Carl…ness.
Recently awarded “MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR 20/21” for the QLD Prestige awards - Carl Wockner is a straight-up SAVAGE! (the good kind).
Latest single “Fool’s Gold” is a delicate balance of organic-acoustic POP mixed with singer-songwriter lyricism and honesty, which is exactly what you get when you’re first exposed to Carl Wockner, especially in a live setting.
Determined to pave his own path in modern music - Wockner uses multi-instrumentalism and dynamic production to take listeners on a journey through multiple genres and sonic excitement, all while telling a story.
“Recent singles of 2020 END OF ME, PAINT THE AIR, STEREO, CMB have been a collaboration with pop producer Ben Flanders. We added specific ingredients of Pop production with REAL acoustic guitar, hits, taps - vocal trills and voicing. These were all incorporated INTO the beat to give a nice earthy presence, and we even added Kazoo (on Better) just because.. I really feel like we just straight up need more kazoo in our lives!”
Carl Wockner was named the first and ONLY Australian artist to ever win Top Honors at the International Acoustic Music Award’s 2015 (USA), along with top of the AAA category for the release of his album Crayon Days with producer Michael Flanders in Nashville TN. Wockner has skipped up the charts with his first two single releases receiving high rotation to national radio in both Australia and USA which landed the title track into the International Billboard Charts. The same album has received a 2016 IMA (Independent Music Awards) Finalist nomination for Best Adult Contemporary Album. It was following this recent success that Wockner relocated his family to Nashville TN, USA as a strategic move for his evolving career.
Sept 2019, Carl was featured for an entire episode of “Backstage Marquee” a syndicate show aired across the USA featuring original artists set to be ‘the next big thing.’
Sept 2018 Wockner performed LIVE on National USA Television. The show HLN on the CNN Network for the segment “The Weekend Express,” featured Carl’s original songwriting and performance as a showcase taste of Nashville / Music City.
His rare “Live Looping” style solo performance matched only with his signature vocals and unique acoustic guitar work renders Carl in a league of his own. The live shows have been recognized throughout Australia and USA with multiple headliner performances at festivals and touring, and Wockner is now rumoured as one of the busiest musicians in Nashville, TN - aka “Music City.”
Since landing in Nashville, Wockner has released two EP’s including a Christmas release with the favoured “Santa Selfie.” Currently his latest single “Better” is noted as the best studio representation of his signature live performance style.
There’s something about Carl Wockner’s music that simply exudes peace. The peace you feel when you’re humming along to a nostalgic track, or the peace you feel when you just know everything’s going to be ok. However you connect with Carl’s music, you would agree this he is definitely onto something.
Carl’s first EP, the self-produced, recorded, mixed (all in his lounge room) Acoustic…ness, was released in 2011 to an overwhelmingly positive response. Single “Pictures” received airplay on Hot 91 FM and ZINC FM, the latter of whose DJ’s referred to him as “the man with the big hair and Golden Tonsils.” Carl was also named a finalist in three categories at the 2012 and 2013 MusicOZ awards: Acoustic Singer/Songwriter, Blues and Roots, and Pop.

I am a solo instrumental player who wants a looper only for live use, and I have the RC-30. I record tracks live only, so I never use the memories, and even if I wanted to I couldn't switch between them mid-song because of the disturbing way that Boss doubles up the functions of the optional attached footswitches (to switch tracks you must hold the footswitch down for exactly enough time to switch to the track you want and not accidentally one track more, and if you mistakenly just click the footswitch it does something else altogether; this is way too error-prone for live performance). Anyway, I play songs with multiple sections (call them A & B) of different durations and possibly different tempos. I want to record section A live, then when section B comes record B live, then when returning to section A I want to bring back the live-recorded "A" recording. The problem is that tracks 1 and 2 are synchronized, so that I cannot record two themes having different tempos and/or durations. The only way I could do this with the RC-30 is to have two of them in series and use them as completely independent units, which I don't want to do. QUESTION: will the RC-300 record two or more completely independent tracks (with different tempos and lengths) and switch between them live, with nothing pre-stored in memory? Thanks!

hahah - sorry I just wanted my 1st answer to be super short! The answer is yes for sure. The 300 you can have each track (1, 2, 3) be totally independant of the each of the others. Or you can sync either tempo (but not length) and/or Loop length.
@superhoser2816
@superhoser2816 5 жыл бұрын
Not sure if this has been asked in the ~250 comments, but if you have the same setting across each memory bank, how do you set up your individual tracks? Measure length, loop/tempo sync, etc.
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 5 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, they are all set to auto, all set to loop/tempo sync. The 1 exception is if I have a song with a longer chord progression, I’ll have track 2 set loop sync to off (but tempo sync still on) and all run all my chordal progression on that track with shorter percussion loops on the others.

