Good vids Carlton. USD 2500 per month is waaay more than I'm spending. I live really well in Laureles Medellin in a 2 bdrm high rise with a 24 hr. doorman and a fabulous view. If I see anything I want I buy it. No skimping.I still save money for those trips we all like. You must be living exceptionally well.
@CarltonsTravelAdventures5 жыл бұрын
Wzup Nolan. I would love to talk over drinks one day. My lease expires 6/30 and I am looking for options. I agree you can definitely live on less than the $2,500 but I always seem to have things pop up every month. Most are optional. If you take a trip almost every month they do add up. I also noted various ways I could really cut into that $2,500 but I don't really need to since it is already in my original budget. I can easily cup T Mobile, entertainment, Sura for $200, etc. And remember if you budget high and put that money away then make $X on your investments every month then you are really not spending the $2,500 out of pocket. The reason I like bonds. Income. Hit me up at: carlostravelblog@gmail.com or c.lee2@hotmail.com

How did you find an apartment? Airbnb is expensive
@CarltonsTravelAdventures5 жыл бұрын
You probably know that I do not like Airbnb, but a lot of my friends use it in Medellin and said it is not expensive. I just went around the barrio I liked and take down numbers from the for rent signs and try to find a unit being rented by the actual owner, then you can negotiate. I pay 3 months up front and gave them a $300 usd deposit for the util and cable.

It is clear that the level of expenses corresponds to a middle class family in Colombia, living in one of the large cities. could increase the value of their income, living in an intermediate city. what would allow you to invest in business or real estate, but lose connection with the quality of life offered by a modern city with many facilities such as Medellin. Today in the US it would be impossible to live on $ 2,500 without the help of the government and at least with two jobs, to survive on the poverty line. reality that every day increases in the USA. In Colombia you can live with dignity with an income of 1500 dollars, if the dollar maintains its strength and inflation remains at the levels of the last ten years. an advice as Colombian for all those who are of the bubble generation and are now going to enjoy their pension through social security and want to move to Colombia for the power of the dollar. Invest in real estate and do not be afraid to integrate socially. Because you can live in a paradise, but living alone is hell. The big difference between American and Latin culture ... is that you live and enjoy isolation and we Latinos live to integrate. go to the disco, learn to dance, teach English, learn Spanish, go to the villages. everyone is different!! In Colombia they do not charge for being happy.

Take you time and make sure you are ready. It can be difficult for some people who really like being close to family. I am not really a family guy. I can live anywhere in the world. I visited for 3 years before I moved. Actually I had a great job as a banker. If my boss did not piss me off last April I would probably still be working and stressing out. I just needed a push. And remember you don't need the $2,500 a month. You can do this on less than $2,000 a month. I actually have a good friend who stayed for a month and spent only $800. $300 in an Air BNB and managed to make the month on the other $500. That's without health insurance, etc but it can be done.

My personal opinion which I have expressed in previous videos is that I would not open a business in Colombia. I think its too difficult to make a good return. Can you live in Medellin on $1,000 a month? Possible. My friend did an experiment last year and only spent $800 for the month. You have to give up a little but not too much. His Airbnb was $300 and he survived on the other $700 fine. That does not include any health insurance. When I moved last July I was paying $562 a month for my COBRA from my last job. Got it down to about $200 but if you are healthy you can really go uninsured and just pay if you get sick. cost is pretty cheap for hospitals etc. Also means not a lot of money on the chicas. Just find a good older woman with a job. Do not date young pretty girls. That will eat up most of your money. LOL.

@CarltonsTravelAdventures5 жыл бұрын
Hey Melissa. I have avoided that topic on purpose. Bottom line is that if you are in Colombia more than I believe 153 days in the calendar year you are required to prepare tax returns in Colombia. Does not matter if you have to pay or not. its the law. Believe it came into affect in 2016. However, I know Americans who are not preparing the taxes. I am sure the Colombian government knows it is happening but they are not making it an issue. Lets just keep it off the radar. I am not going to do a separate video on it. I am not sure of the calculation of the taxes. I have read some about it but I am not the expert therefore I will not get into it. I sent another subscriber some information by email last month. They tax your assets as well, but I believe you have to have over $1,500,000. Thanks for subscribing.

Thanks for your video Carlton. Your video popped up when I looked up the address for Sweet Georgia Cafe. I have so many Colombia videos, that i'm still yet to upload. I learnt so much in this video. the stock market still scared me. Are you on Instagram? I'd love to connect with you while 'm still in Medellin.

Wzup Africana Expat. Thanks for subscribing. Appreciate the support. The stock market can make you rick brother. don't be scured. LOL. Think long term. Imagine that young White cat retiring at 32 because of the stock market. Not bad. I am trying to figure out how to add my IG and FB in the general post. Will be done after I return from Cuba in 10 days. No more post until I return. IG: carlostravelblog This is my IG and my travel blog.

Order a Conventional Oven on Amazon and have it shipped to your Place

I heard Amazon charges a ton for shipping. I can get one here but I have gotten used to not having one. I will look for an apt with one when I renew in June

I don't think the Cuban trip should be on a cost of living video about Medellin.

Wzup Arie. I think you are a little confused. There is nothing about Cuba in my COL video. Please view it again. Thanks for subscribing.

@@CarltonsTravelAdventures Hello Carlton. I saw around the 8:55 mark when you totalled your expenses to around $1500 a month and then started talking about $325 for tickets to Cuba the following month as one of the things that come up and why you would need more than $1500 a month in Medellin. I took that as part of your budget. If that's not true I apologize.
@CarltonsTravelAdventures5 жыл бұрын
Arie, now I understand what you are saying. Thanks for the clarification. I thought I was discussing my trip to Cuba on that video. When I do a budget I include all my expenses. It is the only way to do an accurate budget, especially when you are retired. The trips I make every other month is a cost to me of retiring. The money has to come from somewhere. It is an optional cost. I always tell people to include these items. I have heard my budget is too high but it is better to be high and not spend the money than to underestimate and run into a cash problem. Guys forget to include trips back to the USA. Another big item guys forget is the probability of the exchange rate turning against you over the next 2 to 4 years. You have to budget for those items or you might run out of money and have to panic and run back to the US. Last thing I plan to do. You need a good cushion. Agreed or no? @@ariefraiser140

@@CarltonsTravelAdventures I agree to a point and we may be saying the same thing here. When I do my budget now I include all my day to day month to month expenses but have a seperate account where I throw money in for saving up for a vacation or traveling. But I only travel out the country 2-3 times a year. You appear to travel many times a year so I see why you want to account for that in a monthly budget. It wasn't spelled out in your video but I think I can deduce that you have about a $1500 baseline monthly budget if you just stayed in Medellin and anywhere from $500-1000 dedicated for travel monthly.
@CarltonsTravelAdventures5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. We are basically saying the same thing. You can include the travel in your one budget or have a separate account to account for your travel. Just as long as you are conservative and make sure you have sufficient savings in case you decide to come here and live full time. You do not want to run out of money and have to run back home to the US and look for another job (LOL). That would be depressing. Once you live here for a year you are hooked. Lastly, I try to convince guys to watch out and plan for any future change in the COP to USD exchange rate. You never know if the rate will be $2,000 to $1 in the next 12 months. Not impossible. @@ariefraiser140
