oh yes Carl...THE biggest "enemy" of my days in the 70s having a band or group, was the total lack of reliability of other band "members"...not showing up for practice, or whatever...in the end i more or less gave it up on those grounds.....the actuall "music" (BIG topic..)..was often (sadly) only a thing on the side.....sooo many egos in music......but hey...here we are...:-) cheers.

Bravo, Maestro! Once more you've done the Music Community a very great service. Bravo! As compared with those who merely have to say something, you, sir, clearly have something to say. For my own clarity and to better internalize your insights, let me rephrase some points in more familiar terms... (A.) "Great Training" equates to acquisition of the "specialized knowledge" particular to one's chosen field. It's literally crucial. (B.) "Commitments" are to be kept or not made at all. As like goes to like, those good for their word soon leave behind those who are not. This is simply by virtue of who they've become. (C.) "Come Fully Prepared" is like showing up on time, dressed for work, work boots on, toolbox full, knowing both your job and how to do it well. Now you're playing with the Big Kids. That said, don't be a "Bottle Baby." If you rely on a chemical crutch, you are a weak link in the chain and need to fix that. As sung by Paul McCartney, "Stand on your feet. You won't get far if you keep on sticking your hands in the 'medicine jar.'" (D.) By knowing more than my part in the arrangement, I'll make my part fit that much better. This touches on taking up only the "sonic real estate" I need and leaving "elbow room" for everyone else to play. (Three Note Thumb Chords are good friends.) If "The Song Is The Thing" then if it doesn't serve the song, something's wrong. (E.) Getting the call says they have to fill a spot and thought of you. They may be under the gun timewise and have to go with whoever gets back to them first. Be that person. As the saying goes, "You snooze, you lose." (F.) Getting there early is simply smart. Duane Allman was well known for getting to session gigs an hour early (outwardly) to put on and break in a new set of strings, the mark of a pro. (G.) Be a Joy to have around or "easy to work with." No one plays so well that they can afford to be a burden on people. No matter how good we may get, some Humility will always serve us. Whatever you put out comes back to you, so help others shine. Call it "enlightened self-interest" if you want but do it. (H.) You are playing music in the Real World. Stuff is going to happen. Roll with it or stay home with the little kids. (I.) People want to FEEL something outside of their norm, usually something more elevated in some way. Your job is not to merely "recite" the music but to share how it feels with them so they can feel it too. They're hungry for that. If you don't feel it, they certainly won't, and they'll know YOU don't either. To be boring is possibly the worst of social sins. (J.) Eye Contact... The audience has eyes as well as ears. That's obvious yet somehow still needs to be said. Maintain eye contact with the other members of the band too because any player who doesn't could be replaced by a machine... or another player who's more "with it." (I.) Playing music is a SOCIAL activity. As Musicians, we have a special role to perform. Show yourself you take your role seriously. Dressing for it is part of our job... and as professionals our stage threads are Tax Deductible. Again, Thank You... Each one of your points could possibly be a topic all on its own.

Cool video. I am a retired bus driver. I love playing. I rejected formal music training when I was 8 years old. I was in the 7th grade when I heard Led Zeppelin II. I had never heard anything like it. I have played guitar and bass with some groups/not professionally. I love guitars and playing. I could never be a professional musician. Cool channel.

Carl this is beautiful and everything I subscribe to... Dependability is one of my biggest pet peeves.. I don't drive due to poor vision ... That has never stopped me from getting to band practice, A recording session or a gig. I used to work a 10 hour day then take 3 busses to band practice in Garfield Hts. Eat on the bus.. get to practice,, Get home by midnight. Then get up at 3 am to catch 2 busses just to get to work by 5:30 am every morning and doit all over again. The other thing I think is important is visualizing the gig and/or recording session. I would literally visualize and playout every moment in my mind a week in advance of the gig.. Self mental conditioning is a very huge key for me. Anyone who is a musician or aspires to be one should see this video... Great work and sage advice.. Thank you , Again!

All important and insightful points. Thank you, sir, for bringing these tips and reminders to us! The most challenging one for me, as I came up in live music performance, was to connect with and engage the audience. I was so focused on my playing that I realized I wasn't entertaining as well. This made me appear uncomfortable on stage, and probably aloof, which no performer should put across. As soon as I started making random eye contact with people in the audience and moving around more to show that I was enjoying being up there for them, I felt more relaxed and happy, and had more fun playing! It takes so little, and creates an enjoyable experience for both the performer and the crowd 😁

When I was at Berklee, I heard that the difference between an amateur and professional musician was that a pro will play whether he wants to or not whereas the amateur only plays when it suits him.

@blueheron52322 жыл бұрын
No one "makes" the time for anything. We don't make time; it is given to us, and we all get 24 hours every day. The truth seems that one either "sets aside" time for something or one does not. In that case, one may be conflicted but that, sir, is an entirely separate topic.
@fritzb.39782 жыл бұрын

I was just wondering about this subject, too! .... I was also a professional actor and I would say that most or everything you said applies to the acting profession as well. e.g. ..... An actor will just "switch on" when its time too.