Hi Carl - Thanks so much for this video, there are not many that go into such great detail regarding the actual nitty gritty of the live situation. Thanks to you I've found a use for my expression pedal as a volume control - fully back cuts the input volume by just over half, so I know I'm safe to layer for a while without things becoming muddy and upsetting. Love your work, sir!
@carlwockner

Thanks Mate, not sure if you know but you can actually set the minimum and maximum state of the expression pedal. So if you wish you can set the Expression pedal to go from 0 volume through to 200% volume. Id suggest ranging from 0-100% volume, the you can just use it to alter the input signal into the loops:)

Tks Carl. Great sound great vibe, too. Listen. I've been using rc300 since it came out. (I still own my RC20XL, btw, amazing gadget). I may help in a small but useful way: If you don't use pedal FX that much, why dont you do as I did: assign to that pedal track clearing (Track clear 1, track clear 2 and track clear 3) all using pedal Fx pedal as the target. That way you clear everything without having to move forward in the pach selection or using another external pedal for that particular use. I only say this because everyone is so outraged with the fact that rc300 doesn't have a clear all footswitch. Well, it actually does. It is rather simple and incredibly useful. Hug from sunny Portugal, Tks again, hope I could be helpful.

Thanks Terylene Duo, thats a great use of the FX Switch:) I personally do actually use my FX for some Chorus sometimes, not to mention I deliberately have my clear all extension pedal separate to the board so that I don't accidentally bump it during the song, which I have done before on the scroll wheel haha. Good to hear you're trying different configurations with your own rig though:)

So why not assign the clearing of all three tracks to the off board footswitch? Clearing all tracks realy saves the hassle of switching presets, it's all done in one preset! No need to copy to several locations too! ;-) Just got the RC-300 (had a RC-30 before this one) but it's the first functionality i was searching for. By the way, great video!!

@carlwockner

hey mate, thanks for the sub, and the message! yes you just assign the pedal to the MEM (Memory) Volume which is essentially the overall loop volume. set the pedal when flat at 100, and when kicked backwards at 0. Then you can just use it as a volume dial for your loops. some people set the flat setting to be 120 (meaning 120% volume) just in case they need to turn up the loops a little, but I strongly advise to keep it normalised at 100. otherwise you get foggy on your input signals and how loud you record stuff.

@carlwockner
@carlwockner 5 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, so if the "PA" is clipping then you just need to turn down the input signal in the PA mixer. Otherwise if its not the PA, then the signal is clipping before it gets to the PA and you are just hearing it out the speakers from an earlier signal. My general advise for ANY PA settings is to begin with your PA at unity (100% volume). then work backwards so that you're not clipping the input signal anywhere. Hope this helps

Which is totally fine but you have some increased technical weaknesses when touring. And for the most part in Ableton you also need someone to make adjustments while you play. (Or in post if you’re recording a video). It’s certainly an option - but for the sake of simple setup, provided you set the right tones and signals, the rc300 is a great standalone option.
@Flieder
@Flieder 4 жыл бұрын
your options are really unlimited. you don‘t need someone to help while your playing. but you could if you want. you can build a tipical footswitch looper or you can programm your loops, so you don‘t have to worry about looping and focus on your playing. Depending on your set-up you choose your hardware. if you just run your guitar throug the looper a simple interface is enough.
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 4 жыл бұрын
@@Flieder Totally! its certainly handy if you're running an interface with more than a stereo send, as you could route different loops / parts to different outs etc.. currently on the RC300 Im using 4 outs (2 stereo, 2 mono) and they can be mixed separately. The handy thing about what your saying is that each set of loops can be bussed to unlimited bus sends and provided your interface has enough outputs, they can all be sent seperate. and even pre-mixed in the live DAW prior to actual live mixing. My main issue is the setup becomes a little more elaborate (which is fine really) and makes for a longer setup / stage changeover time - but mostly I feel unless you are really exploring sonic tones and separation the audio benefit upgrade isn't worth it (provided you are getting the most out of the RC300) unless you're touring on a large stage - and can truly benefit from having a loop engineer also to really dive into the capacity of the setup.

Great video! I saw some had asked similar questions but I don't think I am understand, I hope you don't mind. I play acoustic and sing, similar to you, and anytime I try and set up some sort of vocal looping I end up with the vocal mic picking EVERYTHING up while I am looping guitar. How do you keep your vocals and guitar separate while loop/recording so there isn't any bleeding over and muddying of the final mix? I tried setting up the pedal to kill the mic in volume but it doesn't seem to always do it. I feel like this shouldn't be that hard, am I overthinking it? :)
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mate, yes thats always an issue - a few things to think about, certainly the volume of your looping mic, how loud your stage/floor wedge is (this is a big issue) - this is mostly why I use In Ear Monitors, and also what mic you are using for the looping mic. The looping Mic Ive found that works well is a standard Shure SM58 as it has a tight cardioid pattern that doesnt pick up a lot of ambient noise. A mute switch helps a lot also - if yours doesnt always work, then Id get a new switch! Check out Stompbeat.com - they do fantastic popless ones that are neat and small. I hope that helps
@johnnygacoustic

@@carlwockner Thank you so much for your reply. I use a SM58 for the looping, and typically IEM with no wedge. I am thankful for the link for the mute switch! I will certainly consider this! I love the RC300 but this little flaw has been frustrating :)

