You are way off the topic that is being discussed; but if you never get on a cruise ship, then you will definitely never be late returning and get left behind. I have been on several cruises; but when it comes to being left behind for not returning on time, it’s not about good luck, it’s about using common sense and following the ship’s rules.

Wait. You’re on a cruise ship, where exactly do you need for that cruise ship to be that it absolutely must leave right on time? What is your delay? You’re still going to get to the next port of call, you’re still going to be able to make your dinner time, your stateroom is still ready for you. The only operation that isn’t running at the port is the casino, and if you need to get to the casino THAT BADLY, you’ve got bigger problems than passengers being late 😂

I was on a cruise once where the departure time was extended due to a passenger being injured on an excursion to Dunns River Falls in Jamaica. Always book your excursions through your cruise ship and you’ll be covered. When people book independently they sometimes run into problems.
@winh998
@winh998 Жыл бұрын
Sure do. Several of us were on an excursion we booked ourselves right off the ship. On the return to the ship, the bus broke down. We were about 5 miles from the port and had about 45 minutes before the ship sailed. The owner did not answer his phone and we all panicked, including the driver. A couple of the guys got off the bus and went to take a look and found something was loose or broken but somehow they got it fixed. We made it back with 5 minutes to spare. Good ole American know-how, can't beat it, even in another country.

@@paulras01 Our ETA was one hour before sailing which gave us plenty of time but when we (tourists) realized we were broken down it was about 45 minutes away. Five miles is less than 5 minutes so although we were worried, we did not panic. Please keep your advice. I have been cruising (pre-pandemic) for over 10 years and have booked ship excursions and private excursions. A lot depends on the ports of call as to whether I book a private or ship excursion.

I have sailed with Carnival multiple times and I have two more booked for next year. Carnival makes it very clear about what time you are expected back at the ship at every port. They tell you to make sure that you are on the ship's time and not the island's time. Most of the time if someone is missing they wait a short time after the sailing time but they will not wait long. If you are late because of the excursion that you booked through Carnival then they will wait until you return but if you are late because of an excursion you booked on your own then they will not wait. YOU are responsible for getting back to the ship on time. YOU WILL be responsible for getting to the next port or back to the home port. Stop with the entitlement mentality.

This is something that I found online about circumstances of when a cruise ship will leave the port: Generally, ships wait as long as they possibly can for passengers to return, but it also depends on how tight the schedule is, the mood of the officers in charge and whether port officials allow the ship to stay docked for a longer period of time. As you see it's not always up to the cruise line as to when they have to leave.

We were on a Carnival excursion in Hawaii. Our guide driving our tourist van ran into a retaining wall, wrecking the left front tire and quarter panel. They had to call for another bus to get us…. Luckily this was a carnival excursion, so the ship had to wait for us. When we finally got back to the dock, People were jeering at us, not knowing we had just been in a car accident. They ended up refunding us for the entire excursion, and sent the typical chocolate covered strawberries. The driver actually told the cruise line we got a flat tire. It was a little more than a flat tire…and I showed the customer service agent the picture of the wrecked van. Craziness.

Our first cruise was with Carnival with a group of friends. We went to Montego Bay. I booked with Carnival a trip to Appleton estate. Going up into the mountains. the van had trouble. The tour op sent another for us. We did Appleton tour. It was great. Just as we were supposed to leave. A big thunderstorm came up. Had to wait at Appleton for maybe an hour. While there we had "free drinks". We left and the roads were full of downed trees. I helped clear the roads. We got back to ship at least an hour late. The van driver pulled us up at the gangway. The ship was already loose. Only holding via thrusters. We got hee hawed by all the passengers on that side. As soon as we crossed that gangway. The crew yanked it it. Glad we had that one booked via Carnival.

I'm experiencing flashbacks. Something similar happened to me and 2 family members 20 years ago. Only it wasn't a ship. It was a sightseeing bus tour in Long Island. We stopped to pick strawberries and we got the time to be back on the bus mixed up. So we were left. But thankfully we were near a train station. So we just took the train back home. This was a good lesson learned. We went on many more trips after that. We just made sure we wrote down the times to be back. We were never left again.

I have never had to run a pier because, even during my first cruise, I read ALL the instructions, the cruise contract, and watched countless videos on cruising. *There is really no excuse to be late.* My advice to any newbies would be to never, ever book an excursion outside of the cruise lines. Keep your phone in airplane mode so that it matches the ship's time. Set multiple alarms on your phone to remind you when there's 3 hours, 2 hours, and 1 hour before the cruise leaves. When that last 1 hour alarm goes off, you should be At The Gangway Getting On The Ship. That is a hard rule I live by while cruising. I am always back on the ship a minimum of one hour before the time. *Better to be safe than stranded.*

This happened to my mom and her friend in New Orleans, the cruise ship left, they were late, but while standing there, a tugboat pulled up and asked if they missed the boat, they said yes, so he said he could get them on the boat for $100 each, they agreed, so the tug captain radioed the the ship ahead to slow up, and as he pulled up to the Cruiseship a door open on the side and they dropped a rope ladder to climb aboard, I don't know how they did it, they were both 60+ but they got up there somehow. 🤷

People have to understand port and dock fees are very expensive especially if they stay past their time. Another ship might be coming in, only the dock workers and the ships officers know this. And lastly ships have a schedule to keep and aren't like cars. They can only go so fast. It's not like in a car when your going 65mph and your behind schedule so you bump it up to 85mph. Ships might be able to go a few knots faster but that's it.

