The Julius Baer Generation Cup is the 7th of 9 events on the $1.6 million 2022 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour and takes place on chess24 from September 18-25. The 16-player field will be cut in half by the 4-day round-robin Prelims. The total prize fund is $150,000, with $750 for a win and $250 for a draw in the Prelims. The quarterfinals and semi-finals are 1-day, 4-game matches, while the final will feature two such matches over two days.
The players have 15 minutes for all their moves, plus a 10-second increment starting from move 1. In the Prelims there are 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. If a tiebreak is required the players will play two 5+3 games and then, if needed, a single Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website: chess24.com/tour

Ever since discovering his games years ago, Ivanchuk has become my favorite player to watch. In this age of engines and memorization, he seems to be one of the only great players to often play in a way that is interesting to himself as opposed to just striving for engine accuracy. He is also fascinating in that he is capable of beating the best players or losing to mediocre players depending on his mood. Not many players are such a wild card and genuine threat across the spectrum like he is. I hope the other masters enjoy getting to play such an interesting player.

Magnus might be the strongest player currently alive due to strong prep and memorization, also thanks to the power of computer analysis, but he doesn't hold a candle to Fischer's brilliance and creativity. Chessmetrics (which is less inflationary than Elo) also puts Fischer's peak at 2895, quite a bit ahead of Magnus's peak FIDE of 2882.

at 17:49 (instead rook to f2) and 17:53 (instead rook to g2) knight to e4 and f5 respectively creates a fork that picks up the queen -more missed opportunities. Ivanchuk could have even won the game. Magnus realized that after both missed opportunities and immediately played Queen to c7. What a lucky draw for him. Chucky had him 2 times in the end. A rook a knight and the king could have easily delivered checkmate to the black king while gobbling up the pawn along the way.

Not sure whether this should win the prize for most convoluted castling by hand or most convoluted way of transposing into a modern benoni.

17:40 "I believe Vasyl was enjoying this position very much. If you find a fortress against Magnus, you'll sleep very well tonight, Sir!" 🤧😂🤷 The g4 pawn watching the entire sequence flashing right in front of its eyes be like bruh wtf these 5 clowns doing, dancing left and right till move 100+, me tired already, when can I go home and sleep 💀😭 Jokes aside, chuky just casually let Magnus promote a queen and confidently draw it off using rook and a knight! Wow what a game, I believe it's the most oddly satisfying highest level draw ever!!! It's a win for Ivanchuk for me! And it's rapid, not even classical, to be able to pull this impenetrable fortress against one of the all time's great (well, Chucky himself is one of the all time's great for me 🤷)!!! Rooting for Ivanchuk and Hans here, even though they're probably the underdogs of the tournament 🤧

It was indeed the 50 move rule that ended it. Or an incredible coincidence, but move 122 being the 50th move exactly would be crazier than dear Chucky himself
