#Check Description For Links. I show how I replace the heat exchanger in a gas rooftop unit that has a cracked heat exchanger and where to look for these silent killers and fire hazards. The rebuild includes the heat exchanger, draft motor, ignitor, flame sensor and burners for a complete restoration of an old heating and cooling rooftop unit.

Good job on that repair. Those Carrier heat exchangers are good for 6 or 7 years. I have a location that they use them for dehumidifying. They started failing after 5 years. Sweet hook there. I use an old cradle mount. Bent one end open the other in a hook fashion. Works quite well. Everyone asks where I got it and I point to an exhaust fan lol. Stay safe.

I've heard it's the 90+ AFUE ones which tend to go out in short order in residential units. They just can't seem to make good ones. My Payne 70K furnace from 1996 is still going with its original heat exchanger. Only issue I've had is that it seems to be finicky about an even slightly dirty flame probe; I'm always having to clean it one or twice a season, even after having the burners cleaned and the gas pressure adjusted.

I believe the reason they went to pressure switches is for greater safety; they want to make sure there is actually sufficient airflow in the heat exchanger before igniting the burners, and from a safety standpoint it's better to check actual airflow than to check if the motor itself is running. I think some of them, like the older Evcon furnaces, actually use a centrifugal switch rather than a Hall-effect sensor.
@HVACRSurvival
@HVACRSurvival 4 жыл бұрын
I would agree but they are also a little less reliable vs the hall effect or centrifugal switch in commercial applications.

@HVACRSurvival

I haven't ran many combustion tests on commercial RTUs,. But from what I have found from testing in different locations of the flue pipe, it hasn't made large changes in my readings as long as your centered in the exhaust path and are within 12" from the draft motor. But remember if you're checking a natural draft heater, to test before the draft hood where it adds room air to aid in the natural drafting process.

@@HVACRSurvival thanks for the reply and info. Hey man, awesome video I have a couple of the carrier 48 series. How long would you say it takes to replacement the heat exchanger in these bad boys? My HVAC guy is trying to charge me 8 hours labor
@HVACRSurvival
@HVACRSurvival 4 жыл бұрын
On site labor can be as little as 2.5 to 3.5 hours, then add the travel time to the job and back to the shop, then add for picking it up and for ordering it and disposing of the old parts. But you also need to add time incase you run into problems such as getting into position and testing the unit. Maybe the RTU needs a full service, like washing out the coils and the blower wheel. All of those things can add up. I would feel safe at 6hrs total but then what do you do for the remaining 2 hours to fill the day? In two hours you can't get a lot done without going into overtime so they might have just rounded it up to 8 hours to make it easy to quote. If this company does a great job and is reliable, you have to decide if the cheaper company will stand behind the repair. When I'm doubt, ask the contractor what all is included with the time billed for. Some contactors price the job higher if they're busy in hopes of not getting the job. Talking it out is the best way to know.

Why did you change the burners? More to the point, what would you look for to indicate they should be replaced?
@HVACRSurvival
@HVACRSurvival 5 жыл бұрын
I look for rusty burners, crossovers, anything that could cause a call back. The burners can wear out and burn dirty causing incomplete combustion, etc and since the customer did not replace the whole system like I recommended, I wanted everything to be new in the heat section for worry free operation to the best of my doing. Anything above the minimum repairs needed for safety was quoted as a option so the customer could make the decision and take responsibility for any future problems if they choose not to make the recommended repair. This covers myself against any liability.

I have two Carrier rooftop units that are about 16 years old, a 5 ton and a 7.5 ton. I have one heat exchanger that needs to be replaced. Service company is saying it might be smarter to buy a whole new unit than throwing good money at this problem. There isn't much to these units. Why buy a whole new unit at this age?
@HVACRSurvival
@HVACRSurvival 2 ай бұрын
At 16 years old it would depend on what refrigerant it’s using, if it’s using ourR-22, the refrigerants very expensive however it can be converted to an alternative refrigerant like R-407C but will require a oil change, to do it right you need to pull the compressor out and dump the oil and replace it with POE oil. You also have to judge based off of the condition of your evaporator and condenser coil. So it’s not cut and dry and hard to tell without seeing it myself, but they may be right.
@jamesrothwell1738
@jamesrothwell1738 Ай бұрын
Because they don’t want to deal with the “but it was just working last year and I just spend $12,000 for you to fix x, y, and z!” When the compressor dies at the start of the next cooling season. So they’d rather replace the unit for maybe $18-27.5k and give you another 15 years of heat and AC with minimal complaints and service calls. That way everybody is happy. They get to make some money that day. And you get a good working unit that won’t need ppl coming out for expensive service calls 4x a year.

I've never done anything other then ten tons,maybe 7.5.It the exact same design. CARRIER needs to improve the extension for the drft that attaches 2 the outside door,I haven't seen that new ignitor with the metal backing,or psi controls, the ones I worked use and end sitch off drft.It usually is a red ,white,and blk wire with a plug that attaches to the integrated furnace control board.
@HVACRSurvival
@HVACRSurvival 4 жыл бұрын
I agree, they are lacking behind in design but they can't make them condensing furnaces when they are used in northern climates like I'm located. So the efficiently won't change much and the over all design is likely cheap to manufacture, so that might be the trade off between cheap and better. 🤷‍♂️ Hard to say.

I NEED EVERYTHING IN THE HEAT EXCHANGER, EVERYTHING THAT HAS TO DO WITH THE HEAT EXCHANGER I NEED.EVERYTHING,EVERYTHING,IF A GASKET IS SEPERATE I NEED IT,IF A PLATE IS SEPERATE INEED IT,EVERYTHING!That how it's ordering them,and its every manufacturer, lennox,york,carrier it seems like all of them will have a plate,a bag of gaskets,something that's not part of the heat exchanger, BUT IS. It can be really annoying, If im doing a hx,everything that's part of it gets replaced, alot of times drft mtr if the cage is smoked.I always replace all the screws with fresh new screws,ill re use that one weird long screw.Those roll outs are infamous for going bad,I usually replace them too.Usually I pull the jumper that someone put between w1 and w2 so it runs high heat all the time.There infamousforrusted out seams,the carrier rtu that I worked on ran on 407c 2,ran hotter then R22.300 lb head on a 95 degree day.I had those hx to a science ,a helper and i could knock them out dam quick.I never disliked that design, carrier used it for like 20 yrs,going back to the weathermakers,and they were simple to work on.Even there clo boards that monitored amp draw comingfrom the compressor was self explanatory. I hear you. There really isn't a glove that fits my hands very well. I've got some nice Klein gloves but they really aren't that warm. And most importantly I can't manipulate screws with them on.

06:21 / The Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, etc . Don't disparage the great symbol of our nation by calling it, " the old ragged flag " .

I'm absolutely not, It makes me mad they don't respect it enough to maintain it, I feel once it gets ripped or looks worn, it should be swapped out and sent to the VFW for disposal. But the saying comes from a old hymn called "The old ragged cross". If that saying was good enough for Jesus, it should be good enough for our flag. No disrespect was meant.

@@HVACRSurvival Thank you. I agree. Maybe you could send them a letter. Many organizations can retire their old flag and provide them with a replacement : )

I have a hard time finding gloves that actually fit my hand properly, I think my thumb is always shorter than it should be and has about a quarter to half an inch of extra at the end🤣
