I was 7 years old when this song came out. I did not speak English...born in Puerto Rico. Live now in the states...but this song triggers those memories...images of my younger years. I loved this song even though I did not understand what she was singing at the time. Now 56.... this song and a few others from the Carpenters...will NEVER get old. Timeless as you said. And you just go to another place if you close your eyes. It touches everyone in one way or another. Karen's voice if we could hear an Angel singing....this might be close.

Richard Carpenter on this song: “The oldies were enjoying a resurgence in popularity during the early ’70s, much to Karen’s and my delight. I thought it would be nice to write a song about this, and use the piece to bookend the oldies medley we were planning to record for the second side of our first album release for 1973, Now and Then. The resulting “Yesterday Once More” became our eighth domestic gold single, and one of our biggest hits worldwide.”

Karen's heavenly and angelic voice, always touched my soul as I was growing up. I bought their 2nd album back in 1971, and would play it all the time. Karen's voiced topped my desire to listen to my other albums, such as Chicago, BS&T, Santana, Grand Funk Railroad, the Doors, to name a few. To this day, 50 years later, Karen's voice still touches my soul. RIP, Karen.

In '73, on the heels of the huge succes of " American Graffiti", there was a huge nostalgia craze among my generation, for the music & groups of the 50''s & 60's. The Beach Boys had a huge resurgence, & as did singers & groups from the 50's at Rock & Roll Revival Concerts, all over the country. Richard , seeing this, wrote this classic, for the late summer of 1973. it's still one of my all-time favorites by Rich & Karen. ---------------------MJL< 75 y/o[ my last day at 75 ]

Feel good songs like this (though this one is a bit bittersweet) are sooo good to hear in this day and age, all the more so as they are very rare anymore, since there are very few being made currently. Carpenter songs illicit SUCH a clean, wholesome feeling, it just does everything you hope music will do.

Is there anyone that has perfect pitch like Karen Carpenter.
@scottborenstein82913 жыл бұрын
Perfect pitch is fairly rare I would venture to say. If you hear a singer with minimal vibrato like Karen they may have it. Only one can sing like Karen.

Answering Robert’s question… Alison Krause… the two best female voices EVER!
@jamesdrynan2 жыл бұрын
It's not perfect pitch, it's singing in tune. The reason they use auto-tune on today's singers in studios is because they are out of tune with the instruments.

The "backup singers" are Karen and Richard ! Karen's harmony part was 'dubbed' into her songs by Richard.. She was the ONLY female voice(s) in every one of her songs. Best female vocalist of all time. She was also a professional drummer. Certainly a loss when she died at 32 from complications of anorexia.

In high school Karen wanted to follow her brother into music so she took up the drum set. When they formed a band; Karen was their drummer only occasionally doing backup singing. So her brother never really heard her voice shine til they had a piece of music that really required a female to sing it. They approached Karen. She at first was very hesitant to sing solo but after some coaxing she did the piece. The band, including her brother, were so amazed they coaxed her again to become their lead singer of the band. Guilting Karen into believing she could be the reason for the success or failure of the band. So reluctantly she agreed and as they say the rest is history.

Over the last few years I have grown to have such a greater appreciation of The Carpenters and Karen in particular. I think a big part of that has come from watching channels like this one. I grew up in that era, and I know all their songs, and I also know the tragedy of Karen's life, and yet seeing people who have never heard the songs before being genuinely impressed and impacted by them really underscores how good the music was and what a talent she had. When I was a kid, there was kind of an attitude that these songs were sappy and could only be enjoyed by our parent's generation. This was obviously wrong, and I could not agree more with the statement about there being no evil or animosity or target market. Just nice soothing music.

I love Karen’s amazing alto voice. She is simply the second most important female vocalist who ever lived. If you are interested in listening to the voice of god brought to us by a human then get acquainted with the great Eva Cassidy. This soprano voice will take you through every human emotion possible and your life will be forever changed for the better. I love Karen. We all do but Eva is Gods voice and to hear it once changes every listener forever.
