private interests and power. You cannot have an analysis of the State without including the extent to which public law is determined by the interests of business. This is why Max Weber said that "bureaucracy"--that which shapes our lives like nothing in history--is more than public offices, but also includes private "offices." By the State, Jung meant something much broader and deeper than "government" as it is ordinarily understood.

The sermon on the Mount is about the fact that the law was outside of us, prescribing what to do, while really doing and being good comes forth from the heart. Jesus thought there that the law should be inscribed in our hearts. It is a shift in ethics. What we need to fullfill the laws, according to Jesus, is love. Something we do not get on ourselves, alone. Peterson is preaching a way to redemption through a new law, something we can do: sort yourself out. Jesus is full on against this.Peterson has christian elements, but no christian philosophy nor psychology. I advise Henry Cloud, Paul C Vitz and Richard Winter (l'abri library) on this subject.

Really really profound stuff. I've learned that the way we think about ourselves, our ego, is what creates suffering. Any feeling, thought, or event that threatens who or what we think we are causes repression and hence an increase in the size of our shadow, which leads to acting out and suffering. I've wondered for a while, what possesses people to become so passionate about religion, or a political movement. Slowly, I've found moving in those directions for meaning and purpose made me feel hopeless, and guilty, because I wasn't interested. You need to make friends with yourself first, get to know yourself and the rest will happen naturally I believe. The second thing to focus on, as far as I can see, is improving the relationships with your loved ones. It has given my life a great deal of meaning, joy and purpose and has benefited all of us. It's made it easier to have relationships outside too which has helped my career. I wish my local library had some of his writings, I'm going to contact my book loving friend and try to get something.

Great video. I think the optimized group is one consisting of highly individualized people working towards a common goal. Without a common group oriented goal a person is destined to become hyper-individualized up to a point of excessive selfishness and psychopathic behavior. The dialectic between collective and individual, for me is reflected in the differences in right and left brain. We must optimize both.

Even biblically it talks about how the church is the body of Christ (the church as in the people not the building), but each individual is a member of the body (e.g. Like an arm or eye) and it's up to you to perform your part in the body for the common good. But also we are responsible for others in the body, as the body is only as strong as the weakest member. And the ultimate goal is to grow into the fullness of Christ.

Holy shit, wow. What a time to find the Academy of Ideas & then what a time to find this video! At a time of mass protest & rioting, how relevant & mind blowing this video is right now. The revolting action of an individual to another is the true problem, but due to a prevelant weakness of our conscious minds, we allow ourselves to get engulfed into a subcosncious understanding & create the us & them. Everything is easier in a collective due to the great energy produced & for our own energy to be engulfed in the flow most fitting to our consciousness. Is it also easier to attack a group as an attack on an individual means you must know & understand them? Also to know & understand someone else you also take on the action of better knowing & understanding onself, thus making an individual attack as an individual can also feel as an attack on onself if you happen to find a common interest? Removal of the individual allows you to attack just a segment of oneself & thus can be alienated or easily or actually feels to be a self improvement practice. Oh my, there is so much depth & layers to all this which can be used to put a thiught process/explanation to actions of groups. Ending this comment here as there ia too mich in my mind. Jung's diagnosis of the crisis in modern man's soul is more strikingly accurate than ever before. We have allowed ourselves to become ever more identified with the demands of the machine and mechanised, anti-human, left brain, thinking. There are clear historical antecedents for this trend, going back hundreds of years - possibly thousands. I can do no better than recommend reading 'In the Shadow of the Machine', by Jeremy Naydler. You'll never see history in the same way again. And copious amounts of Jung, needless to say!

Jung seems to be assuming that medieval man was more at peace with his existence, and seems to be looking at the past through a set of rose colored glasses. How do we know the psychological state of a peasant living in past centuries? Medieval societies fought senseless wars, committed many atrocities, an in place of mass divisions of labor, relied on slaves or serf servitude. We have very little idea about the sorts of existential crisis the typical medieval man or woman faced. The insights into the inner workings of the human ego Jung describes are very profound, but isn't suggesting these inner workings are some sort of new development or are somehow linked to modern technology fallacious?

Humans have never been "individuals" though, not historically. We're successful because we can work together and cooperate in groups. So although this analysis of the human condition post religion and industrialisation offers some interesting insights - restlessness and angst, the desire for fame and power - the conclusions regarding the rise of, and dangers of totalitarian government seem like a bit of a leap. The desire to belong, to find meaning and purpose beyond our narrow selves makes sense and should not be discouraged per se. To follow Jung's advice, opening hidden doors into the self and all the inward looking self help psychology of the last 50 years is surely only half the picture. We're not going to be happy or fulfilled as people until we can unite the personal and the social.

If someone is a true individual, such as living in isolation, how are you going to know whether they're successful or not? Especially since it's up to the individual to define 'success'. 😉 Historically, it's the individuals who steer society and the masses. Think of people like Napoleon and Einstein and the differences they made. The overwhelming majority will be the supporters of these great figures, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

People will create “Gods” out of anything that transcends in any form. Add to that a bit of structure and hierarchy and could be something that lasts for many years. Religion as we know represents a crowdsourced collection of stories of how to navigate this world together as a group and alone as individuals simultaneously. Difference between other forma modern “Gods” and old ones is the new ones are more technical, they give the rules but do little for the individual. Facebook is a God, Capitalism is a God. They are unbalanced yet. Very developed on the logic part, while the emotional lags way behind.

Wow! I now understand why churches have always deterred me from studying Jung. For he as well as the others exposes their control over people by use of spiritual longing for answers to life. The delusion of religion can be such an overwhelming force against good mental health, and I have found, place people as I was in a prison of mental instability .
