Just a stunningly beautiful song ... all the more so because it's a seasonal piece. For years, I would just melt whenever this song was played. ❤️

A little story behind the music. Richard Carpenter's professor in chorale/music at Cal State Long Beach, Frank Pooler, wrote the lyrics in 1946 and the two had a meeting of the minds in the 60s when Richard was a student. He, Richard Carpenter wrote the music. Richard and Karen went to the studio to record it as a 45 single in 1970 and released it that Christmas. With Richard's impeccable arrangement and Karen's pure vocals it became a hit for Christmases to come. I was 8 when it first came out and has become my favorite non religious Christmas song

Not my fave Carpenters, but you're presenting it, and it beats most. I want to thank you for the year's worth of good, uplifting moments. You are dear and I'll be back with you again.

Thank you for your heartfelt reaction to the longing for a loved one that Karen expressed perfectly in her Christmas song, Ace. (I always called this "Karen's Christmas song.") Karen could do with one note of her voice what David Gilmour could do with one note of his guitar: make you feel it deep in your soul.

Hi Ace, This is one of my top favorite Christmas songs. Maybe #1, I mean it’s Karen. Yes, that Sax! That would be Bob Messenger, he was the sax player (and bass guitar and flute) for the Carpenters for their run. The harmonies were signature Carpenters. For the vast majority of their run all the harmonies were JUST Richard and Karen layered triple tracked. That was with 1970’s technology. This song dates to 1970 as their first holiday single, and in 1978 Karen re-recorded it for their Christmas Portrait album. If you remember Jim and Tori’s video where it was just them doing all the harmonies, that’s how the Carpenters did it. Jim couldn’t show all the layers, the video boxes would be too small so he gave a representative example, so it looked good. The audio had all the layers. I didn’t get you Tori’s Christmas songs in time. She is doing this type of traditional song. Including this exact song and three others, including her first original from last year’s Christmas. So there is hope.😊 Loved your reaction. ❤ Joe

And, I hate to tell you, but as time goes by, things are not as special and you look back, reminiscing. Bless you. Happy holidays.
