This should clear up the questions. The man on the left is Magnus Carlsen, the current world champion. The man on the right is Alexander Morozevich, *the winner of this game.* The reason Alexander won is because Magnus resigned the game -due to an inevitable checkmate.- About the move that *Magnus* does at 5:32/5:34, there is chess rule called "en passant" which makes that move completely legal and nobody cheated. Edit: turns out I wrong about the inevitable checkmate, *Magnus actually resigned due to having a losing position.* Also, please ignore the replies/other comments that say Magnus resigned due to time, and the ones that say it was draw agreement. When you pay attention to the clock, you'll notice that the players get 2 seconds back after each move, which gives time for players to make moves in the final seconds. Hope this helps

People who don't know the rules, the capture Magnus did at @5:33 is called 'En Passant' . This is when you capture your opponent's pawn as if it had moved just 1 square. Remember it's only applicable when a player plays a pawn move 2 squares beside the pawn of the opponent.

Since nobody's trying to explain this... (Short answer: black won) At the end of the game, if Black's rook in the center of the board takes White's pawn next to the king, it's checkmate, black wins. Carlsen (playing White) knows this and knows he's screwed. He's looking to find a way to use his queen to put Black in check over and over again, where Black can't get out. We call this "perpetual check". This would force a draw, because even though Black is one move away from winning, he can't PLAY that move if he's always in check. The game finally ends because after Black moves his king over into the corner, White can't put him in check anymore. This means he has no way to stop Black from checkmating him. Both Carlsen (White) and Morozevich (Black) know this and they know that Morozevich won, so Carlsen shakes Morozevich's hand to admit defeat.

I'm a Japanese who just started playing chess recently. My poor English and ignorant beginner, but I have a question. I understand that if the black rook takes the a5 pawn at the end of the game, it's checkmate, but why didn't the white side take the knight with the queen? Why didn't you move the queen to a6 again? It's true that the queen was taken, but I don't think it was checkmate. sorry for the ignorant question

Morozevich pretty much retired from (competitive at least) chess later on, but he went on to become a decent Go player. go figure (no pun intended). I always find it interesting when elite chess players take up another board game. Ivanchuk started playing checkers and got pretty good too - nowhere near the world elite level, but he attained expert strength, I believe (putting himself in the top 1% probably, as far as casual players are considered).

OOOOOHHHHH I don’t know why it didn’t click until now, I thought all his pieces there was genius and couldn’t figure out why he wouldn’t kill the pawn with his rook to checkmate and win, but you can’t do that if you’re in check yourself. So as soon as he was “safe” he knew it was over
