Nah. He is good, but nowhere near the top ten guitarists of that era. He is a solid guitarist and excellent back-up singer with strong stage presence and excellent tone. But his lead guitar playing is pretty average.

Carlos started playing professionaly in 1974. By then he had 9 years of experience and it shows. This was 1983. He shows the same speed Randy had on Laughing gas. His strength is that he priorizes quality and variation over technique, so his solos on records are never boring.

Carlos would be my first choice for lead guitarist for my band if he was available and willing to. His tone is just so unique and his skills are awesome. He is truly underrated. @@_vixen_4504 I got air Norton and tone zone in my main guitar which is a Jackson USA soloist that I worked my ass off for… 5000$ guitar (custom shop USA Jackson) was extremely relieved to see it in pristine condition when it got shipped to my house. It was a massive double barrel shotgun shot to my bank account when I moved out my house I bought that guitar in my early 20s. Basically had to spend as little money as I could in the time span on getting to being able to buy it… and also have a nice amount of money left over for other things. It’s my main and favorite ax I own. It’s sharper than a razor

@@-Thunder When Ozzy went on his own, the band was Him, Legendary guitarist Randy Rhoads (from quiet riot originally) Bassist Rob Daisly, Drummer Lee Kerslake. Incredible band. All were fantastic I enjoyed all the musicians. Great musicians

OK, so it's not "great" by today's standard of Mixolydian scales with a Diatonic genus. But back in '83 this was top notch. Guitarists got standing ovations for just hammering-on/pulling-off for 20 seconds. Plus he was having fun, as was the audience, and he gets extra points for having the same overbite as Eddie Van Halen.

Different era. Everyone was too busy still in the pentatonic so it was easy being more of rounded guitar player. Back when it wasn't a sport but it was acceptable to be no slouch either.

Back then his main job was to emulate Randy Rhodes. But as time passed he cultivated his own unique style of playing. Today in 2022, 39 years later, Carlos is 100-Xs better than he's ever been. Just watch how he plays now on tour with RATT. He's never been better. And most epic shredders lose our shit as we age, but he has only gotten better. Total respect.

He’s rated where he should be somewhere around the mid fifties or so. He can obviously play but brings nothing new or outstanding to the table. Maybe fifties is too high, maybe a little lower but not much.

I saw one of their last shows in a small club in OC, just before Carlos got picked up by Quiet Riot for the Metal Health LP. Thought it was a shame QR didn't let him unleash his true talent on that release.

For the record, Carlos is RR's cousin. RR if anything was primary influence to Carlos' playing style before both made it big. Also, I saw Quiet Riot in around 83 in Toronto. At that time I had already seen a bunch of bands and witnessed TONS of live guitar solos. I wasnt even a QR fan but this guys solo stood out as one of the best at the time.

The flying fingers can be a decision to enhance the stagecraft. He's plenty fast and accurate with this technique, so maybe no need to tighten it up? I'm classically schooled with the focus on the close technique, but when gigging it can be good for the audience if they can detect something happening too, so I'll provide more motion for them to see...a conscious decision. Im just offering an uncommon viewpoint.

Randy’s death left a frustrating void. I felt the loss personally the guy was my idol. So We wanted Randy back. Could anybody fill those shoes and revigorize the direction Randy was taking metal? The shorter answer. No. Jake E Lee had zero commonality with Rhoads style. How ‘bout this new guy in Quiet Riot with a similar haircut? Can he carry the Randy torch forward? Of course not. No disrespect to Jake or Carlos. They kept it going and played like themselves and especially years on I salute them both. Brad Gillis too. But it was sooo frustrating losing Randy Rhoads! Ugh!

Losing Randy to Ozzy was huge for QR, but with Carlos, they bit back hard. Unfortunate to have lost Kevin at a young age. I think these guys were right up there with ACDC, Scorpions ... all of them.
