From Wikipedia: [saves me from typing]: The lyrics were written in 1946 by 20-year-old Frank Pooler, which, according to him, were about a love interest he had at the time. 20 years later in 1966, when he was choral director at California State University, Long Beach, two of his aspiring music students, Karen and Richard Carpenter, who were beginning to have success as a local band, asked him (their favorite professor) if he had any ideas for holiday songs. According to Pooler, they had become tired of the standard holiday songs they were singing. Pooler gave them the lyrics of the song he had written from years before, and told them he did not think much of the original melody. According to Pooler, Richard wrote a new tune for the lyrics-the tune currently used-in 15 minutes. Four years later, in 1970, the Carpenters first recorded and released it as a single..... TODAY: THIS is the only Carpenter song kids generally hear, once a year during the Christmas season, , and don't know they are hearing the great Karen Carpenter's voice, from the grave, exposing them to greatness in music, instead of the techno artificial noise they get pounded with day in and day out, except for reactors like you who have raised the bar back up by exposing many to this musical greatness. I would say the same for Nat King Cole's Christmas Song [Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire].

Her voice is the most beautiful!!! I was a teenager when the Carpenters became a thing!!! A wonderful time to be alive, hearing them on the radio, buying their albums, which I still have! Love that y'all love her too!!!

In 1970, when the Carpenters first became popular with 2 #1 hits in a row, I was 14. I instantly had a debilitating crush on Karen, and she was 20. I kept wishing I was 6 years years older lol. Part of it was because I was a musician in school and a singer. She was the perfect girlfriend for me 🤣. Although it may have not been her complete image, she and Richard became the image of the extremely talented kids next door. Imagine her as a fifth grade teacher...the kids would have followed her anywhere. They were the calm in the middle of a musical storm of the 1970's.

Yes, THIs really became the song for those deployed in Viet Nam back in the day, released in 1970. But only Karen could have made this so tender and loving.....

Shawn and Mel, thank you for continuing to react to the legendary Karen Carpenter. You might also like to review Karen's sumptuous renditions of Christmas classics "Christmas Song" (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire) and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". Karen makes these timeless songs even warmer and more memorable.

Oh I remember when this song came out in Christmas 1970, I was 8, and probably my most loved non-religious Christmas song. This is a 1978 re-recording of Karen's vocals for the Carpenters Chistmas album and TV special. There's a slight variation in Karen's vocal in the original 1970, which is the one that I grew up with. You might want tocheckout the 1970 original recording

Since YT started i' m glad that carpenter's music is now recognized rather than seen as the wonder bread of music that the 70's rock music magazines placed them

I have a whole LP album of the Carpenters Christmas music. Christmas just isn’t complete without Karen Carpenter, Bing Cosby, Perry Como, Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, and Elvis Presley filling the air with their vocal magic!

Good reaction. Herb Alpert heard Karen's voice on a demo in 1969 and signed her brother, Richard, and her to A&M records. Karen received 5 Grammys in the early 70s and sold over 80 million records by 1982. THE best female vocalist-ever, because she commands you to listen as she sings in perfect pitch TO you, not at you, with emotion and enunciation. No auto-tune or gimmicks. No professional voice or drum instruction. She was known by the studios as 'one take'. She rarely, if ever, did more than one take of any song. She was also the ONLY female harmony/background voice in all her songs. She was truly born with an incredible singing talent. Documentaries point out the accolades to her voice, such as, Paul McCartney said she had the most angelic voice after hearing her sing 'Ticket To Ride'. John Lennon ran into her at an LA restaurant and told her "you have a fabulous voice, luv". Supposedly Frank Sinatra stated that Karen was the only singer he'd pay to hear. You may have reacted to a couple of these, but I recommend songs such as, Yesterday Once More, Close To You, Solitaire, This Masquerade, Need To Be In Love, Hurting Each Other, Only Yesterday, I Can Dream Cant I, Crescent Noon, Ordinary Fool, Superstar, Rainy Days and Mondays, We've Only Just Begun', etc. KC never knew true love. Her few friends included Olivia Newton John and Dionne Warwick. 5'3 KC really lost weight, due to anorexia, in earnest beginning in 1975. She died in Feb 1983 at age 32 due to heart complications from anorexia.

Long before there was autotune, MTV and other "distractions" - there was the always in perfect tune and pitch voice of Karen Carpenter. Studies have been done on her voice that show she was her own autotune. Perfect pitch across the same songs over multiple years where she could recreate the exact sound repeatedly. I know today it's all about loud, nasty and foul language - but if you want look back when real singers could sing as far as I am concerned there's no one who has had then or since a better or more beautiful voice than Karen Carpenter. Sleep well, baby, the world still loves you as no other 40 years later.

NOW I MAY BE WRONG ---------THE YEARS CLOUD THE MEMORY--------BUT I BELIEVE THIS IS FROM 1980, & THE CARPENTERS FINAL TIME WE, THE AMERICAN PUBLIC, EVER SAW OR HEARD KAREN & RICHARD PERFORM. THE 1980 TV SPECIAL WAS SO VERY DIFFICULT TO WATCH ; BOTH I & MY WIFE AT THE TIME , WERE SHOCKED ---------REALLY SHOCKED--------WHEN WE SAW KAREN ! SHE WAS SO DANGEROUSLY THIN , & NO AMOUNT OF CLOTHING COULD HIDE IT. SHE DID NOT LOOK HEALTHY AT ALL. AT THAT TIME, SHE WAS JUST GOING THROUGH A VERY PAINFUL DIVORCE FROM HER SAD, TRAGIC, MARRIAGE , & BOTH HER ANOREXIA & HER BINGE-PURGE EATING , WERE IN FULL FORCE, & SLOWLY KILLING HER. WHILE HER ANOREXIA WAS PUBLICLY KNOWN, NO ONE -----------NO ONE !!-------HAD ANY IDEA KAREN WAS EATING, THEN USING IPECAC SYRUP TO FORCE VOMITING . AND NY 1983, IT WAS THAT OVER-USE, THAT DESTROYED HER HEART MUSCLE TO SUCH A DEGREE, WHEN SHE WAS FOUND BY PARAMEDICS, SHE LITERALLY HAD NO CARDIAC OUTPUT AT ALL. ---------STILL, KAREN NEVER LOST HER VOICE. THIS SONG 1ST CAME OUT AT CHRISTMAS OF '71. I STILL HAVE MY 45, OF THIS GORGEOUS MUSIC. ---------RIP, ANGEL . --------------------MJL, 78 Y/O
