A lot of people have misconcepti9ns about doubled pawns. Theyre only weak/bad if you needed a pawn on a certain square that it is not on anymore, if you can't defend one of them without weakening a color complex/your king significantly, or if theyre isolated. The structure after hxg5 is perfectly fine. Magnus was just upset because if white didnt have Ng5 then Magnus was much better due to how weak a2 is. But Ng5 freed white up significantly and gave him activity

That pawn on g5 (later g4) was actually quite strong, as it paralyzed white's kingside. Carlsen messed up in the endgame by giving up the e6 pawn in order to free the rook and bring the pawn to b2, but it got stuck there, so he had to trade it for white's d-pawn later.

I am confused. It was Magnus’s turn. Couldn’t he have forced a tie? If he uses his rook then I put king in check. Wouldn’t that force a tie or at least lose the white pawn? I am sure I am just missing something but I would love to see exactly why Magnus thought he was certain to lose this game.

Kh6, Kg7. No more rook checks(would take 2 moves) and the pawn moves up to shield the white king. The black king is cut off.

@@fsflip3111 the black king is boxed out by the white rook and cannot help, the black rook will have no way to prevent the pawn from queening when the white king corners it (or the black rook must be sacrificed and then it's a king and rook vs a king, easily winning for white).

I love the cringe theatrics chess players do because they know they're on video. Sure, it's a really mentally challenging game. No, you are not such a high level tortured genius that you can't greet your opponent or even acknowledge them. No, you don't need to put your head in your hands to signal to everyone that you're 'thinking really hard'. Magnus is NOT bad for the sport, but wow so cringe and such a diva.
