Occasionally someone is so at the top of their game that they look head and shoulders better than any other competitor. I remember how awesome Ed Moses was in the 400m hurdles, and Federer was like that for a while. Magnus has always been great but his performance this past 12 months is just incredible - pity the great players who have to meet him at the moment.

I don't get why Giri moved his queen away from the king side where it needed to defend. I am nowehre near GM rank but it just seemed intuitively a bad choice. But to be fair Magnus moving his queen to a8 was a hard to spot and amazing move.

It's pretty easy to see a lot of things in hindsight. Giri was worried that the queen would keep getting attacked by the pawns and minors on the kingside.

His position was already very hard to play. Carlsen had a huge kingside attack coming. Giri's queen would come under attack very quickly if he moved it to f3. Look at how active all of Magnus pieces are compared to the underdeveloped rooks of Giri.. Totally hopeless position.

yeah - super analysis! you say 23 moves bug Giri crippled himself on move 5-ish (i think) with nfd2. Oh well....

@JediNxf7 nah.... the commentator himself touched on this. The other knight could have got there just as fast. the other knight (and bishop, incidentally) was doing nothing where as that knight already had a job - even if it was not great. When you analyse world class chess I notice them doing the basics VERY well - they do not win becasue they analysed to a depth of 25 moves but you only managed a depth of 5 moves. I think Giri messed up on the basics.....

I think the Sicilian has a bad fame in the chess world, like a being an inferior defence but I think it's actually the best defence after 1. e4, certainly more dynamic than the French or the Caro Kann, obviously better than the Modern and certainly more solid and challenging than the King's pawn. d4 and c4 the moves of World Champions.
