MSRP is nothing but a number the manufacture thinks the market will bear. It is not a close account of the amount of money it took to build that vehicle. If you can get the invoice price, double that difference from MSRP then subtract that number from MSRP to get an approximation of what the dealer paid the Manufacturer for the car. (This I don't know) but I would think subtract that number again to get a number close to what it took to produce the vehicle.
@TheSonyExperience7 сағат бұрын
There is a simpler way. You can look at the manufacturers margin numbers. Ford has an average profit margin of 3.5% so if they sell a car for 40K, the margin would be 1,240. For everyday mass market cars, the margins are trash. Luxury vehicles have better margins but it varies.

new car sellers have to provide a warranty, used car sellers generally have none or 30 days at most. Not paying out thousands every 10-20 cars allows them to make more money with a lower price, vs a new car dealer that can't do that. I also notice Carmax is offering low ball amounts for trades, and that helps profit.

You guys crack me up. Last month, you were claiming they were overpriced and couldn't sell cars. Now sales are up, and their making money and can afford to sit on inventory. You're worse than the kid who cried wolf.

One of the greatest advantages of buying from CarMax (and Carvana, etc) is that there's no thieving, lying, scumbag car dealers to deal with. This is especially true if you are trading in a vehicle. Many people cannot or don't want to negotiate and are happy to avoid the stressful situation of dealing with salespeople. If course you would be an exception. 😁♥️😁

Carmax is a dealer. When I was purchasing a car there they pushed hard for extended warranty like all other dealers.

If new cars are sitting 1-2-3 years can the buyer just tell the dealership that at this point they are considered used since they have probably not been serviced?

You don't have to pay for any of that sh-t. What you do is show up late and drag things out for hours way past dinner time until you get a fair deal on the new vehicle. We just did it.

Like it or not, CarMax has a very successful business model. You go to a dealer and you maybe get to see Buick/GMC and maybe Chevy and that's it. So you go from lot to lot and having to deal with salesmen after salesmen,. With Carmax, you get to look at cars from almost every single maker in one lot. CQA's business model is obviously different.

@@tradermunky1998 It makes them very upside down. I had a '21 Silverado Z71 Trailboss I bought around Christmas 2020 just before Covid. Carmax is turning real cash into inventory. That's only good if they can sell the inventory for more than they paid for it. Car dealers are selling their new inventory holdovers at a discount because they couldn't sell some of these overpriced new cars. Carmax is losing money if they can't sell these leftovers even if they have been bought at a discount. Also, all these unsold cars at Carmax are losing value just sitting in the parking lot. Finally, the 20% interest buyers can lose their car because they can't handle the payments and still owe money to the finance company.

The price that’s listed is the actual price you pay. They don’t tack on doc fees and other stuff like dealers do

They have thousands upon thousands of cars that can be shipped to your local Carmax. You can be very specific. I had them send a 2017 Porche Boxter, drove it a few days, and returned it. I didn't like the handling, or the closing of the top. It was well worth the $99 I lost in shipping. I decided to just stick with my Z line.

"CarMax is a good company" is kind of a stretch, considering that 20%+ car loans. As a business, sure, charge the fools as much as you can who wants to buy stuff they can not afford. I guess tt is similar to drug dealers and users, who is there to blame, "the chicken or the egg".

Auto companies were getting rid of the lower value vehicles. Build less high price vehicles. Make much more per vehicle and make more profit. And not have to build as many vehicles.
