Laughing is actually a really common reaction for people who have gone through extreme amounts of pain. It's a kind of expression of hopelessness and tragedy that the person doesn't want to express through crying, either because of who they're in front of or because of how tired your body is of crying and feeling sad. Happiness and sadness aren't actually opposite emotions, crying and laughing are both intense reactions to intense emotions and it only takes a comparatively small hormone shift to go from happy to sad as opposed to sadness to indifference.

The opening scene with Eren telling himself to fight in the mirror really makes me think that Eren hates what he is doing, but believes it to be necessary and thus works hard to convince himself to go through with it. That's what this "tatakau, tatakau" feels like to me. If that's the case it would also explain why he doesn't want to talk with anyone. He might be afraid they could talk him out of it, if he allows them to speak with him for long. In the manga they were careful to never show Mikasa's exposed wrist. In the anime they messed up once, when they came to the ocean, where you clearly seee her wrist and that there was no brand there in that episode. I would not be surprised if Historia chose her "husband" either at random or deliberately because she felt nothing for him. She knows that her children will one day have to eat her (once she ate Zeke - or any titan really - first) and then each other... I wouldn't want to expose anyone to such a fate, much less someone I actually loved.

The scene with Hange and Eren was mistranslated unfortunately. It wasn't too far off, but the phrasing changes the tone dramatically. The way the subs make it sound, is like Eren's challenging Hange, but the way he's actually speaking to Hange (despite the tone of his voice) is like him pleading with her for an answer other than the one he's going with. Eren is, in that moment, basically begging her, almost like somebody saying, "Please, if you have some other way, some other solution, something that wouldn't lead to more people dying or going with what I'm doing now, you need to tell me or else I'll have to carry on with this one." That isn't literally what he said, but I was hoping that explaining it like that would help with processing what he was pretty much asking her. Something I wanna add to this, is that we tend to only see titan transformations when somebody'a been injured in some way. Eren, obviously, isn't injured or bleeding when he's getting so worked up, but we see lightning starting to erupt from him. Looking back on it, I wonder if that's meant to indicate the amount of pain Eren is in emotionally, and like a subtle way of adding to why he's so angrily pleading with Hange for another way forward.
@Tyrantofthewind2 жыл бұрын
It literally makes no difference given his actual ACTIONS are more a threat to Hange than his subtle threat in this episode. Moreover, Eren is the actual reason things are progressing as they are, his line about Hange having a solution he doesn't at this point is meaningless since his attack on Liberio has already given Hange zero good options. Moreover, I think you give Eren more credit than he deserves. He has always been a rage monster, and the lightning scene is merely showing you that part of him is still there.

SPOILERS FOR THE MANGA BELOW: SPOILERS FOR THE MANGA BELOW:SPOILERS FOR THE MANGA BELOW: Eren's rage comes from an inability to realize his desire of freedom - the most important thing to him that underlies ALL his motivations including his belief in a world before he learned humanity was still outside the wall (his actual main motivation) and protecting his friends - because of his knowledge of both the obstacles in the way of his idea of "freedom" and later certainty that he cannot achieve it. Moreover, his realization that he cannot escape his own desires, which largely fuel the path before him. @@Tyrantofthewind I've read both your comments and I think that sums up a part of eren's character. So the plan that was presented was: they would test a partial rumbling as a deterrent to keep the world away while they improve their military capabilities, and Historia would have to bear children who would have to eat each other every 13 years - she would eat Zeke, then a child of hers would have to eat her, then her children and their descendants would have to eat each other to keep their control over the Founding (most won't even reach adulthood). That's the gravity of how terrible the position Historia is in, she's literally being caused to raise her children for the slaughter just like livestock. She rescues and supports orphans, but now, both she and her own children would be sacrificed. Eren would have nothing of that. For him, he must save the girl who saved him from getting eaten back then even when he was already willing to accept that demise..

this was mentioned in the episode but in case u didn't fully comprehend it, they didn't turn historia into a breeder, her getting pregnant was her own decision, in fact because of what she did she ruined the military's plans because they were planning on turning her into a titan and making her eat zeke as soon as he got to the island but now they can't do that anymore because of her pregnancy.

