absolutely wonderful! I rescued a Welsh pony 12 years ago, did the natural horsemanship and friendship before I even knew what it was!!! We are BEST Partners and family ever! I will never ever part with him. as we walk along anywhere, I don't need a line, ride bitless and bareback (not for long) and we LOVE eachother!!!!

Hi AMonikaD and Welcome! Great to hear about your relationship with your Welsh pony! I love to hear stories like yours, thanks for sharing! Should you want to learn more, I offer a wide array of learning opportunities here at my FL facility and on my online training academy for people and horses. Here is a little more about my approach. We believe in a holistic approach to horsemanship, providing expert knowledge and instruction for the whole horse and rider. Our approach is multi-dimensional and includes the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of both the person and horse’s well-being. We specialize in both foundation training and problem-solving and have the answers you are searching for. The key in horsemanship and having the partner you want with your horse is in foundation training. If your horse has either had 1) trauma or 2) hasn’t had a correct and solid foundation (start), they will either be too scared to learn or missing key building blocks to their development. Horses need years of development and learning to be at the level you see in many of the professional clinician and trainer’s horses - including what you see in my videos. There are no quick fixes, tricks or gimmicks and like any solid education, it takes a curriculum or program to follow so you are building a correctly foundation. We have 8 training modules that we follow in our curriculum that specialize in self-awareness, the spiritual connection, relationship, discipline, confidence, biomechanics and balanced riding. Click here for details on our training pyramid www.riderhorsemanship.com/rh-training-program. Should you be interested in learning online, we offer a very large and comprehensive online training academy for people and horses. I stumbled upon this video and wow perfect timing! I have a very difficult mare that I had debated on selling. She had led a difficult life and my heart bled for her when I bought her. I’m partially disabled and with her trust issues she was at once very dangerous toward me. I almost gave up. Today, she was extremely difficult for the farrier and again I had feelings of wanting to give up. I cried for nearly an hour thinking about her and how much I care and love her. Then I saw your video and it helped me realize it’s not just me. It made me open my eyes again to how much she needs a partner and needs me to keep at it. Thank you for posting this video!

Caroline you are the best horse-person I've ever came across with! I studied many NHS-trainers, made up my own mind and worked my way into these techniques. It was my highly spooky Arabian mare who tought me your approach. After 6 yrs together our bond is a dream. Currently I'm helping other horse-owners to connect this way with their horses. But to refine my body-language and do it right the first time, I will from now on fallow your training-methods . You are truly the best!

I’m always blown away at how deep your level of understanding of not only horses, but energy. Would love to hear more about your experience with meditation/mindfulness. Was it something you started before working with horses? I definitely feel like it gives you an advantage over a lot of the clinicians I’ve seen who have decades of experience working with horses but I would say their style is much more “cowboy.” For instance, Clinton Anderson is one I would say is capable of getting a horse to be compliant but is lacking in so much, the emotional connection part of it. Not trying to bash anybody. He is definitely “effective“ but for those who want something more, your approach is completely unique. Do you think you’ll do any more traveling or clinics out of state? I know you have some older videos of clinics you’ve done and various places.

Love this video and the methods you are using. I was working with one horse who did not like her sides being touched and would nip when I did. Hence she was also saying no to being saddled and ridden. I wanted to work this from the ground at liberty to start and relax her, but am unsure how to progress. Often I would speak softly while gently moving in on her sides, leaving my elbow up for her to run into if she protested. But I'm not sure if that is the most helpful. Any advice?

Not bad at all but I like to add one thing I've learned: When you're trying to connect especially with wild or traumatized horses, you should go slowly towards them but then, before the horse is going to flight, you step back again, going towards again, and back again, repeat this a few times. Try it, it completes the whole process of hooking on and works really good!

Because he wasn't socialized with horses or humans Midnite Star, my arabian stallion, only knew how to fight off predators. His space was too small to run away or he probably would have learned that instead. At six years old his only interactions with humans was two days of unsuccessful attempts to halter him. He learned two things. Humans are predators that hunt in packs. They will trap him and twist his ears. The second thing he learned was that he could fight off humans more easily than other predators. It was hard to get through to him and when all else failed I sat with him for hours each day. Finally he stopped threatening and striking and smelled me from head to toe pushing body parts out of his way so he could his nose into arm pits and everything else. After that he accepted me as his human and I had his trust. From that moment on he has been a willing friend and partner who will do anything I ask of him once I make myself clearly understood. I went from wondering what I was thinking to take him instead of the well trained trail horse I was shopping for to knowing I'd chosen the perfect horse for me. I couldn't have found a better companion for what will almost certainly be the last horse I'll have in my life. When your oldest son is a grandfather of three and your youngest will turn 41 in a few weeks you know you'll be lucky to live as long as your horse.

Hallo Caroline. Thank you for sharing this. I really struggle to finde the differences in what is 'too much pressure' and making the horse submissive or not. If the horse is distracted and not having its attention on you, you will apply just enough pressure to make yourself important, right? What if the horse is very anxious about its surrounding and being away from its herd and having a high stress level and therefore will run more? Thank you in advance! By the way, I would like to have a look in your online course, but is there any other way than purchasing via credit card? There is also no information on how the payment goes regarding an abonnement or so.

