The parents favored the son. He was the golden one and she was "just the girl". She tried to win their love her whole life and never understood that they did love her with their whole hearts. It was just the way things were then. The boys were the stars and the girls were just second class. It's taken us two generations to start to change it. Nobody's fault. It's just what happened.

Do you ever wonder if there are multiple "undiscovered" Karen Carpenters out there? As in, someone with a vocal talent that is on this level, but no one who can do anything about it has ever heard them? Or, maybe, the person just doesn't want to be famous, and is perfectly happy with whatever station in life they already have. We'll never know for sure.
@poiqweee Жыл бұрын
@@dugroz Certainly. There are plenty of people with better voices than many of today's popular singers, or at the very least on par with. Karen was an exception with her innate perfect pitch talent and relaxed non straining facial expressions. Most professional singers strain to reach high notes. Also, Karen rarely if ever used her whistle register (falsetto). She was born with a smooth, unique sounding voice. Blessed with exceptional vocal chords.

The irony was all she ever craved was to be loved . If only she really knew how much she was loved and is still loved .
@Claude-Vanlalhruaia3 жыл бұрын
That is not what the song is about. It's about her search for perfection, of what she desires for herself and of what she search, love, happiness, fulfillment, whatever she missed in her life. She has an eating disorder, anorexia, mental illness, it's the cause of her death where years of malnutrition and obsessive search for her perfect body image led her to desperate actions like medicinal abuse gave way in the form of heart failure.
@kingskidgirl23 жыл бұрын
I think Karen had a very good sense of how much her fans loved and appreciated her; sadly, I think probably the love, attention, and validation she craved was that of her mother, who seemed to have a difficult time showing it (from what I understand). 😔

I'm 60 years old, and have never heard a singer that can touch Karen Carpenter. Yes Streisand has an incredibly beautiful voice. Ann Wilson and Gladys Knight are/were incredible singers along with many others. But nobody rips at your heart and soul like Karen.

EdS Yes. I love Linda Ronstadt and think her range is amazing and she can sing anything. Other singers like Streisand, Aretha, Gladys, Mama Cass are powerful. However, there is something in Karen's voice that speaks to the heart of you. There is a loneliness and a sadness. It is perfectly pitched, of course but the loveliness seems to come from the feeling.
@ohger15 жыл бұрын
You have a good ear Ed. Streisand and Wilson's pipes are (were) astounding, but neither could **sing** like Karen. Like Nat Cole, you could listen to her for hours on end and enjoy every note until the last. Can't say that about many singers, including Streisand.

The hardest thing I've ever done Is keep believing There's someone in this crazy world for me The way that people come and go Through temporary lives My chance could come and I might never know I used to say, no promises Let's keep it simple But freedom only helps you say goodbye It took a while for me to learn That nothin' comes for free The price I've paid is high enough for me I know I need to be in love I know I've wasted too much time I know I ask perfection of a quite imperfect world And fool enough to think that's what I'll find So here I am with pockets full of good intentions But none of them will comfort me tonight I'm wide awake at four a.m. Without a friend in sight Hanging on a hope, but I'm alright I know I need to be in love I know I've wasted too much time I know I ask perfection of a quite imperfect world And fool enough to think that's what I'll find I know I need to be in love I know I've wasted too much time I know I ask perfection of a quite imperfect world And fool enough to think that's what I'll find

Her voice was magical but Richard was just as vital to their success. He picked and wrote the songs and his arrangements were exceptional. They complimented each other perfectly.
@eds39695 жыл бұрын
Correct. Richard wrote or co-wrote many of their songs including this one. Aside from the lyrics, this song has a sensational arrangement. Even the songs that he didn’t write, the arrangements were great, and nearly always better than what people had done before. He was a musical genius, and his sister’s singing was imo the best there ever was. That’s quite a combination.
@sarahholland13755 жыл бұрын
Don't agree. If you watch recent documentary her solo disco album which was great, was sabotaged by him & her mother who colluded with the record company in persuading her not to release it. They persuaded record company it was the wrong 'sexy' image.
@alisonrainbowz68615 жыл бұрын
At one audition, he picked too high a note for her to sing (in the film) I think Richard confirmed this in a documentary, then on the lower note, that lovely rich, smooth voice was discovered. I like her solo songs, but how she sang as The Carpenters was magical. They were born to be a team Richard said, that's what I think, but sometimes singing solo was okay as well
@eds39695 жыл бұрын
+Sarah, as I have stated, I believe Karen was the best. I did not think her solo album was very good. While it wasn’t bad, it didn’t bring out the best in Karen, like a Richard did. Regardless, she would have never abandoned her brother. She worshipped him, and recognized his genius. She did the solo album while he was rehabbing for prescription pill addiction.
@bruceelliott7645 жыл бұрын
He picked many of the songs, but he did NOT write most of the ones that were hits. Burt Bachrach, Hal David and others did.

I always felt he over arranged the music and would have preferred lighter arrangements
@daninnj85802 жыл бұрын
Yep, I always felt he went too far too. He should have just let her shine. It's very telling that his "comeback" used her voice tracks over new arrangements; his career sputtered and died when she did. Want proof? There's another video of this song on KZbin, done late in her career and without Richard at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWLVYnp8iKtrfq8 that is much better musically than this one. Also harder to watch as her disease is on full display; she looks terrible - far too thin, her face gaunt but that beautiful voice still amazing and the song even more soulful because of her inner pain telling us the words are even more real for her.
