The development of the film started when Zahler's friend and manager Sonnier recommended creating a film adaptation of Zahler's Western novel Wraiths of a Broken Land. Realizing that such a project cannot be adapted on a low budget, Zahler opted to write a rescue Western instead. Casting began in October 2014, with Sarsgaard, Olyphant, and Carpenter signed on to play before being replaced by Wilson, Fox, and Simmons respectively due to scheduling conflicts. Principal photography took place in California for 21 days in October 2014.

I love Carnage counts but doing it for this flick is kind of tough. The movie is pretty slow burn, and you get to like the characters, so when it gets violent (and the violence is way, way more painful than it is in most movies) it's like a cold slap in the face. A kick in the nuts, even. I watched this flick with no clue what I was getting into and it about knocked me off the couch.
@vanivari3592 жыл бұрын
yeah, the movie did a great job at making the characters likeable and the killing very... brutal without exaggeration, very intimate and personal. There isn't even a lot of it, but it left a much deeper impression than any Rambo-like movie with dozens of people blown up by exploding arrows.

@@magicjohnson3121 Not racist. The tribe isn't even any particular Native American tribe as the movie states. And to be frank, even if it was they could have selected a tribe that had a history of brutal violence. It was a rough world, some tribes were brutal how they treated captives. Worse than what's depicted in this movie. Some tribes have bad blood that exist to this day because of centuries old conflicts that predate the conquest of white people. Obviously white people committed terrible attrocitoes against Native Americans; the Sand Creek Massacre perpetrated by the U.S. Army in 1864 was beyond comprehension as far as evil is concerned. Reality is filled with horror, evil can unfortunately be found anywhere that humanity has graced. We humans are capable of depths of love and evil that are unimaginable regardless of our color, creed, or nationality.

In the cave, realizing two of their clan were poisoned, the Troglodyte leader grows angry. They cut open Hunt's abdomen, shove the heated opium flask into the wound, and shoot him. Arthur arrives and kills one of them while Hunt decapitates the leader. Arthur frees Samantha and Chicory, while a mortally wounded Hunt stays behind with a rifle. He promises to kill the surviving cannibals when they return, to prevent them from terrorizing Bright Hope. As the three leave the cave, they see two pregnant Troglodyte women, who are blinded and have had all their limbs amputated. After the party is at a distance from the valley, Arthur blows on the Troglodyte whistle, with no response. They then hear three gunshots, implying that Hunt has killed the remaining Troglodytes.