A common theme in this show is having characters get inches away from their goal only to end up getting taken out or unhappy. Erwin is stopped inches away from the finish line. Historia just wanted to live for herself with Ymir. But now the girl who loved her the most is gone, she's pregnant in some grand scheme, and she looks more unhappy than ever. The girl who wants to live for herself is being forced into another role. Japan language difference time. It seems like Eren is simply yelling and getting aggressive with Hange. However, despite his actions, he's actually using really respectful honorifics. He calls Hange, "Hange-San" which shows he still respects their position of power, and he's speaking in a more formal way people in Japan usually use to address their superiors. Which paints the scene in a whole new way if you're familiar with Japanese. Eren isn't getting aggressive because he's unhinged or anything. He seems to be genuinely pleading with Hange to show him another way. Of course, that doesn't justify lifting Hange by the collar and choking them against the bars, that's just wrong. We saw back in Season 1 that Hange used to be angry all the time at the titans, but used curiosity to cope with all the pain and loss. Hiding feelings behind a smile. Over the course of the seasons, we've seen that smile less and less. And now as Commander, the most emotionals we've seen have been sad or frustrated constantly. Poor Hange. Even more sad is Eren and Hange. Seeing how their friendship started off and where it is now. Hange has some big shoes to fill. And the weight of Erwin's legacy is a mighty burden to bear. Side note, the anime actually changed Mikasa's symbol in Season 1. Some people theorized that it's because Japan doesn't like showing children with markings so they censored it. There are a lot of moments from Season 1 that were changed or cut out, which unfortunately takes away the foreshadowing when said moment actually becomes important.

He laughed at Sasha's last words and how typical they were (as did Carlie btw) and the tragic tendency of him not being able to protect the people he cares about. They do show it get to him for a brief second afterwards though. The connection to the Hannes incident was a good callback.

I read Eren laughing the same way. He was laughing at that memory of Sasha stealing the meat, in the same spirit we all could share a laugh with friends at a funeral reminiscing about old times with our lost one. But Connie doesn't know what Eren is thinking about in that moment, and they're all thrown for a loop with Eren suddenly deciding to cooperate with Zeke after years of refusing and wanting to find another way.

true about the laugh. he was reminded of the time Hanes got eaten. With all that power now he still once again can not prevent another death of one of his beloved friends.
@imshubhajit2 жыл бұрын
That's the same laugh as he did when he saw Hannes die. What Eren's trying to express here without expressing is that - he tried so much still couldn't save the ones he love/care about. It's a coping mechanism for him.

Conny got it wrong when sasha died for Eren 's"laughing', Eren is crying and "laugh". Remember ep2x12, Hannes die in front of him, Eren laugh crying as well. People try so hard to change something but failed, you might laugh crying to yourself. Eren is not "laughing", he just laugh to himself and being guilty for what he did.

Connie doesn't know Eren as much as Mikasa. When Hannes died, Eren laughed. He felt angry and sad, he didn't know how to react so he just laughed, not because it was funny, but as a nervous reaction. Same with Sasha, he laughed. He also felt anger and sadness... But Connie doesn't understand Eren 😔

“Because you’re important to me, more than anyone else” one of my favorite lines from Eren that shows you exactly who he is and why he does what he does. Same with Hannes... He laughed because he know with all the power he had, his friend still died... Also remember that he had future memories... Maybe he already know she would died, but he still can't do anything about it... He laughed at his helpless self...

He laughed because of what much of a joke life can be. How such a beautiful soul can be taken away,like it's some grand comedy,like some cruel joke. When you've lost alot in life,and experienced tons and tons of trauma..its a common response. That's why he laughed,I did the same when my pup died this march..because I felt like this had to be a joke,some sick joke. I was in sheer disbelief but at the same time,expected because of how shitty my life has been as a whole. I assume,he felt the same. Once you're out of tears and anger,all you have left is laughter with tears..laughing at the cruel comedy that life can be.

one way to interpret Eren's laugh when Sasha died is how ironic and funny (in a dark way) it is that he STILL can't do anything, the people he loves keep dying and he still can't help them also there MIGHT be a deeper meaning, but you will understand this in later episodes probably, you're still not supposed to get these weird moments!

I don't understand people who say or react like Eren is wrong and Eren is kind of getting a villian. Watching own mom is being eaten by titan being able to do nothing, hundreds of own friends are getting eaten by titans, losing a lot of people he loves and respects, and it is what Eren goes through just till Maria walls recovered. After that he sees Kruger and father's memories he feel their pain and sees what they have seen before, how his nation is treated like slaves in Marley. Worst thing I realized was Marleyans make eldians kill their own nation and using eldians like living shields in the wars against other countries. For me Eren is not doing something wrong he is just who Marleyans have made. I agree with killing whole world is horrible but I got so much satisfaction when Eren attacked Marley. so I do understand him absolutely.

