You can see how anglers starting out could get confused these days. You watch 10 different videos about a specific subject and get 10 different ways of doing that thing. Some professional anglers swear by the lightest lead they can get away with, others like Ian say the opposite. It’s important to understand that these are opinions (I agree that both arguments have their own merits). Advice for any young/new anglers out there - try different things and find the methods that work best for you. Part of the fun/learning is trial and error, as long as fish safety is paramount. Be your own angler! Don’t follow the ‘trends’ :)

that's the problem with all of life, every "expert" contradicts all the others and the beginner is still unsure wtf to do. I am copying literally everything top rod on my water is doing, right down to the glug, the length of the hooklink, every last detail, poaching his swims where he catches when he's not there, and can't catch a fkn thing. This is THE MATRIX. The controller of your life won't allow you to simply copy and paste, you must do something different. So yeh this pretty much renders 90% of all youtube carp channels....USELESS. If the 12oz lead struggles to hold bottom, especially on rivers ive found that 6ft of 18mm chain helps. Casting can be difficult so I recommend a bait boat however, due to the extra weight my go-to is glue a few popups to the rear of the boat for balance...👍👍👍

Been trying the chods now for 6 hour day sessions for last week without doubt switching back to lead clip or helicopter as confidence has been diminishing been on fish and no takes was determined to pick 1 off but to no prevail so I now from experience second chilly’s opinions in confidence in rigs you can’t beat that feeling

Hi Ian. Great video's and like your views. I hove only ever used free running leads for most of my fishing and never had any issues with them. Like the fact it's very safe. Can cast distance as well with this method.

That helicopter rig is dangerous how is the hooklink supposed to come off if you get cut off off the bead won't slide up because you got a big bit of Lead behind it

If the bead won't slide up the line you aint set it up right. Before YOU use one again make sure YOU test the bead comes off. The heli is probaby the safest

Lead Weights why use them? So the question is Lead Weights why use them? The answer is simple, we use lead weights as it’s inexpensive, easy molded and dense. The Lead come in many shapes and weights depending on what type of fishing we wish to do from small lakes and fishing margins, casting out far, holding firm ground in flowing waters or feeling the types of ground where we physically can’t see! Lead has been used for hundreds of years and as any clued up person knows lead is poisonous and advised not to make lead weights as a home business due to lead poisoning! Just think for a second lead pipes in the UK where banned more than 25 years ago due to lead dissolving into the drinking water and can be harmful in the body. In 1987 some size lead shot was banned due to waterfowl ingesting lost shot while feeding, saying that some question most would have been from shotguns but it still remains illegal in the UK to use lead weights of less than 1oz (28.35grams) with fines up to £5000 and the confiscation of your fishing tackle!! Lead weights are not dangerous for humans to handle unless of course you ate them. Even then it would take many lead weights to cause serious harm. However lead weights can be damaging to the environment and there where talks of banning leads in 2021 in the UK, this is because in the event of your line snapping or as some fishing companies are trying to promote the ‘drop the lead to protect and catch a fish’ attitude, these are then left at the bottom of the water. This is harmful to the water as the lead will over time break down adding toxicity to the water and also it’s a well-known fact that some birds drive down picking up stones (lead by mistake) swallow to help break down food in there stomach which in turn their acid will break down the lead poisoning the bird. There have been studies found showing the increase over time in the levels of lead in the blood of both birds and fish in areas of highly fished waters. We must remember that angling is a privilege and also a way of wellbeing that we are Ambassadors of the environment. We say we care for the fish’s wellbeing, using Carp care kits, cradles etc. to protect these beautiful animals yet we’re doing something morally wrong in making the waters we fish toxic over time! My beef is mainly the recent years companies who shall not be named are banging on about dropping leads for the well fair of the fish, but wait………… We drop a lead because our rigs have a lead on yet when we use feeders of different sorts we never drop them i.e. method feeders or caged feeders, you’ve got to have a word with yourself in the mirror and ask yourself why? Because a few companies say so, don’t be like a sheep and follow investigate look on line and don’t just say “ok because they do it I will” Dropping your lead will potentially allow your line to go slack and the hook could come out of the fish and rip its mouth! Really is that what you want a fish that is hurt and damaged? No of course not we fish to see these amazing creatures at their best and to test ourselves make friends (well some do). So why use toxic products when there are companies that provide an alternative product that does the same thing if not better and protecting the environment we all love. There are a few companies now that make toxic free weights Pallatrax with the Stonze , Zinkers , Dinsmores, AGM worm weights, MagnaDense, Bismuth-Tin Alloy there must be more

@@grahamlarkin1290 That's a very quick response to a much larger picture! Why do we no longer have lead piping, lead in pencils because its toxic and therefore dangerous to humans. We look after ourselves but anglers say they care for fish but what's right in front of their nose is dismissed. One important part of fishing is a weight, plenty of alternatives to use. Do your own research and come back to me if you still feel the same?
