This is the full and uncut version of Carl Lewis's U.S. National Anthem performance during an NBA game between the Chicago Bulls & the New Jersey Nets on January 27th, 1993. It was originally uploaded by "KesselMania", but the account was terminated a while ago, but fortunately, this video was archived and I've managed to download and reupload it as is. So, instead of watching an ESPN or any sports or news cut of his screw up, now you get the opportunity to watch his whole performance from him getting ready, the part where he fails, "makes up for it," and the ending.

It actually was not a terrible rendition until the “red glare.” But what made this rendition so hilarious was Carl responding to his voice cracking with “uh oh” and “I’ll make up for it now.” Some renditions, such as Roseanne Barr’s and Fergie’s, were simply horrible. This was both bad and hilarious.

Carl Lewis has a huge ego. Righteously so, he’s one of the fastest people on our planet and a stellar athlete. However, his manager is to blame for allowing him to take the gig. He has a good voice, but obviously this is out of his range. Singing in a lower key he would have more power. Why wasn’t he rehearsed is a good question.

I'm guessing it was rehearsed, but who knows. The nerves of singing in front of people can make it tough to hit high notes in particular. You're right though. Huge ego, but understandable. In his mind he has to always live up to everyone's expectations of him wherever he goes. And some people get over the top with those expectations to be larger than life. Totally get it. Definitely not the right performance to worry about your ego and it showed. Overall ok for me. Slightly disrespectful yet oddly sincere despite the prevalent ego. C- and most deductions are for making it about himself and not the mistakes.

The secret to singing the national anthem, seriously you can try this right now: start at the lowest note you can possible hit (like do a Louis Armstrong impression).. and then the rest will sound good. Because the first "Oh.. " in "Oh say can you see" is the lowest the song will ever go. So if you start off casually at a comfortable mid tone, like Carl Lewis does here, you're gonna be screwed later.
