Thanks for watching. It seems many brands haven’t really catered for portrait screens that well with their various adapters. Not that it helps you now, but in the next year I plan on going into more depth with portrait screens testing out a few adapters and seeing what’s best for difference uses. Right now I can really say what’s best because I would simply be guessing. I only tried the Megane Etech portrait screen and the adapters I had on the day really didn’t like the orientation, make the screen stretch out etc. I actually did a video on it that I’ve yet to put out. I’ll do that soon.

with vlc on iphone or firestick you can set a custom delay for the audio which will compensate. it should then play video with sound in sync just fine. set it once and then forget

You can connect it to a mobile hotspot when on the move, car WiFi if it has that, or a local WiFi network at home or whilst parked up to some shops etc.

It can be but most mirroring has a significant delay vs hdmi. Also if using iPhone Apple block many apps from mirroring/casting content from copyright protected apps like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ etc. Some HDMI adapters can bypass this.

As soon as you connect the hdmi cable that’s connected to the adapter (that’s connect to your CarPlay port) you’ll see the screen mirrored on the CarPlay display in a few seconds. If you have the pro adapter you need to select HDMI option on its main menu interface.

Make sure audio isn’t being sent else where like via BT or something. Also you could try a different device to make sure it’s not your phone or a setting.

The play2video operates over the CarPlay platform and doesn’t come with hdmi. So it isn’t a good comparison. Also if you only have Android auto that adapter wouldn’t work with it. There isn’t many that do hdmi and works on Android auto platform. Most recent is the CarlinKit UHD which can be converted to work over the AA platform.

Thanks Anthony for ur review - Its very crisp and clear as usual and u don't seem to miss much :) , I got their latest Car Tv Mate Pro max with wireless CP/AA and HDMI and it worked initially with huge pixel drops and glitchy visuals for the amazon fire stick 4k max , so i updated to the latest software provided by their own website using a PC - Now HDMI is not working at all , i have asked them for a solution , however curious to know if you have any idea how to downgrade or flash to the OG firmware this thing came with ? :(

Hi. Thanks for watching. I had to educate myself on what the Max version was. It’s the latest version of the TV mate adapter, so software maybe different to the Pro and non Pro. Both adapters have never been able to update, so I don’t think I’ll be able to advise on downgrading them. If you can’t select from a menu of firmwares somewhere it’s not possible unless you use files to force it somehow. I wouldn’t know where you’d get these from. Perhaps asking their support team might help. Good luck!

There’s only two main hardware approaches to these new HDMI to CP adapters. One from CarlinKit and one from Ottocast who also have many other rebrands of similar or same hardware. My personal fav is the CarlinKit amzn.to/4cI3JuL but I have read it has compatibility issues in many vehicles, so it’s a 50/50 if not works on yours. Best is its on Amazon so you have easy returns should it not work with your car system out of the box. If you’re intending to use it with a fire tv stick then their new FireDrive Link is more widely compatible kzbin.info/www/bejne/laa4d32Hhad8b5osi=kN9hVjT79doOcEn5 The Ottocast is ok with fire tv also and works more widely on CarPlay systems but it also has its own issues. Such as screen bordering in certain hdmi devices and needs a bit more work on its firmware to truly shine. Hope this helps

Quick one.. I wonder can u help.. Hyundai Tucson 2021 model, CarPlay in car, my new ottocast car mate 3 box won’t connect… nothing appears on screen.. firestick connected, blue light flashing.. all WiFi and Bluetooth connected fine.. any ideas from a pro like yourself ?

I’d say if the menu doesn’t show up without the fire tv stick installed on it then it could be a compatibility issue with your car system. The Ottocast is more widely accepting than the CarlinKit so this is a surprise to hear. But with that said there are models that it can still not work with. If you can test it on another CarPlay vehicle, that would be my next test, to make sure it isn’t a DOA adapter. If the menu of the adapter does show but goes blank on fire stick connection. Take the fire stick out and plug it into a tv and set the display resolution to something much lower like 800x600 or even lower than that and turn off UHD modes.

Tapping on the car app button in CarPlay will take you back to the adapter main menu instead of your car system. From here you can access hdmi option

I have a question. I have an aftermarket Android head unit in my 2010 Lexus RX 450h. I have a rear seat entertainment system so I would like to integrate it with a AI box that have HDMI out because the current head unit does not integrate with the rear seat entertainment system. So will an Android Ai box work with an aftermarket Android head unit with one of the 2 USB cables that most Android head units come with. So wired CarPlay into Android head unit USB cable to Android Ai box and mirror the HDMI out to rear seat entertainment system I hope I made it clear enough to understand what I’m trying to do.

Thst could work but the issues I see is an Android Os head unit might not play ball with the CarPlay connection of the ai box. Some are very picky with the platform they connect to. So this could be the first issue. Next is touch input. The hdmi screen won’t have touch so you’ll have to do that via a remote or a game pad connected over BT if the ai box supports that. But some won’t allow a BT pairing without using touch input to navigate the screen and pair the controller. Hope all thst makes sense.

The 2 headrest monitors will be connected threw HDMI but they will only be mirroring the output of the Ai Box. My main concern is will the Ai Box want to work with my Chinese 12.3 Android head unit with the preinstalled ZLINK app and with one of the 2 USB cords that these units come with.

I just purchased their pro universal unit which is $85 and comes with a free USBC to HDMI and car charger. It includes wireless android auto also. I will most likely be using it for Samsung dex. Hope there is an audio delay setting

Sadly not, it made it worse! Phone casting started to use the AirPlay method of streaming, which Apple likes to block on apps, so even apps like KZbin stopped working whilst HDMI was connected to my iPhone. :( I don't think the update was meant for the mainstream and is still under development.

It worked but there was some audio and input lag, which will be common across most hdmi devices that are used with it PLUS any delay your car system has. My golf has a fair bit. If it can be less than around +200ms delay it becomes less of an issue. Switch should work with this too. I don’t have one to test it with though.

Both Mate and Mate Pro look very similar. Take special care looking at the different casing between them. That or they shipped you the wrong product.

All these Ottocast devices, like this one, have a sound problem. I ordered two different kinds from Ottocast, and the sound keeps muting every few minutes. I wouldn't buy them if I were you. Plus, when the GPS talks through the speaker, it crackles and pops.

It’s not meant to come with a firestick. You have to supply your own. You can connect any hdmi device to it as long as it’s powered somehow

I hooked this up, and as soon as I plug it in, I lose my phones bluetooth. Example: I don't get phone calls or text notifications. Once I unplug it, the Bluetooth comes back. I missed an important phone call because of that. Anyone else notice that or is there a way to fix? I have not plugged my phone into it just a firestick which works great. I have an android phone.

This is an odd one. Would your phone be connecting to the car stereo BT at all? Make sure the car BT profile has been removed to prevent that. AAuto pairs with the car BT stereo for audio playback so it may have done this in the past. Does the phone have some sort of car mode that silences calls and messages on a BT connection. Check this on the phone. Other than this I don’t really know of a solution. Do other phones get knocked out too or is it just yours.

So I contacted ottocast, and they tell me it should work, but I think this particular model (car tv mate) is not android auto capable. I see carplay popup but not A.A. Also, I noticed the Bluetooth does not show up in available devices on my phone. I'm guessing I need the car tv mate pro. Or another brand that is A.A. compatible.

The non-pro model doesn't have wireless carplay support, the pro does. Neither will work with Android Auto connections.
