Thanks, Keith! MSC Direct has fixed handles listed on their website. A bit pricey but save on a couple of hours work. That being said, making a handle for it would be a good video for everyone watching!

Nice drill presses Keith, especially the Carlton. You may have tried this before, but water soluble cutting oil works great too. I use it all the time for drilling, just fill a plastic water bottle with it and poke a small hole in the lid. Instant, cheap, squeeze bottle for coolant as you're drilling. You can shoot the coolant exactly where you need it and make a small puddle of it in the bottom of the hole, works especially with the big drills. I do admit the oil you're using does cut better...anyway, thanks for the great videos, I've learned so much!

I like the fact that on the Cincinnati Bickford one handle undoes the locking bolts and is used to raise and lower the head & table instead of having different sizes for each.

Seeing the radial drill brought back memories of watching a couple of these in production at Rockwell's Transmission and Axle plant in Detroit just before it was closed in the early 70's. The guys that used them were a pleasure to watch as thet drilled and tapped various holes in axle housings.

A toolroom I worked in back in the early 90's had an Asquith 6ft Radial arm. It's still to this day one of the best machine tools I've ever used. It was fitted with a deadman micro switch next to the spindle....which was a real pain because the swarth would regularly trigger it and stop the machine dead. But looking back it was an absolutely essential feature. The thought of getting your overalls caught up in the drill is to horrific to contemplate.
@keithrose6931 Жыл бұрын
Spent years on that Asquith radial in the 70s as a marker out /driller in the days when we had engineers in the uk . No dead man switch then or safely boots or ear defender's. Its why I suffer from tinnitus now .

The power feed on the Bickford is supposed to lock in like the Carlton. It's been 17 years+ since i worked on one but the feed assembly is pretty simple. If i remember correctly the handles push the center shaft in and two spring loaded balls drop into notches to hold it engaged. A ramp or cam push the shaft out when the preset depth is reached.
@sthenzel7 жыл бұрын
I don´t know anything about this drill press, but I had the idea the feed mechanism might stay engaged only while under load. You could start drilling and leave the machine alone, once it pushes through it disengages the feed by itself. Would be quite useful in production, the operator could have his hands free to apply cutting oil or so.

The auto feed mechanism on the Carlton is possibly to blame for the numerous drill holes in the platform. It allows the operator to walk away from the machine while in operation. The C-B does not have this shortcoming. Great job as usual, Keith.

Keith - drilling with that 1 9/16" drill according to chart speeds - I'm pretty sure the machine would recommend 'industrial' settings to get the job done - and that would obviously assume flood coolant ! At 11 thou per rev, that's ONLY 5·5 thou per cutting surface - a fairly light cut ! Maybe reduce feed when the lights go dim :))))))))
@erlingweiseth27747 жыл бұрын
You should have some position device on the Carlton. To get the drill in the exact position where You want it, and pick up the layout lines and punches. A 10X magnifying lens with light and crosshairs, for the jobs that require those tiny tolerances. I was thinking, Lipton style..;) Great restoring work, and a nice video showing the capacity of such dinosaurs. I would polish up that quill on the Cincinnati, though...;)

Hi Keith the Cincinnati dril press feed should stay engaged by itself, brilliant machine I have drilled many a thousands of holes with one a lot of 2” holes never once let me down.
@tbernardi0017 жыл бұрын
Like the shop placement of the Carlton. You could back a truck up and swing the arm out over and start drilling You might need to put some jack stands under the truck to keep the suspension from flexing, but you wouldn't have to unload big and heavy pieces. Also, I'm guessing the cowhorns on the Cincinnati stay engaged when running and disengage when off to avoid a mishap.

Nice drills, but you might want to switch to a water based coolant in a squirt bottle for better cooling. Even with the light feed you were getting blue areas on your chips. If you chips are reaching that color your cutting edge isn't going to last long with HSS bits.

Nice machines, nice restorations. If you can’t find a commercial handle, why not make one using one of your lathes? If you don’t have a ball & radius turning tool it will require some file work, but good project and that’s why you have a shop. Darn, maybe making a ball & radius turner is another project to add to the project list. Thanks for making the video.

Hi Keith, very beautiful job you did on the restoration on these machines! I would love to have an early drill press to restore. Beautiful machines. That Carlton machine is a beast and it is amazingly useful with all the adjustments it has. To put that large bit though like that without any hint of slowing down it must have a STOUT gearbox and motor on it. What sort of HP does it have? Also the motor on the Cincinnatti Bickford machine looks to be very large in size! Two great machines. Thanks for taking care of these machines and sharing your work with us!
@VintageMachinery7 жыл бұрын
I think that both of the machines are rated at 3HP
@davida1hiwaaynet7 жыл бұрын
Excellent. An Honest to Goodness 3 HP induction motor with that level of gear reduction will drill darn near anything! I see your sponsor American Rotary converters on the video. I take it these are 3-phase motors and you have your converter located in another part of the building where we can't hear it?

Great video Keith, like you I think that the Bickford auto feed needs repaired it doesn't make sense that you would have to hold it engaged. Had the same problem on my Bridgeport until I fixed it. Again thanks for all the great videos. As far as the handle goes seems to me that about an hour of labor and one of your nice lathes should take care of that. I to have had to make a many of those handles but you get a little practice at free hand work which I'm sure your familiar with. Good subject for another video. Thanks again for the videos.

Keith, if nobody can come up with one of those solid handles for the Carlton, Mr. Fenner in Cape Cod likely can turn you a handle to the profile needed using his lathe's tracer setup. That Carlton drill press is slick! I can already imagine some of the things you can now do with it. Granted, its not quite as good as having a full-size horizontal boring mill, but for what you're probably going to be doing, its more than enough! ^^ The Bickford ain't half-bad either! I've been wondering for a time just how big a drill press would have to be take those massive drill bits we've seen you, Mr. Booth, and Mr. Fenner load up in the lathe tailstock for hogging out huge holes, and I'm not surprised the drill presses designed for them are equally as huge and heavy duty! ^^
@charliebryson12857 жыл бұрын
Keith look forward to your video's. I notice how much smoke is created by your drilling, a friend of mine uses bacon grease that his wife saves for him, it works great plus it almost makes you hungry when you have a lot of drilling to do.