Hey! Thanks for the video! What brand of case is this? What are its dimensions? Does the case close with the shelf? I’ve been using an RC-30 for quite some time with a pedaltrain jr. But I just upgraded and I’m trying to find a solution. Really enjoy your vids... thanks again.
@carlwockner

Hey mate, sorry for the late reply. its a custom case, you can get them made anywhere online or usually in most cities. But they aren't usually cheap. I would suggest to find a Pelican Case or something that is similar dimensions to what you're after, then build a pedal board to fit the case, instead of find a case to fit your pedals. if that makes sense:) A pelican or plastic mould case is great for protection, and is easy to just get a piece of plywood cut to suit. Then you can just paint it and mount your pedals and you know it will fit great:)

Why have an extra mic for Harmony and beatbox? Why not just use an a/b switch instead?
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 4 жыл бұрын
you could totally do that for sure - I desire different mic characteristics for each - for instance I like a warmer/bassy low/up close tone for my beatboxing, and very tight polar pattern of the 58 for my loop vox, and I like a more airy - present higher quality mic for my main vocal. Each wouldn't do the job I like for the other. Not to mention - personally I prefer the visual on stage of 2 mic's, it gives the audience more understanding of exactly what Im doing whereas when i used to ab switch 1 mic, most people had no clue what was going on:)

Technically you could overdub on each of the tracks almost as many times as you want but if you wanted individual tracks you could add another smaller looper. I don't believe you can set the expression or fx pedal to be an extra track.

Hi Carl, I do live looping and would like to put together a simple setup, just my guitar plugged in to a multi-effects pedal and then plugged into the RC-300, sending the direct output to the active box, you recommend the Line 6 M5 to that? I like to use Reverb, Delay, Chorus, and if necessary some Overdrive or Distortion, the last two being disposable.
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 4 жыл бұрын
hi Chris! Thanks for the comment. It depends on your budget for the Multi effects pedal. putting overdrive or distortion on an acoustic without certain processing doesnt sound very good - so if you were planning on having that I would recommend something like a Line 6 HX Stomp which would cover all those things. Or even the HX FX. Although if you wanted a cheaper option yes either the Line 6 M5 or M9 would be a great option - except the fact they wont have the processing to get a good overdrive or distortion tone from an acoustic. You should be able to get a good deal on a used m5 or m9. :) both have tuners built in also. for the small difference in price I would go the M9 as it has more switches at your feet:)

Hello my friend. First of all, congratulations on the content. It is very good to have people like you who are willing to help. I have the following problem: I can separate all the RC300 tracks on my mixer by doing the following: 1. I direct track 1 to SUB and turn the PAN to L; 2. I direct track 2 to SUB and turn the PAN to R; 3. I direct track 3 to MAIN and see PAN to L; 4. I turn my guitar on at input R, and it automatically comes out only at MAIN at output R; With that, I get a separate equalization for each pedal output! The problem in question is THE CLICK! This only gives me an option to TOTALLY map to MAIN or TOTALLY to SUB! Is there any way to make it come out separately tmb? Is there an alternative to hearing a separate click? I say that, because it doesn't work to use an EXTERNAL click (from another program, application or pedal) because you can never sync 100% with the loops, it would have to be the CLICK of the RC 300 itself.

The problem is that the script is coming and goes every 4 or 5 seconds, so right now I can use my loop station anymore . Hi Carl!! Really congrats for this great video! Many of the things you said turned so useful for my live setup, so thank you so much for sharing "your way"! I actually have got a question, don't know whether you are able to help me...I'm playing a song where I record first on track 3, and at the end of the 4th measure of the recording of track 3 I hit play on track 1. When hitting the rec-dub-play pedal on track 1, track 3 starts playback and track 1 starts recording. After 4 measures I hit playback for track 1 as well. After some measures I stop all tracks. I now start recording on track 2 for 4 measures and after those 4 measures I hit the play pedal of track 3 in order to start playback on track 2 (ending the recording) and starting playback on track 3 as well. What I get instead is playback on track 3 and overdub on track 2 that was recording so far. Do you know how can I "solve" the issue? Of course the system REC pdl Act is set to REC->PLAY and tempo and loop sync are on for all the 3 tracks of the preset. It would be great if you could help me with this! Thank you so much in advance!!

Thank you for putting this video up Carl. I loved your advice about setting your tone before it hits the PA. I've been working on just that for years now, different guitars, different pick-ups, DIs etc. And now I'm looking at adding looping to my live sound, basically to allow me to solo over my own rhythm loop and do harmony vox. I'm not sure whether the RC300 is overkill, so I'm reviewing all the options. Your video gave me a good insight into other ideas of what can be done with this technology.

I have a Big Muff and the line 6 m5 that I see you have on your board. The manual for the Rc300 said to not plug any non boss pedals into it due to risking damage. I guess my question is how and where did you hook up the line 6 m5 and should I connect the big muff to the m5. Great tune!

Hey Pher, thanks for the comment. That manual comment is just to cover them for any damages, but you can plug absolutely any pedal into the RC 300 - PROVIDED that you are plugging the cable from the "out" section of any pedal into the "input" section of the RC300. Boss pedals are just a brand like all the other brands. Guitar goes in - tone comes out.
