Valiant owners take note this is a very common issue and the full extent of the problem isn't obvious until he steering box is removed. Years ago there was a strengthening plate available check with rare spares.

You may be able to find the schematic for the plate and cut one out of 3mil sheet . I was going to suggest that anyway.

This chassis rail wasn't in too bad nick Scotty! My VE had a tide mark of rust from water sitting trapped in the chassis by the baffle plates at the centre bolt crush tube. I cut out and replaced the rail and baffles right up to the first K frame bolt plate. Those Chrysler engineers worked real hard to create that water trap.. all that was missing was the corner copes to let the water drain. Great show mate

10 minutes in and im happy to see the sleeve hasn't been used, I have unpicked and removed a few sleeves and they just hide the issue IMO making it worse years later. My Sedan has a sleeve and its just cracked elsewhere, My Ute has been repaired the way Scotty is doing it and its still fine 10 years later and remember these sleeves have been made by a few different people over the years and they are not all equal in quality. As for unpicking the rail and replacing it? Well you need a CM Valiant rail (In the dying days of Chrysler Aust they actually made the rails properly) to replace it and back when Roundies (Later model VH onwards) where just good for charger floorpan sections and chassis rail swaps this wasnt a bad way to do this job as they used to be cheap and unloved but theres not many left and its just not economical to do it this way anymore. You Can buy a rail from the US for an A Body but they need bits welded to them and this defeats the purpose........ Onya Scotty for doing it the right way, Not the easy TAVO way.

I'm fixing up a kombi camper at the moment and every small rust spot usually doubles once you cut it out. Every time I get the chance to squirt some rustolium rust converter in behind panels or rails I blast the compressed air in there and spray the rustolium into the air stream and it spreads it in further than the can can spray and hopefully it will get to spots that I can't see and help to slow the dreaded worm. Keep up the good work.

A bit of a surprise. I always thought that the inside of the rails around the steering box were also reinforced with crush tubes and the like. But maybe that was only the later stuff. The mig makes it easy though. First time I did one of those I used the OXY . It wasn't forgiving around rust.
@damienmills293
@damienmills293 4 жыл бұрын
This design flaw saw more Valiants scrapped than any other issue. I know as I threw 2 away... The chassis rail did not last 50 years before it cracked. Many failed within 10. The repair required engine out and was expensive and many "repairs" lasted 2 years before the crack reappeared. You may well need to plate further down the chassis as it will crack along the edge of your plate....

The memories... VH, worse than this, gravel drive, oxy acetylene welding torch. Had to replace the internal reinforcement and take off that bottom mounting. Then got carried away and rode into town on my pushbike and got all new ball joints from the Mitsubishi dealer. That was the start of my experience that replacing front suspension items was a fairly regular affair.

it's been a problem here for 30-40 years, there are plenty of repair panels on the market, but due to the rarity of the cars tracking them down nowadays is a bit of a mission, these cars where never that popular to begin with and the fact valiant/Chrysler just went bust in 1983ish didn't help ... if memory serves all the old body molds/presses where left to rot in the old tonlsy park factory and where still there in the late 90's/early 2000's
