May 31st, 2014. Wisaksil Wangek aka "Srisaket Sor Rungvisai" makes the 2nd defense of his WBC World Super Flyweight Title against undefeated Carlos Principe" Cuadras, who’s fighting in his 1st World Title bout.
Prefight records; Cuadras 29(24)-0, Rungvisai 27(25)-3-1.
In May 2013, Rungvisai stops Yota Sato in the 8th round to become the WBC World Super Flyweight Champion. He made his 1st and only successful defense 6 months later, stopping Hirofumi Mukai in 9 rounds.
His 2nd defense is set to be against the unbeaten Cuadras.
Going into the fight, Rungvisai had notable wins over Yota Sato and Jose Salgado while Cuadras had beaten meaningful oppositions in Victor Zaleta and Ronald Barrera.
The fight was exciting from the opening bell, with lots of action from both fighters; Cuadras displaying his sharp boxing skills against the rugged, hard punching Rungvisai who incessantly applies pressure and able to land his fair share of shots while taking many himself. Overall, Cuadras was evidently more effective.
However, the fight did not make it to the late rounds as a clash of heads early in the 8th round halted the fight and Nady ruled it an intentional headbutt. Nady paused the action and called for an inspection by the ringside physician who ruled Cuadras unfit to continue thus the fight went to the cards.
With that, as Cuadras was slightly ahead he became the new WBC Super Flyweight Champion with scores of 77-75, 77-74 & 73-78. Only one judge, Dick Flaherty had Rungvisai ahead at the time of the stoppage. Earlier in the fight, Rungvisai had already landed several headbutts which he was cautioned for and deducted a point in the 5th.
In September 2016, Carlos Cuadras was beaten for the 1st time and relieved of his WBC Super Flyweight Title when he lost to then undefeated No. 1 P4P Fighter in the World Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez via a close UD. It was the 7th defense of his WBC Crown.
He had successfully retained his title 6 times previously, against oppositions such as Richie Mepranum, Luis Concepcion & Jose Salgado.
In March 2017, Rungvisai scored a shocking upset win over P4P King Roman Gonzalez; handing him his 1st loss with a controversial MD. With that victory, he began his 2nd reign as the WBC World Super Flyweight Championship.
Rungvisai was criticized for his excessive use of headbutts and many were of the opinion that Chocolatito did enough to retain his title. Rungvisai was deducted only 1 point in spite of his excessive headbutts.
However, Rungvisai would once again shock the world by knocking out Gonzalez in the 4th round 6 months later in a rematch in his 1st title defense. Although Gonzalez was evidently underprepared, but there was no denying that Rungvisai had proven he was a force to be reckoned with.
He’s slated to make his 2nd title defense against Juan Franciso Estrada on January 24th!
