Most complicated and interesting game i have seen this year.Variations were equally dangerous for both colors.Both colors were on the edge.It's a fun game to analyse,and you Sir,as usual,did it elegantly. Love from Bangladesh.

My first thought seeing the game was that Carlsen has actually come up with quite a nifty move order trick against MVL. MVL likes to meet the English Attack with either 6... e5 or 6... Ng4, so by playing 6. Bg5 white rules out both of those options and forces black into a Scheveningen setup. It's quite curious to me that Carlsen quickly found himself with some difficulties when one takes into account that MVL didn't even really try to punish white's move order, but instead opted for a line that could also arise through a 6. Be3 or 6. f3 move order that no one seems to go for as black (maybe this is just a move order thing - black players know that white can get in g4 earlier so they take no efforts to prevent it and try to transpose). What do you think Daniel? I know you're a Najdorf player who prefers Boleslavsky structures both against the English Attack and in the Najdorf more broadly, would you feel like you've been tricked here?

I don't think MVL would feel he had been 'move-ordered' here. The strategy he employed was hardly very original - it didn't need to be, as it was simply strong! ...h5 was a very pragmatic choice which worked well. Carlsen's opening wasn't a great success, although it did result in a very interesting game. Often that is enough for him to win...

I think this game shows a strong side to Maxime Vachier-Lagrave's specialization in sharp openings that can easily go wrong. He was better off playing this kind of game than he would have been going in for a slow technical grind as Black against Magnus Carlsen. And we were better off too.

6:29 If white responds to h4 with Bg5, how does black hold onto the h-pawn? Or does he ignore the pawn and continue with a queenside attack?

I think that ...Nxe4 and black is better, if you take the knight with pawn you lose the dark square bishop and black is just up a pawn, with h4 and the dark square bishop black i think is better here, and if you try to take knight with knight then you will just rake back ...Bxe4 and it is even worse as now the dark square bishop is under attack and there is bishop queen and rook pointing right at c2, so you will have to go fxe4 and again black takes the dark square bishop Bxg5 and will be dominant on the dark squares.

Nxe4 is a nice shot that I missed. It's crucial that it can be followed up with Nxc3+ or else black would just be losing material.