Ex cruise ship worker here, the head of guest relations, crew office and chief security knows beforehand who's not on board before sail away. In relation to guests, the cabin steward and a security officer goes to their cabin and search for their passports, wallets, purses ect and they're send to guest relations who then hands them over to the port agent. The port agent will then transfer their property to them and they're responsible to make it to the next port of call or back to the home port on their own. Same applies to crew but it's the crew office that handles the property transfer as all crew passports are kept. Yes, the crew can't keep their passports while on a contract because they might jump ship.. I don't think the same applies for American crew, but most American crew are considered like semi guests..

I told her that I her daughter. She then asks me if she is still off the ship. Earlier that morning she told us she wasn't going to get off! Just at that moment the lady on the phone says "oh here she comes!". All aboard was at 530. She called me at 529. My mom also got scammed out of $40 while off the ship. The best ways to be on time back to the cruise ship to avoid being left behind is to use what I call the 2 hour rule and that is to be back on board 2 hours before the cruise ship departs the port of call. The second way is to wear a wristwatch that requires manual setting of the time so you can always be sure that you are on ship time and not shore time because ship time is not always the same as shore time. Also if you plan to go off to do any shopping on your own it is very important to set a time limit and go by that time limit meaning once the time is up it is time to stop and head back to the ship to ensure that you are back on board at least 2 hours ahead of the scheduled departure.

Ive been to Roatan Island, Cozumel, & a few other cruises and one of my most jarring memories of each one is the multiple announcements that says...YOU WILL be LEFT if you are not back to the ship on time AND will have the extra expense of getting home or to the next port. It can be extremely difficult logistically to get to the next port of call to reboard the ship & alot of people probably end up back state side. I always remember thinking to myself that I couldnt think of a quicker way to TOTALLY RUIN a vacation. We typically opted to get back earlier than they stated to avoid any mishaps...

This is a good reminder to 1) stay on ship’s time and keep track of it, 2) take your passport or at least a photo of your passport with you when you leave the ship, 3) take a credit card, and 4) take an excursion sponsored by the cruise line. After 53 cruises, I’ve only heard announcements that we were waiting for an excursion to return so we were delaying departure three times as I recall. I’ve heard the announcements for people to report to Guest Services probably a dozen times while in port and subsequently we left at about an hour later than planned. I sail RC primarily. But I’ve seen dock runners, the most notable group was seen not on the dock but on the road, I was on a land vacation in Jamaica. There was a huge traffic jam due to a sudden sink hole in the main road through Ocho Rios. We saw an entire wedding party, bride in gown and all, running along the road…their transportation must have been stuck in the traffic and the ship’s horn had sounded. Not the best way to begin a marriage but they will never forget it.

Why several hours? Your ship is in port only a few hours already, an hour should be plenty of time to get back on time

I have been on many cruises and you are always given a schedule of time in port and the time of departure. But it never fails that some people never get the message.

Yes indeed - always give yourselves extra time - especially on private shore tours. We’ve done lots of private trips on 17 cruises and never had any problems. The cruise line also gives you an emergency phone number to reach the cruise line in each port. Our minimum time before sail away is 2 hours. Sometimes you are left outside the port itself and can have a 20 minute or so walk to the ship. Just plan ahead.

The last time I saw this happen on HAL, the head of the hotel department was standing at the gangway and she had the passports in her hand. Apparently HAL goes into the cruisers safe and removes the passports. When the couple did not show up she gave the passports to an official on the dock. The man standing next to me said “I hope they have a credit card with them.”

That's what Carnival does. There's a port representative that lives at the port, and their job is to help pier runners get home or to the next port. Carnival security will go into the pier runners' rooms to gather up their passports and important documents and hand them off to the port representative. I watched this happen on the Carnival Legend in Alaska in 2017. The port representative seemed more upset than the couple amiably taking their time back to the ship.

@@Cory69 We saw this happen with NCL in Martinique. They can get into the safe. In that case the girls made it back barely and were soundly cheered by all of us out watching for pier runners.

@@Cory69you scan your room card to get back on, it’s all computerized… they know exactly whose missing at least 30-45 mins prior to leaving, because by then everyone is already back

ALWAYS RUN - no matter if the ship is leaving. Often the crew of the ship is watching for runners. If you are not running as hard as you can, whoever makes the call to help you might decide not to help you. If you RUN there is a small chance someone will take pity on you and you might find yourself getting a ride to the ship.

Once the ship has left the dock, there is very little chance it is coming back. However, a runner might convince a ship still at the dock to delay removing the ramps and closing the doors for a short time.

😂 Yep, always 🏃 run. We ran like hell getting to the ship, fortunately they waited. Security was standing out with a radio asking each person their cabin numbers. He radioed in each missing passenger until we were all accounted for...never again.

I remember the Aforst Cruise i took and this happened to 2 people. At forst it was funny. Then a strange since of pitty for two Strangers. Ultimately, it made me ask the time at least 4 times before leavinf the ship then setting an Alarm to head back with poenty of time to spare.