Hi Scared189 and Welcome! The horse in this video, Zor, is more prone to freezing (shutting down and checking out) first and then going into flight mode. Even then he is still apt to act flighty and reactive when unsure. Getting big with both energy and action helps re-direct his attention from the "scary" thing and back onto me. I have to be spot on and grounded when I ask him to check back in with me or I loose all credibility and trust. The whole purpose of getting his attention back on me is to PROVE I am worthy enough for him to trust, feel safe and comfortable. Now, for more flighty horses I would first see if they can tune into me and get quiet, ground with me (or get centered). If they can't you have to WORK WITH their energy and GUIDE their energy. You can't just let them run around crazy or they will learn that this is how we respond to scary things. It's a delicate dance here as you have to allow them to move and you need to direct that movement, back and forth and all-the-while be in a grounded state. I teach all of this, the how-to in my online course. Should you be interested in learning more about my work and my training method I offer an extensive and revolutionary online training academy that hosts three of my equine training courses: The Tao Method Course, Discovering the Spirituality of Horsemanship Course and Problem Solving and Strategy Video Courses. Each course focuses on one concrete area of horsemanship - from deepening the connection and relationship to developing the best riding foundation and problem-solving strategies for challenging areas and horses. Each was designed to not only educate and problem solve but to empower and inspire! Hi Sidilicious and Welcome! Thank you! Click here for details about our online academy training courses www.taoacademy-horse-training-courses.com/. Should you want to learn the step-by-step curriculum, please click here www.taoacademy-horse-training-courses.com/taomethodcourse. Can this be done in a huge pasture with other horses around or do you HAVE to separate the horse?
@TaoofHorsemanship

Hi Darlene and Welcome! I do not recommend you trying this with other horses around or in a large pasture. A horse like this one, who doesn't trust and is easily influenced by other horses will gravitate to those influences. You need to set yourself up for success and this means being alone and in a small enough space that you helps you both connect and reconnect easily. Should you be interested in learning more about my work and training, I offer an extensive and revolutionary online training academy that hosts three of my equine training courses: The Tao Method Course, Discovering the Spirituality of Horsemanship Course and Problem Solving and Strategy Video Courses. Each course focuses on one concrete area of horsemanship - from deepening the connection and relationship to developing the best riding foundation and problem-solving strategies for challenging areas and horses. Each was designed to not only educate and problem solve but to empower and inspire! The education and step-by-step practices I offer through my online courses and training programs is both comprehensive and unique. My training programs are not only intuitive based they are practical combining extensive, expert knowledge with thorough, step-by-step exercises and strategies. Grace Allen Hi caroline, I really love this method and have started to try it a little bit on my 4 year old arabian mare. The problem is she get's very aggressive with me, she has no respect for me and sees no reason as to why I should be allowed to enter her space, I feel like she really dislikes me. I love her so much though, and it breaks my a little to see her really not want me around. Please help, thank you :)

Caroline Rider Hi Grace and welcome! I see this behavior often and with mares especially. Mares, like women, are hardwired differently from males. Mares are bossy and protective by nature. This is how they handle the herd and raising their young. Understanding your mares nature is just as important as figuring out her behavior and why she does what she does. I always have intention and purpose when Being and doing (working) with horses. While I don't condone a horse pinning their ears and coming at me when I am either Being with them or asking them to participate in the work, I want to find a balance between making sure my horse knows I am there for them, with compassion, and I don't accept their behavior. This level of awareness is my intention and I will support my intention with action. My heart will say I love you and my mind will speak to my horse saying I want to understand you better and my mind and body will also say, you have to meet me in this space and with respect. I will not tolerate disrespectful attitude and actions. Now you are set up with clear intention. You must also teach your mare how to respect you and you must earn it. You earn it by being clear and having the heart-felt intention and conversation I described above AND you learn how to rhythmically move her out! You teach her that she cannot come into your space unless her eyes are soft, her ears are perked forward and her body comes in slowly. When she looks like this she is asking a question "can I come in?" This is how you will earn respect and teach her about boundaries. You will maintain the pressure until you get a try, slightest positive difference. You will reward the slightest try with praise and soft touch. Should she get pushy again or look pissy move her out and have the intention/conversation with her that her actions/attitude are unacceptable. In the end, most of the work that needs to be done is within you. You must learn to be clear, communicate clearly and act clearly. Please visit my website for educational DVD's: www.riderhorsemanship.com. Keep me posted! Warmly, Caroline

I think you should check out the quadrants of operant conditioning: youre literally chasing her and saying you’re “making friends” you’re literally chasing her till she shuts down. You’re being a predator. You are literally pushing and dominating the horse. This is embarrassing
@TaoofHorsemanship
@TaoofHorsemanship 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bloomfield and Welcome! Wow! You and I are seeing two completely different things here. Please listen to my narration as I explain what I am doing and operant conditioning is not what I am doing. I am not chasing her into learned helplessness (shutting down) or pressuring her to submit like you are saying. I am not using classical conditioning either. For one, we are in a big open space so she can leave anytime. Second, I'm not running her around. Third, I need to get a halter on her so I can handle her so I need to help her understand she needs to learn how to trust me and work with me. This horse does not want to be "caught." She is 9 years old, and has been in some really intense training and has hurt a lot of people. I was her last chance before she would be put down because she was so dangerous. I want to befriend her, as I am demonstrating and explaining. I also need clear leadership and boundaries so she understands what I want.