I don't agree w/Eren's ways but I understand him completely. It's easy to say what's right or wrong but it's really different once you're put in a difficult and unfortunate situation. Honestly, the whole story about the Eldians is quite tragic. Their lives are unfortunate and forever stained because their King was a greedy shitty man. But then Marley is doing the exact same thing🤷♀️ every1 is blinded by the power that the titans hold. They condemn eldians for being able to turn into titans yet at the same time seek that power🤷♀️ The world would be a better place (fictional or real) if it was ruled or managed by a bunch of Armins, Falcos, Hanges.. unfortunately, a lot of those in power are usually a bunch of those primitive old geezers having a pissing contest. P.S. thanks Ange for noticing but yes, Isayama sensei has created the characters to be consistent from the very beginning 🤗

Because he was watching, because of him, the father figure Hernes, who saved him, would die in front of his eyes and people like his friend for example Sasha, and even after doing so much training, he could not save them even he could not stop his emotion and he could not understand whether he laughed or wept and that's why he punched the titan and activated the power of founder

About Mikasa's tattoo, you actually see her getting the tattoo in the earlier chapters of the manga. I think it's chapter 6? It's the scene when we're introduced to her parents, they're killed, mikasa's kidnapped and eren rescues her. In the scene with the parents, in the manga, Mikasa gets the tattoo, and her mother tells her to pass it down to her children, when the human traffickers arrive. in the anime, due to Japan's issues with tattoos, they changed that scene into Mikasa learning embroidery from her mother, and her mother teaches her how to sew their family crest instead. So the tattoo thing wasn't something the author suddenly came up with out of nowhere.

Eren is literally asking the leader of the scouts if there is somehow another way or solution to this giant problem. But 90% of the people who watch that scene take it as " man gets physical against woman" and hate on eren for it. If it was erwin standing there and he did the same thing it'd be taken as a cry for help from eren. Also the way japanese language is structured he is basically begging her for another solution to this.

Eren laughted because he remembered that moment with Sasha, "Sasha was herself until the end, a lovable goofball obsessed with food", he laughts because of love and sadness. Hanes death struck him in a similar way, but then there was a lot more frustration involved. His backlash against Hange is because he hated Zeke's plan, but all this time no one has come up with a viable solution, so that's why he is screaming at Hange, she as a commander hasn't come up with a plan, Armin hasn't come up with a plan (oh yeeh...I wonder how could have come up with a plan, maybe someone not among them anymore). The only plan avaliable is one he hates, one that threatens Historia and her friends. Obviously Eren doesn't want to risk their lives, but he couldn't escape without their help from Marley, there where risk, and they payed the highest price for it.

Manga ending spoilers: I love how they basically said it would have been out of character for Eren not care about his friends. They already understand Eren's character better than all the ending haters who said he should have killed them... The only way I could see Eren killing them is AOE, after several timelines of not being able to achieve freedom from the loop.
@masterchief41362 жыл бұрын
That's the only part I don't like about the alternative ending, I mean based on the power of the founding titan he should have been able to literally, make them go back to the island if not all at least mikasa and armin. Him killing them is stupid in my opinion for an AOE ending

@@masterchief4136 ? No. The theory states that mikasa is keeping Eren in a loop and he has to kill her to free himself from it. They have to be the sacrifices that the new Eldian empire will be built on. Also knowing Isayama we'll still end up with some 100 years later civil war cos humans are bitches and it makes sense but Eren has to kill them to be free.

we all know conny's not the smartest... it's simply face value to him, seeing eren "laugh" upon hearing sasha's death. to me though, it was a hysterical laughter... one that shows incredulity. he must be in so much pain that he can't believe it, and at the same time, the memory that popped in his head then was sasha stealing meat which was supposed to be a happy memory. he was extremely emotional in that moment which is very rare for eren in s4 so to say that that's a proof that eren doesn't care about his friends anymore is just shallow to me. also, i especially love this conversation with hanje here. eren was extremely frustrated with hanje. imagine, hanje can afford to joke. i truly love that about hanje but seeing it from eren's POV in that moment... must be frustrating and angering. eren, in his ability to escape, did wait for a plan from hanje. he asked her and still, nothing. do note, 4 years have already passed since the marleyan warriors were in paradis. hence, after her convo with eren, hanje's seen her vulnerable state which hanje rarely shows too - saying that erwin made a mistake of making her a commander. i still love them all and i'm hurt for this lack of solidarity. i agree with ange that eren's so-called selfishness is coming from a selfless core. i believe that.
